6 American Gold Cup

Foreword
By the FEI President

On behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale, I am absolutely delighted to welcome you to North Salem
for the second Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping qualifier from the North American Eastern Sub League
for the 2017/2018 season.

The FEI World Cup™ is a global enterprise which began with the creation of the FEI World Cup™ Jumping
series in 1978 and has since been extended to include Dressage (since 1985), Driving (since 2001) and more
recently Vaulting (since 2010). The concept is simple, a global series where athletes compete at multiple
events within geographical leagues dotted around the world in order to earn their place at a star studded
Final and a shot at the ultimate indoor trophy in each of the disciplines. This is the beauty of the FEI World
Cup™ format, which is not only synonymous with top sport, but also about stimulating equestrian across all
four corners of the globe, and as a result promoting and actively developing the sport in emerging regions.

There is no doubt that the series have become a major player on the international calendar for Jumping,
Dressage, Driving and Vaulting and this season alone there are over 150 qualifiers all over the world leading to
the four Finals in 2018. France will be hosting three of those four finals with the Longines FEI World Cup™
Jumping and FEI World Cup™ Dressage Finals in Paris next April and the FEI World Cup™ Driving Final in
Bordeaux in February, while for Vaulting, the Final returns to Dortmund next March for the third consecutive time.

This new season is filled with promise for fantastic sport, and, on behalf of the Fédération Equestre Interna-
tionale, I’d like to thank Longines most sincerely for their vital contribution which ensures quality competition
and management throughout the series. Equestrian sport has expanded significantly in recent years and the
Swiss watchmaking experts have played a key role in that development.

I’d also like to send my very best wishes to the Organising Committee, their partners and sponsors, all the
volunteers and the many officials and stewards working hand in hand to deliver an unforgettable fixture.

May the 2017/2018 season be filled with many great sporting moments as it continues to bring equestrian
sport to a whole new audience while taking great care of the health, and welfare, of our most loyal and noble
partner - the horse.

Ingmar De Vos
FEI President
