Welcome

the treasure principle

Our world seems to operate on the “pleasure principle.” That’s a term coined by Sigmund
Freud to express the idea that the human mind naturally seeks pleasure and avoids pain.
When it comes to the choices we make in life, a popular dictum is: “If it feels good, do it.”
But God invites us a to a richer life. Following Jesus means choosing a different path. It’s
a road toward giving, rather than receiving. This choice is not defined by the pleasure
principle, but the Treasure Princlple.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” —Matthew 6:21.
This month, Galilee presents a sermon series called Give: The Treasure Principle. We hope
it helps you embrace the spiritual value of generosity.
Join us each Sunday in November at 9 or 11, or watch our services online at galileeumc.org.

November Message Series
Sundays @ GROW & GROUP

Small Groups

Sundays: Friends in Faith

10:15am · Adult Flex
Led by Bill Johnson

New study for the “Friends in Faith” Class this fall
We will begin the fall term with an in-depth study of The Parables
of Jesus. Each of the six sessions will include a video presentation
by a theology professor from one of several different seminaries,
followed by a class discussion. Jesus’ parables provided a means
for explaining complex spiritual knowledge through stories familiar
to His listeners in order to make the inherent truth understandable
to them. Seeing that these truths are still relevant to today’s society will be one of the
goals of the study.

Sundays: Today’s Group

10:15am · Room 200

Can’t commit to a long-term Sunday School or Bible Study? Today’s

Today’s Group is a small group that meets on Sunday mornings in Groups
Room 200. It is a drop-in group designed to discuss the sermon of
the day. If you have already heard the sermon - the discussion will
take you more in depth. If you haven’t heard it yet, you will have
the opportunity to get a preview and an understanding of what the sermon is about.

Sundays: Parents of Young Children

10:15am · Room 206
Led by Kristen Jenkins

The Bible
(and What’s the Big Picture?)

Our lessons will be focused around the Bible Project (https://thebibleproject.com/)
videos and study guides. Our questions will be focused on learning how the story of the
Old Testament points toward the coming of Christ and God’s big plan for us. We will also
review the Big Picture Bible and how the story takes shape that is accessible for our kids.
Nov 4 - Habakkuk
Nov 11 - Zephaniah
Nov 18 - Haggai
Nov 25 – No class – Thanksgiving

Small Groups

Sundays: Parents of Teens Class

Led by Kathi Miller and Chris Smith
10:15am - Fellowship Hall - No Class November 25
Parents meet and discuss issues relevant to teenagers and
soon-to-be teenagers. Conversation is centered on the
message and topics shared during the Youth GROW Hour and
Youth Group.

Galilee Book Club

Led by Chris Smith, Jennifer Shah & Mario Brathwaite
5:30pm - Adult Flex Room
4th Sunday of each month
Because of Thanksgiving - the discussion will be Dec. 2!

Come be a part of the Galilee Book Club, a group of Christians reading books. We choose
one title a month and meet at Galilee on the fourth Sunday @ 5:30 for a light meal and
open discussion. Contact [email protected] for details and to learn what we
are reading now.
November’s book is All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood.

Monday Women’s Evening Group

Led by Mary Ellen VanNederynen
6:30pm - Adult Flex
Join us for dinner and study.
From his beginnings as a humble carpenter to his all-important
role as the earthly father of Jesus Christ, Joseph’s place in the
nativity story is sometimes overlooked but contains valuable
lessons for all of us. Join Adam Hamilton as he examines
Christmas through the eyes of Joseph. Absent from much of the
biblical narrative, Joseph never spoke a word, but his courageous
actions were crucial to the birth of Christ and God’s salvation plan
for humanity.

Small Groups

Women’s Wednesday Morning Study

Led by Emilie Beckelhimer
9:30am - Adult Flex
The film classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” named the most
inspirational American film ever produced, has entertained and
inspired millions of viewers since its release in 1946.
The film was not made as a religious piece at all, but, as Greg
Asimakoupoulos asserts and proves, we can see God at work in
every scene. Each chapter highlights an important movie scene, relationship, or theme
and makes a spiritual point. Even those who haven’t seen the film will understand the
plot as Greg describes it, and people who know the movie so well they can recite the
dialogue will find themselves nodding in agreement, appreciating Greg’s thoughtful
insights.

How to Stop running the Show and Start Walking in Faith (6 week)
by Karen Ehman – Practical, biblically based steps for letting go of
the need to control. Let’s face it: many women are wired to control.
Trying to control it all is not only exhausting but can also cause us to
lose friends, and sometimes, the affection of our families. It can earn
us the label of control freak and send those within our sphere of influ-
ence packing. Help us put God in the rightful place he deserves in our
lives. Humorous and thought provoking.

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional opportunities for people to grow in faith.
We strive to prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship with God. Our greatest
tool for growth is the small group, where people come together to study the word and
build understanding, faith, and strong relationships. Our small groups are open to
everyone at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to see if a group is the right
fit for you.

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person
an extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping
people connect with God, with one another, and with their
life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me on social media
(facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up the phone and call.

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
