Welcome

“It’s A Wonderful Life”

Welcome to Galilee! We’re re-watching a classic this month.
To illustrate a principle, Jesus often used a parable—an earthly story with a heavenly
meaning. We see the same practice in the stories we tell again and again at Christmas,
like the story told in Frank Capra’s film,“It’s a Wonderful Life.”
On its surface,“It’s a Wonderful Life” is the story of a man facing material challenges—and an
angel earning his wings. But it’s also a story about goodness, about godliness, about miracles,
prayer, and redemption. It’s not too much of a stretch to talk about “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a
kind of gospel story.
Join us this advent season as Galilee explores the meaning of Christmas—and life—through
a worship series based on this beloved holiday classic.
If you’re new to Galilee, fill out a Connection Card so that we can get in touch. If you have
questions, pop into the office, call us at 703.430.2203, or email [email protected].

From his beginnings as a humble carpenter to his all-important
role as the earthly father of Jesus Christ, Joseph’s place in the
nativity story is sometimes overlooked but contains valuable
lessons for all of us. Join Adam Hamilton as he examines
Christmas through the eyes of Joseph. Absent from much of the
biblical narrative, Joseph never spoke a word, but his courageous
actions were crucial to the birth of Christ and God’s salvation plan
for humanity.

Women’s Wednesday Morning Study

Led by Emilie Beckelhimer
9:30am - Adult Flex
The film classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” named the most
inspirational American film ever produced, has entertained and
inspired millions of viewers since its release in 1946.
The film was not made as a religious piece at all, but, as Greg
Asimakoupoulos asserts and proves, we can see God at work in
every scene. Each chapter highlights an important movie scene, relationship, or theme
and makes a spiritual point. Even those who haven’t seen the film will understand the
plot as Greg describes it, and people who know the movie so well they can recite the
dialogue will find themselves nodding in agreement, appreciating Greg’s thoughtful
insights.

Thursday Morning Sisters in Christ Study Group

Led by Nancy Epperson and Peggy Whale
9:30am - Adult Flex
Nov. 29 - December 13
In his powerful yet compassionate voice, Pastor Rick Warren sounds
the clarion call to “remember the reason for the season,” taking us on
a journey back in time to the most wonderful story of all--the birth of
the baby Jesus.
Pastor Warren encourages you to identify and confront what drains peace from your life.
He explains that the way to respond to these “peace-robbers” is to learn how to surrender
to God’s will and not feel defeated or discouraged when life does not go as planned. True
peace of mind is found by having unshakeable faith--knowing that God will guide you
through life’s challenges.

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional opportunities for people to grow in faith.
We strive to prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship with God. Our greatest
tool for growth is the small group, where people come together to study the word and
build understanding, faith, and strong relationships. Our small groups are open to
everyone at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to see if a group is the right
fit for you.

Stephen Ministry is a congregational care program that equips lay
persons to provide Christian one-to-one care to those who are
experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our
congregation and community.

Stephen Ministers are known as the After People.
Stephen Ministers are there:

...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the
emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
....after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.
...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”
...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says,

“Welcome to your new home.”
...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away

—and the house suddenly seems empty.
...after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on,

and your loved one is led away.
...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever

dreamed possible.
...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.
...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many

times, but you still need to talk it out.
Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you—or
your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support
for as long after as needed.

If you are interested in learning more about Stephen Ministries at Galilee United
Methodist Church or if you know of someone who may be in need of a Stephen Minister,
contact the church office. ([email protected] or call 703-430-2203).
We especially encourage you, after you have learned more about Stephen Ministry, to
explore the possibility being a part of the Stephen Ministry training. If this is something
you wish to pursue, please contact the church office. Classes will begin in 2019!

Next Level Innovations

DECEMBER 2018 NEXT LEVEL
INNOVATIONS UPDATE

Thank you to all who attended our Town Hall on November 4 to hear about what’s
happening with Next Level Innovations. If you missed it, it’s on the Galilee website –
go to “Podcast & Video” under the “Church” tab, and you’ll find it.
We’ll have more news in 2019 about our project to rehabilitate the original building. As
trustee Jim Cox noted at the Town Hall, we’ve identified an architect to begin the facility
study. It is a detailed process, and updates will be shared whenever possible.
In the new year, I invite each of you to share your gifts and talents in whatever way you
feel called – to lead a new small group or join an existing group, to participate in a Serve
project, or to volunteer on one of the many committees and ministry areas we have at
Galilee. New ideas, new leaders are always welcome!
Finally, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ and to close out 2018, I want to
offer my sincere thanks for all the people who have contributed to the work of NLI, either
through a one time task, an ongoing commitment, or through prayer for Galilee and the
future of our church home.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, suggestions or thoughts relative
to NLI and Galilee. I wish you many blessings and peace through this holiday season.
Merry Christmas & Happy 2019!

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person
an extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping
people connect with God, with one another, and with their
life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me on social media
(facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up the phone and call.

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
