Welcome
Summer is vacation time, when we’re liable to slow things down a bit. That’s true in our
work and in our personal lives, when we take time off. It’s a bit less true at church! We
stay plenty busy at Galilee!
In July, our biggest events are Vacation Bible School and service camps. We’re doing
something new with VBS this year, running a sports-themed event. We’re happy to say
we’re nearly at max capacity. That’s awesome, because it represents great growth potential
for our church.
You can register for our summer happenings at galileeumc.org/events.
Also growing is the brand new Galilee Gift Garden. This project to grow fresh vegetables
for up to 85 families will require careful tending in the summer months. If you’d like to
volunteer, sign up at galileeumc.org/garden.
We hope to see you every Sunday at Galilee. But if you can’t be here in person, watch or
listen to our services online at galileeumc.org.
Have a great summer!

Life has a way of taking the life out of us. Often we go through situations
where the challenge seems so much greater than our strength.
God had called Joshua to take over from Moses and lead the Israelites into a paradigm
shift from wilderness wandering to promise-believing. In Canaan, they would not fight
for victory but fight from victory. God had a Promised Land in store for them, but they had
to grasp that reality, change their mindsets, and take action to receive it.
The same is true for us today. God is telling us that our best days—our “glory days”—are
still ahead of us. We only need to grasp that truth and live in faith to realize this promise.

Stephen Ministry is a congregational care program that equips lay
persons to provide Christian one-to-one care to those who are
experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our
congregation and community.
People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that
Stephen Ministers are the After People.
Stephen Ministers are there:
...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the
emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
....after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.
...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”
...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says,
“Welcome to your new home.”
...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away
—and the house suddenly seems empty.
...after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on,
and your loved one is led away.
...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever
dreamed possible.
...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.
...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many
times, but you still need to talk it out.
Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you—or
your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support
for as long after as needed.
What does a Stephen Minister do?
• Listens
• Encourages
• Keeps confidences
• Prays
• Supports
• Offers Christian friendship and love
If you are interested in learning more about Stephen Ministries at Galilee United
Methodist Church or if you know of someone who may be in need of a Stephen Minister,
contact the church office. ([email protected] or call 703-430-2203).
We especially encourage you, after you have learned more about Stephen Ministry, to
explore the possibility being a part of the Stephen Ministry training. If this is something
you wish to pursue, please contact the church office.

Ministry Highlights
Thanks to all who attended our Town Hall in June to hear
about all the work that is being done to meet the directives
of the NLI report, and in many cases, enhancing and creatively
adding to the mandates, including Grow Hour, Serve and more.
If you were not able to attend, it was recorded and is available
on the Galilee website for your viewing pleasure. We will
have another Town Hall later this year to include further NLI
updates.
The summer months will bring a very slight slowdown in pace for some of the NLI
work, but most all of it will continue at full force. When new developments occur, I’ll
pass them along as warranted, so look for updates in the Galilee e-Weekly, and/or
on the NLI page on the website throughout the summer.
I again want to express my gratitude for all the individuals – staff, leadership and
other volunteers – who are diligently working on NLI goals, objectives and man-
dates. Volunteers are giving of their free time and talents, and staff members are
working on these efforts in addition to their regularly assigned duties, and their
contributions are much appreciated.
If you have any questions about NLI, or would like to offer your time and talents,
please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected].

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person an
extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping people
connect with God, with one another, and with their life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me
on social media (facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up
the phone and call.

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
