From the Boardroom

Firstly members of the CSTFC management committee would like to extend a warm welcome to
all the players, officials and supporters from Wellington to The Ridings this afternoon for this
Western League Premier Division fixture.

We hope that everyone here today enjoyed the New Year celebrations and the club wishes you
all good health and prosperity in 2020.

We go into today’s game in the back of a a win and a defeat in our last two games, The victory
was a very sweet one avenging the defeat earlier in the season, Two goals from Jack Moore saw
us home in the win over Roman Glass St George. Last Saturday we were at Shepton Mallett
where a very even first half saw us turn around 0 – 0 at half time. What happened in the second
half was unbelievable and we managed to concede six goals. I think it’s safe to say that every
shot they had went in and even their committee members felt that the result was not a reflection
of the game.

The other teams in the relegation zone all lost last weekend but we dropped a place on goal
difference. We now need to battle to escape from this predicament and the starting point must
be not to concede goals. We have the commitment to avoid relegation and the pace up front to
unlock defences. Its going to be difficult but we now need points in the bag as we can’t rely on
other teams to lose their games.

I am hoping that the new year will see a change of fortune for us, and as you will see we have a
run of home games in January which means that we will probably have a full squad available. We
are entertaining some of the better teams in the league however it would be a good time to show
that we are ready to put up a real fight for survival. The spirit is there now we need to convert it
to results.

Todays’ game therefore is a real six pointer and although we have still to visit Wellington three
points for us are a must.

We will also have a additional fixture before the end of the month when we will be entertaining
Oldland Abbotonians in the 3rd Round of the GFA Challenge trophy. The fixture will be arranged
and announced at the game on Saturday.

Upcoming fixtures are:

Sat 11th Jan – Wellington (H)
Sat 18th Jan – Exmouth Town (H)
Sat 25th Jan – Plymouth Parkway (H)
Tues 28th Jan – Cadbury Heath (H)

Come on you Sods - Geoff Endicott – Toolstation Fixture Secretary.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

Shepton Mallet 6 Chipping Sodbury Town 0

4th January 2020 – Toolstation Western League Premier Division

Shepton started the new year off in fine style with their biggest win of the season,
although you'd have got long odds on the final scoreline at half time when it was nil nil
against visitors Chipping Sodbury.
Possession in the first half was fairly even but Sodbury lacked the finishing touch even
before the break, so wasting some at times decent build up play, with Jack Moore hitting
their best chance well wide after half an hour. Their cause was not helped by the fact that
Shepton's defence was sound throughout, with Andy Martin in particular but also Aaron
Cockerill, Kieran Bailey and skipper Liam Watson all having solid games. But Shepton
could not find a finish to several promising moves, as Tyrone Tucker-Dixon hit an early
effort straight at Sods keeper Archie Watts, Conrad Peck had a header saved on the line
and 20 minutes in Aaron Seviour brought a decent stop from Watts after Seviour
combined well with Finn Haines. Late in the half a Tucker-Dixon cross found Haines whose
shot was cleared off the line, and a superb ball from Craig Loxton to Tucker -Dixon saw the
latter fire inches wide of a post, the half ending with Haines blasting a shot over the bar
when well placed.
Watson went off ill at half time and was replaced by Jack Fillingham, returning from
injury, and five minutes into the half Fillingham was instrumental in setting up the first
goal. Martin played a clever pass on the half turn down the middle and Fillingham's flicked
header was met by Morgan who sidefooted the opener past Watts. On 55 minutes the
lead was doubled after Bailey made a fine challenge near half way and knocked the ball
forward for Tucker-Dixon to pass to Fillingham, who moved 5 yards to his left before
crashing a superb angled shot from 25 yards in off the far post. Fillingham and Seviour
then combined to set up the next chance for Morgan, whose half volley went wide, but
Morgan had better luck with his second and Shepton's third just after the hour mark after
more great work from Fillingham down Shepton's left side, before Fillingham picked out
Morgan in the middle, who beat Watts from 10 yards. With 20 minutes left, Moore
headed just about Sods only chance of the second half too high, before normal service
was resumed at the other end a minute later, as Morgan turned provider with a pin point
pass to the far post that saw substitute Daryl Charman on hand to knock in a fourth for
the hosts. Nathan Legge should have made it five after another defence splitting move
saw him race clear, only to drag a great chance wide of a post. Fillingham did make it five
from the penalty spot with 5 minutes to go, after Tucker-Dixon was clattered inside the
area and an alert linesman corrected the referee who had waved play on. Remarkably, the
last nine games in which Fillingham has scored, he has always added a second goal. And
the side's top scorer was involved right to the end as he worked a glorious one-two with
Tucker-Dixon, for the latter to drill a shot past Watts into the far corner and round off a
fine start to the year.

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB

Affiliated to the Somerset FA
Members of:

Toolstation Western League
Macron Devon & Exeter League; Invest Southwest Taunton Saturday League
Somerset County Women’s League; Western Counties Floodlight Youth League

Taunton Youth League & Mini League; Somerset Girls Football League

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues
based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and
succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one
of the League’s longest continuously serving members.

The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier
Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division
Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team
finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to
Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this
in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level.

The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two
seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again
finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year.

Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division
Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and have been
promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season.

The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but,
with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the
playing and non-playing aspects of the club.

This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and
girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of
the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams
won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year.

During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its
Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch
Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football
pitches in the town to one site.

Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full
programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are
available for hire.

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two
seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League in
1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions of
Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but come
runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up and
getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol &
District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing be-
tween the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the
Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was
another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination
Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination.
The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning
5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the
team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the highest league
standing in the Reserves History.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN ‘A’ 2
LAWRENCE ROVERS 2

After an extended break due to weather and the festive break, our 6th league fixture of
the season brought us a tough task against Lawrence Rovers. Over the past few seasons
this fixture has been entertaining with results going either way.
What we wanted from the team was a quick start and to put the opposition under
pressure. What we got was completely the opposite and we were 2-0 down halfway
through the half.
Suddenly we kicked into gear and put immense pressure on the opposition, moving the
ball quickly around the pitch and getting good service from the wings. Pressure told and
we were awarded a penalty, which was put away by Dalton Hoskins. Soon after, Dalton
doubled his tally and we finished the first half drawing 2-2.
We took the game to them in the second half and had chance after chance, but couldn't
convert any of them into goals. Whilst Lawrence Rovers had their chances we were, by far
the better side and the game finished 2-2. The debate is still ongoing as to whether it was
a point gained or 2 points lost, but that still leaves us 4th in the league having won 4, drew
1 and lost 1.
A good position for us to be in with games in hand.
