Lessons From the Parsha…
By: HaRav Yosef Danziger
The תורהtells us several times about the איסורto do “ – מלאכהwork” on שבת קודש. Interestingly, however, the תורהnever delineates what
exactly it is that constitutes “work.” That information is left to תורה שבעל פה, where חז"לlearn from the סמיכותin this week’s פרשה, that the 39
מלאכותthat were done as a part of building the משכן, are the מלאכותthat are אסורto do on שבת.
This connection clearly hints to something deeper. What is the connection between the מלאכת המשכןand the ?מלאכת שבת
The world exists as a place for גילוי כבודו יתברך. The earth and the seas, the forests and deserts, cities and villages – indeed, the entire vast
expanse by the cosmos, have one purpose only – to broadcast כבוד שמיםand allow us to relate to Him.
However, there are divisions in levels of קדושה. In some places the רוחניותis near tangible, in others we must work hard to understand how
this is an expression of כבודו יתברך.
The משכןis the one place on earth where reality reigns supreme. – ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכםin the משכןthere is nothing but שריית השכינה. It
is not only the most holy, but also the most real place in the physical universe. It represents the epitome, the prototype, of what physicality
really is: a nothing other than a base for השראת השכינה.
As it is in the dimensions of space, so it is in the dimension of time. Six days a week we live our lives in the realm of the physical: working,
shopping, traveling, as the need requires. Of course, all this hustle bustle, all this earthly activity, is not reality. It is our way of going through
the motions of necessary השתדלות. All of it – from the most sublime to the most mundane – are really opportunities to bring out כבוד שמים
and be ' עובד הthrough all the diverse means that he makes available.
And then there is שבת. שבת קודשis the day when we drop the façade. It is the time where we recognize that the purpose of all our actions is
really just קדושהand רוחניות. In other words, שבתis the day of the week in which we actually live in reality. A small weekly taste of the world
of reality: מעין עולם הבא יום שבת מנוחה.
What the משכןis in the world of space, שבתis in the world of time. The six days of work week is but a time of preparation for that day that is
really the purpose of it all. How appropriate, then, that the very work that we completed upon the completion of the משכן, is the work that is
no longer necessary upon the realizing the goal of our week: on שבתwe rest from the 39 מלאכת המשכן.
שבתis also a time of חינוך. For practical reasons, most of us simply have more time to spend with our children on שבתthan on any other day.
But also for more fundamental reasons. When our children observe us living שבתto the fullest, capitalizing on this day that if כולו חיי עולמים,
it redefines the identity of the rest of the week as well.
May we be זוכהto live our lives based on the ideals of עבודה וקדושה.

What is the preferred time for the Shabbos table to be set?
The Shabbos table should preferably be set prior to the onset of Shabbos, and on Shabbos morning, prior to the arrival of
those partaking in the Seuda, so that the Seuda can begin without delay.
What is the preferred time for Kiddush to be recited?
On Shabbos night, Kiddush should be recited shortly after davening Maariv in order to be mekadesh Shabbos as close to
its onset as possible; it is permissible to wait to increase one’s appetite. On both Leil Shabbos and Shabbos day, the
Shabbos seuda should begin immediately following Kiddush.
Note: The Mishna Brura writes that one should learn prior to the morning seuda.
What is the preferred time to finish being Mavir Sedra (reviewing the Parsha by reading the Psukim twice and the
Targum once)?
It is preferable to finish before the Shabbos day seuda. If this is not possible, one should try to finish before Mincha. If
this, too, is not possible, one should try to finish by Tuesday; and otherwise by the following Simchas Torah.
Additional notes pertaining to the requirement of being Mavir Sedra:
A yarei shamayim should preferably review both Targum and Rashi; however, one can fulfill the obligation with
either one. If one is mavir sedra only with Rashi, all Psukim on which there is no Rashi should be reviewed three
times.
The Psukim should be read prior to the Targum and/or Rashi.
One should be mechanech children that are of age to be Mavir Sedra.
One may begin to be Mavir Sedra from Mincha of the previous Shabbos.
