Welcome

Is it August already? Time is flying by. Galilee’s final summer camp, Summer Serve, will
send 4th through 8th grade students on community missions during the week of August
6. Then it’s back to school!
As Backpack Buddies gears up for 2018-19, a team of fourteen met last month to prepare
for another year of this valuable food program. Join us August 14 at Panera in Sterling for
our first fundraiser of the school year.
The Blessing of the Backpacks will be August 19 during both services. Later that evening,
we’ll host a Back to School Picnic at the fire pit behind the church.
It’s not just kids who are going “back to school.” We also welcome back the sanctuary
choir (August 15) and bell choir (August 23) after a summer hiatus.
We know you’ll find plenty of ways to serve the Lord at Galilee. If you’re new here,
welcome. If not, welcome back!

Life has a way of taking the life out of us. Often we go through situations
where the challenge seems so much greater than our strength.
God had called Joshua to take over from Moses and lead the Israelites into a paradigm
shift from wilderness wandering to promise-believing. In Canaan, they would not fight
for victory but fight from victory. God had a Promised Land in store for them, but they had
to grasp that reality, change their mindsets, and take action to receive it.
The same is true for us today. God is telling us that our best days—our “glory days”—are
still ahead of us. We only need to grasp that truth and live in faith to realize this promise.

WESLEY RINGERS

Do you know the difference between your right hand and your left hand? Can you count
to 4? Are you curious or would like to know what handbells are about? There will be an
information meeting on Sunday, August 12 at 12pm in the music room. This is for anyone
interested in handbells.
Wesley Ringers will have their first rehearsal on Thursday, August 23 from 7:00 - 8:30pm.

NEW SMALL GROUPS

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional opportunities for people to grow in faith.
We strive to prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship with God. Our greatest
tool for growth is the small group, where people come together to study the word and
build understanding, faith, and strong relationships. Our small groups are open to
everyone at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to see if a group is the right
fit for you.

Ministry Highlights

While it may seem that all is quiet on the “NLI front’, many folks are
busy continuing the behind the scenes work of moving forward on
NLI objectives. Here are just a few of those efforts:
NLI 2 – Discipleship
The primary focus of this initiative over the summer has been to
inventory the many books and videos that Galilee owns in support
of small groups and studies, and a survey is being created for cur-
rent and former small group leaders on what has worked for them,
where improvements can be made and to identify interested individuals who would
be willing to serve as a small group leader. If you have an interest in that opportunity,
please contact Lori O’Connell via the Galilee office.
NLI 3 – Heart for the Local Community
The Backpack Buddies team recently met to plan for the new school year that begins
later this month, and will hit the ground running under new leadership. If you’re
interested in being a part of this ministry, be sure to reach out to Rebecca Makowski.
Look for information in the coming weeks on a prayer walk to be held at Galilee in
support of not only Backpack Buddies, but other Serve ministries as well.
The DeShong Giftback Garden has been thriving this summer – the quantities of fresh
produce going to local food initiatives has been outstanding. Volunteer opportunities
are plentiful to help with this effort.
As always, I ask that you continue to pray for those who are engaged in the work of
NLI, and share any questions and concerns with me at [email protected].

WHAT DO STEPHEN MINISTERS DO?

Ever Thought about Becoming a Stephen Minister?

Galilee will be training another class of Stephen Ministers beginning in January. Stephen
Ministers work alongside our pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and
spiritual support to people who are going through a difficult time, such as divorce, grief,
hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, relocation, chronic illness, or loneliness.
If you have gifts for caring, encouragement, and listening, please begin to prayerfully
consider whether you might want to be part of this exciting ministry. If you think you
might be interested, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Ann Kuo, Marcia Martin,
Tammy Mitchell or Mickie Stalcup. You can also email: [email protected]

Do It All in Jesus’ Name

Stephen Ministers bring distinctively Christian care to those in need. They use both
words and deeds to express Christ’s care for others—listening and comforting, calling on
the training they have received and employing the tools of faith. If this job description
fits your personal goals for ministry, consider becoming a Stephen Minister. A training
class is starting in January. For more information, contact the church office, 703-430-
2203 or email: [email protected].

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person an
extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping people
connect with God, with one another, and with their life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me
on social media (facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up
the phone and call.

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
