F Ulag of kraine

The Ukrainian flag consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width.
The top is blue, the bottom is yellow. Blue and yellow, the colours of
the sky, mountains, streams, and golden fields had symbolized Kyivan
Rus' long before the introduction of Christianity.
The origins of Ukraine's flag can be traced back to the convention of
the Supreme Ruthenian Council, meeting in Lviv in October 1848. At
this meeting, an emblem (coat of arms) for the Ukrainians was adopted.
This was a golden rampant lion on blue At the same time, (light) blue
and yellow was accepted as the national colours of the Ukrainians. For

yellow over (light) blue, were used. The Ukrainian colours became

The Trident

The National Emblem is a trident. The first image of a trident
appeared in the IX century A.D. When Ihor, Prince of Kyivan
Rus' from 912 to.945, sent ambassadors to sign a treaty with
the Byzantine emperor, they sealed the document with a
trident. As the official emblem of the Kyivan princes, the
trident was stamped on coins and seals; it was depicted on
porcelain and in frescos. It is thought that the trident
represented -the division of the world into three spheres: the
earthly, the celestial and the spiritual — as well as the union
of the three natural elements: air, water and earth. The
trident was endorsed as the National Emblem of Ukraine, and
the blue and yellow flag — as the National Flag of Ukraine —
by the Verkhovna Rada in 1992.

Ukrainian Anthem

The Ukrainian anthem, «Shche Ne Vmerla Ukraina» («Ukraine
Has Not Yet Perished»), is of quite recent origin. In Western
Ukraine after 1848 there were usually two songs which
enjoyed popularity at national celebrations and patriotic
demonstrations. The verse of Ivan Hushalevych - We Bring
You Peace, Brothers - was recognized by The Supreme
Ruthenian Council in Lviv as the national anthem of the
Galician Ukrainians.
In 1863 the Lviv journal Meta (the Goal) published the poem
of Paul Chubynsky «Shche Ne Vmerla Ukraina», which was
mistakenly ascribed to Taras Shevchenko. In the same year it
was set to music by the Galician composer Michael Verbytsky,
first for solo and later choral performance. This song, as a
result of its catchy melody and patriotic text, rapidly became
popular and gained broad acceptance among the Galician
population among the Ukrainians.
