FROM THE BOARDROOM

Firstly, I extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters from Westbury
United to The Ridings this afternoon. I hope that you had a good journey and that you all
enjoy our Sodbury hospitality before, during and after the match today.
It seems remarkable that we reach early September and find ourselves already playing our
eighth competitive fixture of the season, having notched up 650+ miles of travel so far - in no
small part due to distant fixtures in the FA Cup (Dunstable) and FA Vase (Wokingham &
Emmbrook).
One good thing that comes from these travels is that it allows you to play against sides you
would not normally encounter, so a fresh challenge with no pre-conceived ideas about what
you will face on the day. You also get to see how the clubs operate and perhaps bring back
some ideas for your own club, so they are generally a worthwhile experience.
The hospitality shown to The Sods by both Dunstable and Wokingham & Emmbrook was first
class and we have already thanked them for it, let’s hope this high standard is maintained
throughout the season.
Since our last Boardroom notes we have played four further matches, Bridgwater Town and
Bradford Town at home followed by away trips to Buckland Athletic and Wokingham &
Emmbrook in the FA Vase.
The Bridgwater game started badly with a red card in the first minute but the team fought on
nonetheless, going in at half time 2-1 down. However a slow start to the second half saw The
Sods concede 3 goals in as many minutes to effectively settle the outcome, with some poor
defending and tired legs ultimately leading to an 8-1 defeat which was a harsh outcome for
the effort that the players put in.

The Bradford game was a much closer affair although we did get off to a poor start, conceding
in the 6th minute. The rest of the game saw chances at both ends but a second goal for a
strong Bradford side on 80 minutes secured the points for the visitors - but The Sods could
take heart from a much improved performance.
24th August saw The Sods make the long trip down to Buckland on Bank Holiday weekend, the
M5 was at its worst! A later than planned arrival saw a delayed kick off and a fairly even first
half saw The Sods 1-0 down at Half Time. A second goal mid-way through the second half saw
The Sods make some tactical changes to try and get back into the game but they were unable
to take their chances and 2 late goals saw Buckland win 4-0.
Last Sunday (the local cricket team had the ground booked for Saturday!) saw The Sods travel
to Wokingham for the FA Vase fixture. A competitive game saw chances at both ends before
a defensive mix up gifted the opener to Wokingham, The Sods going in at Half Time 1-0 down.
The second half saw greater drama with The Sods first equalising and then going down to 10
men after a second yellow card.
With the score at 1-1 the game moved into extra time which saw The Sods lose another player
to injury (the 4th of the day), leading to our Reserve keeper kitting up as an emergency striker
for the last 20 minutes. Sadly with 5 minutes of extra time left Wokingham were able to make
use of their extra man and score the winner, just as penalties seemed likely.
This week also sees our remaining teams join the First team and the Ladies team in starting
their seasons – the Reserves away at Longwell Green, the A team away at Seymour United
and the Under 18’s away at Slimbridge in mid-week – good luck to all teams.
You will also hopefully notice a difference around the club soon following the appointment of
our new Commercial Manager, Mark Lloyd. Mark has done some great work in attracting new
sponsors to the club and we hope to have all of the new banners on display very soon.

As I conclude this narrative I would like to put on record my thanks to the small number of
people who deserve the thanks and recognition of all involved at the club. These people all
volunteer a significant amount of their free time to do the jobs necessary to keep the club
going – the jobs that they do are too numerous to mention.

They do their work quietly and look for no recognition, heroes to a person!
Here’s to a good performance and positive results all round – Up The Sods!

Gary Walters - Treasurer, CSTFC.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

Westbury United Football Club - A Brief History

The club started in 1920 when two local sides amalgamated. Westbury Old Comrades FC
had just won promotion to the First Division of the Wiltshire County League and to
strengthen the side they joined forces with a local junior side, Westbury Great Western
Railway XI, and together they became Westbury United Football Club.
In its first season, the Club finished third from bottom of the County league and in the
1920's they struggled, but in the 1930's they won everything possible in Wiltshire
football. In 1936 the Club reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. They were led by
a magnificent player called Billy Pearce, who captained the County throughout the
decade. Also included in the side at the time was a prolific goal scorer called Bill Butler,
who scored more than eighty senior goals in one season (including thirty in a month!).
The Club purchased and moved to its present ground in Meadow Lane in 1934, the cost of
the four-acre site being £475. The very first game played on what was then the Jubilee
Playing Field was against Bristol City and a crowd of around 4000 attended.
The Club has produced many players who have gone on to make the grade at professional
football, two of them being centre forwards for Bristol City. The first was Reg Smith who
played for City in the 1930s and was then transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers for
what was described in the Press as a 'considerable fee'. The other was John Atyeo, who
for his signature City played a presentation game against Westbury and made a donation
of £100. It must have been the bargain of the century as John played over 600 games for
City and scored 359 goals. He also played six times for England in which he netted five
goals. He died suddenly in June 1993, aged 61, and now has a grandstand named after
him at City's Ashton Gate ground as well as a street in his home village of Dilton Marsh
(just a few miles from Meadow Lane).
The Club has strong family traditions. Wilf Alford left Westbury before the last War to
play for then First Division Portsmouth. His son, Phil, managed the Reserve Team for
many years as well as stints helping at First Team level, while his grandsons have also
played for the Club.
Westbury joined the Western League in 1984 and initially struggled. In 1988 floodlights
were erected and Southampton were the visitors for the official switch on. Season 1988-
89 saw the Club win its first honour in the League, winning the Sportsmanship Trophy. In
1991, under the management of Ian Harris, they won the First Division Title to gain
promotion to the Premier Division. The highest League placing to date came in the 1994-
95 season when they finished fifth.
The Club has had its share of dedicated officials who have given a lifetime of service.
Former Club President, Ernie Barber, who passed away in December 2012, used to carry
the team kit as a seven-year-old (1933) and after the war he started playing. When he
finished playing he became Secretary and held the post until the end of the 1996-97
season when he decided to retire.
In recent years the Club has, with the help of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, been
able to replace the drainage system on the pitch as well as erect fencing around the
ground and a wall around the pitch.
Following several seasons in the 2000s where the aim of promotion to the Toolstation
Premier League wasn’t achieved, long standing manager Paul Brickley stood down and
there was 6 seasons of struggle from 2010/11 till 2015/16 under various managers with
the team finishing in the bottom 3 every time!
There have been major changes behind the scenes with the aim of driving the Club
forward. Although the team finished bottom of the league in 2014-2015 we were
reprieved from relegation and made a minor improvement in 2015-2016. With the drive
from those who joined the Club from the Westbury Youth set up there is a closer
relationship between adult and youth football resulting in many teenagers stepping up to
Western League football.

The 2015/16 season had a similar theme, Westbury were facing down the barrel of
another relegation battle and another manager was relieved of his position. This change
brought in the current father/son management team Neil and Joe Kirkpatrick, a strong
finish to the season meant Westbury finished with a satisfactory 58 points and a 12th
position finish.
A lot of hard work was put in off the pitch in preparation for the 2017/18 season. The
wall surrounding the pitch was painted white, a new pay hut was erected, the clubhouse
and changing rooms were refurbished. Also the team structure of the club had major
changes, a ‘new’ reserve team was entered into the Wiltshire Senior League and the team
competing in the Trowbridge and District League was renamed Westbury United
Development team, complimented by a new U18’s team at Westbury Youth there is finally
a clear pathway for players to develop.
The Kirkpatrick's had attracted a strong group of players and Westbury started the
season amongst the favourites to be promoted. They started the season well, staying
unbeaten for the first 13 league games, winning 8 and drawing 5. Chairman Matt Bright
stepped down in early October to spend more time with his family, and Secretary Greg
Coulson was elected to become Chairman at a Special General Meeting in early November.
The club won the First Division and secured promotion to the Premier Division.[1] They
managed to score more points (95, previous best 91), score more goals (97, previous best
95) and concede the least goals (29, previous best 39) in the clubs history.
2018/19 was Westbury’s first season back in the Toolstation Western Premier League
since relegation in 2002, they finished fifth with another record points haul for the club.
They are hoping to be able to build on their impressive return to the Premier Division in
the upcoming season.

Westbury United proved to be too strong for Chipping Sodbury Town on Saturday as they came
from behind to record an emphatic win at The Ridings.
Sodbury took the lead after 13mins through Harvey Baker after a brilliant start.
The game turned in the 34th minute as the hosts’ goalkeeper Ross Grimshaw was sent off and they
were reduced to 10 men.
The second half was just 10 minutes old before Jamie Jordan levelled things up.
The game remained level until the final 12 minutes, then Dan Kovacs, Marcus Price and Callum
Demkiv netted to secure all 3 points for unbeaten Westbury.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN WOMENS TEAM HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury Women's Football in Chipping Sodbury is not a new thing. The Town had
a Ladies XI back in the 1940's but little is known about them.
Chipping Sodbury Ladies football was reborn on 4th September 2016 when the newly formed

team joined the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League Division 2.
Their 1st season saw the title decided in March 2017, when 'The Sods' and Frampton Rangers
Ladies met twice. The first encounter on 5th March at the Frampton Ground ended with 'The Sods
walking away with all 3 points after Rosanna Blacker scored two goals and Frampton did not reply.
If the Ladies could win or Draw against Frampton the following week back at the Ridings, the

Championship was virtually in the bag. The following Sunday the Ladies went down 0 - 5 to
Frampton and even though 'The Sods' won their last game, they lost the Championship on Goal
Difference. In the Cup, they reached the Semi-finals and only just lost by a single goal to the

eventual cup winners Almondsbury UWE. League Runners-up and a semi-final cup finish in their
1st season was a Great Start for the Club.
2017/18 Season saw the Ladies appear in Division 1 after their promotion. The Opposition was
better and the games were tougher but they had another great season and finished 4th in the
league. Their cup run was halted by their old foes Frampton Rangers in the quarter finals by 2
goals to 3. Our goals coming from S.Haynes and H.Tuckwell.

A Higher league finish and a better cup run than the season before was the aim in season 2018/19
and the Ladies did not disappoint. A first time appearance in the Women's F.A.Cup with a 3rd

place finish in the league and a fantastic cup run, saw the Sodbury Ladies have their most

successful season yet. The Final of the cup in April did not go the way the Ladies wanted and were
runners-up to the League and so Double winners Bristol Ladies Union.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and entered the
Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves then entered The
Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves stayed in the Bristol & District
League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the Reserves began in the 1981/82 season
under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before
joining The Bristol & District League in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the
Reserves became Champions of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the
Championship of Division 3 was attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side
reach the final but come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing
runners-up and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the
Bristol & District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the Reserves
history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was another success
for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination Division 1 they finished
runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination. The first season in The Premier
Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period,
to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the
Premier Combination, the highest league standing in the Reserves History.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN ‘A’

A new chapter unfolds at the beginning of the side’s 16th Season. A first ever season in the
Bristol and District league Division 1. The 4th September 2004 in Division 6, away at Eden
Grove Reserves, was where it all began. Under Chris Gear and Rich Bisp the fledgling team
took their first steps. A fine goalkeeper James Crew and a Centre forward by the name of
Luke Durham, to name just two of the starting 11. Justin Cattle and the Boss’s son Jim Bisp
on the bench, another 2 names well known at The Ridings.

Well it wasn’t easy and a Rob Sarkozi goal was the only thing to show for all their efforts.
7 – 1 it could only get better. Rich Bisp, you know, the fine young blonde chap who’s our
groundsman now, took to the field for the second game. A player described by JC the first
team gaffer as having “The best left foot in local football”. At home that day, the boys
(and Rich) beat the BAWA ACES Reserves by 5 goals to nil. Mr.Sweet left foot and
Mr.Sarkozi scored a goal each and Mr.Durham helped himself to a Hat-trick. The following
week away, they put 7 past Fishponds Athletic ‘A’ and 2 months later when visiting
Coalpit Heath Reserves they put 7 past them as well. But the highlight of the season was
on 5th March at home to Little Thatch. An 11 – 0 victory was order of the day. Our Blonde
groundsman was again on the score sheet and was aided by Hat-tricks from Luke Durham
again and one from the 1st team Gaffer Jeff Clark.

As runners-up in the league the team were promoted in their first season.

Everyone at the club wants to wish Ricky and the team a fantastic season in Division 1.
