Welcome

Let Love Reign

Welcome to Galilee! We’re a church that believes that ordinary people can change the
world when we are led by love.
Our worship series this month focuses on human relationships. All people, single as well
as married, young and old, are included in Jesus’ admonition to love one another. Paying
attention to the Biblical lessons of love can make us better friends, better spouses,
better citizens, and better people.
Join us in February as we look at God’s will for our relationships and “Let Love Reign.”
If you’re new to Galilee, fill out a Connection Card so that we can get in touch. If you
have questions, pop into the office, call us at 703.430.2203, or you may email the church
office: [email protected].

Small Groups

Sundays: Friends in Faith

10:15am · Adult Flex
Led by Bill Johnson

Our Friends in Faith class will be studying a new short course entitled
“Creed: What Christians Believe and Why.” The primary resource for the
course will be a series of DVD lessons by Rev. Adam Hamilton, the senior
pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection near Kansas
City. Rev. Hamilton has written extensively on many aspects of the
Christian Faith and is much in demand as a speaker.

Sundays: Today’s Group

10:15am · Room 200

Can’t commit to a long-term Sunday School or Bible Study? Today’s

Today’s Group is a small group that meets on Sunday mornings in Groups
Room 200. It is a drop-in group designed to discuss the sermon of
the day. If you have already heard the sermon - the discussion will
take you more in depth. If you haven’t heard it yet, you will have
the opportunity to get a preview and an understanding of what the sermon is about.

Old Testament points toward the coming of Christ and God’s big plan for us. We will also
review the Big Picture Bible and how the story takes shape that is accessible for our kids.

February 3 - Ecclesiastes Pt. 1 February 17 - Song of Songs
February 10 - Ecclesiastes Pt. 2 February 24 - Jeremiah

Sundays: NOOMA

10:15am · Room 202
Led by Chris Richter
NOOMA is a series of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus.
Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now,
and anybody can be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to ques-
tion, to wrestle with the implications of what he was saying and doing. Wherever he
went, Jesus started discussions about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is
always inviting us to open our eyes and join in.
No prep needed - each is a stand alone class.

Small Groups

Sundays: Parents of Teens Class

Led by Lisa Collins
10:15am - Fellowship Hall
Parents meet and discuss issues relevant to teenagers and
soon-to-be teenagers. Conversation is centered on the
message and topics shared during the Youth GROW Hour and
Youth Group.

details and to learn what we are reading now.

Monday Women’s Evening Group

Led by Mary Ellen VanNederynen
6:30pm - Adult Flex
Join us for dinner and study.
When it comes to anxiety, depression, and stress-related illnesses,
America is the frontrunner. Thankfully, there’s a practical prescription
for dealing with them.
Does the uncertainty and chaos of life keep you up at night?
Is irrational worry your constant companion?
Could you use some calm?
Anxious for Nothing invites readers to delve into Philippians 4:6-7.:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiv-
ing, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Small Groups

Women’s Wednesday Morning Study
Begins Feb. 20
Led by Emilie Beckelhimer
9:30am - Adult Flex

Are you ready to become the person God has called you to be? In
A Life Beyond Amazing, bestselling author Dr. David Jeremiah
uncovers God’s strategy for change and challenges you to make
nine important decisions that will transform your heart, your life,
and your world.

This life-changing book explores the nine qualities of character that carry us forward.
Three of these have to do with our relationship with ourselves, three deal with interactions
with other people, and three of them focus on our relationship with God. Spiritual
principles are true in any situation. But we must make a conscious decision to employ
them in our daily lives.

God has given us wisdom for these days. A Life Beyond Amazing answers the questions
that keep us up at night and shows that the way forward is a reminder of who we are in
Christ and why it matters.

Wednesday: PrimeTimers Luncheon Prime

Son-Rise Thursday Morning Study

6:30am We meet every Thursday morning at 6:30am
Newcomers are welcome. Contact: [email protected].

Location: The Holiday Inn: 45425 Holiday Drive, Sterling, VA 20166
There was something different about the way Jesus communicated
with the lost: He didn’t force answers upon people, He asked
questions. So why don’t we?
Following Christ’s example, author Randy Newman has been using
a questioning style of evangelism for decades. In this provocative
book, he provides practical insights to help Christians engage others in meaningful
spiritual conversations. He challenges us to examine how we think about people,
their questions, and our crucial message.

Thursday Morning Sisters in Christ Study Group

Led by Nancy Epperson and Peggy Whale
9:30am - Adult Flex
What is shaking in your world? Possibly your future, your faith, your
family, or finances? It’s a shaky world out there. In Unshakable Hope:
Building Our Lives on the Promises of God, pastor and author Max
Lucado offers encouraging guidance for overcoming sadness and
despair, renewing a sense of purpose, and triumphantly facing the fears of the future.

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional opportunities for people to grow in faith.
We strive to prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship with God. Our greatest
tool for growth is the small group, where people come together to study the word and
build understanding, faith, and strong relationships. Our small groups are open to
everyone at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to see if a group is the right
fit for you.

Stephen Ministry is a congregational care program that equips lay
persons to provide Christian one-to-one care to those who are
experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our
congregation and community.

Answers to the Most Frequently Asked
Questions about Stephen Ministry®

• What are Stephen Ministers?
Stephen Ministers are laypeople trained to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered
care. They have a compassionate heart for those who are hurting, and they’re
equipped with caring ministry skills by their congregation’s Stephen Leaders. A
Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that
person once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and
spiritual support.

• In what types of situations do Stephen Ministers provide care?
Stephen Ministers provide care to individuals facing difficult times in life—grief,
cancer, divorce, financial difficulties, hospitalization, chronic illness, job loss,
disability, loneliness, a spiritual crisis, or other life struggles.

• How does Stephen Ministry benefit pastors?
Stephen Ministry supports pastors by deepening, expanding, and extending
the caregiving capacity of their congregations. A team of Stephen Ministers,
together with a pastor, can provide ongoing care for more people than the
pastor could provide alone. This also frees pastors to invest more time in other
important ministry areas.

• Do Stephen Ministers care for people outside their congregation?
Yes. Stephen Ministers often provide care for people in the broader community,
enhancing and expanding a congregation’s outreach in a powerful way.

If you are interested in learning more about Stephen Ministries at Galilee United
Methodist Church or if you know of someone who may be in need of a Stephen Minister,
contact the church office. ([email protected] or call 703-430-2203).

Next Level Innovations

FEBRUARY 2019
NEXT LEVEL INNOVATIONS UPDATE

We’re moving forward in 2019 with Galilee’s Next Level Innovations:

Making Space for God to Work
The Building Use Study Committee, a group of staff and laity, is providing input to our ar-
chitect on how Galilee’s building is currently used and how it may be used in the future.
This will help the architect design the renovation of the original building.

Maturing Discipleship
We’ve started a new Grow Hour group led by Chris Richter. It is based around short films
that explore our world from the perspective of Jesus. Each week offers a stand-alone
message, with no prep needed, so participants don’t need to worry about missing weeks
or a “heavy workload.” Drop in to the new group, called NOOMA (a phonetic spelling of
the Greek word for wind, “pneuma”) Sundays @ 10:15.

A Heart for the Local Community
Our relationships with local schools continue to deepen. Three new Rolling Ridge
Elementary mentors will be trained mid-January, bringing the total to 17 for this school
year. Rolling Ridge has also invited Galilee to be part of their Spring Carnival (scheduled
for April 27).

If you have a question, thought, or concern about any NLI related topic, please email me
at [email protected].

supporting conference and church ministries so that they can be the hands

ALTAR GUILD

Did you know that Galilee has an army? It is a silent army and a busy one. It’s a
volunteer army that we call the Altar Guild. They make our sanctuary a great place
to worship God.
The Altar Guild raises wall banners and paraments on the altar to fit the season and
the scripture. They prepare communion and do the clean up afterwards. They water
plants and keep the pews tidy and stocked with tissues, envelopes, giving cards,
pencils, and the all-important Scribble Sheets for Little Methodists.
The Altar Guild also uses natural beauty to glorify God by arranging for flowers on
Sunday mornings. If you would like to give flowers for a birthday, anniversay, special
memory, graduation, birth of a child, or just to honor God, the Altar Guild can do
that. The cost is $35 for a regular arrangement. Special arrangements may be more.
Sign up on the Connection Card or on the flower calendar
located in the lobby on the column closest to the office.
Leave your phone number and you will be called about the
type/color of flowers you would like.
For more information about the Altar Guild, you can email:
[email protected].

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person
an extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping
people connect with God, with one another, and with their
life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me on social media

Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
