Welcome to Brewster and
Stony Brook Field!

Message from the President

Welcome to Stony Brook Field — the home of the defending Cape
League Champion Brewster Whitecaps.

Sorry, just had to get that in. While Whitecaps’ fans didn’t have to wait
quite as long as Boston Red Sox or Chicago Cubs fans (of the latter,
someone once observed, “…anyone can have a bad century…”), our
latest championship was 17 years in the making.

The Whitecaps playoff run (9 games in 9 days with 5 elimination games Chris Kenney, President
(see page 28) was a fantastic exhibition of skill and commitment on the Brewster Baseball Club

part of the players and coaching staff. Our volunteers and interns were equally outstanding.

But perhaps the most gratifying aspect of last year’s championship was the way Brewster, as a community, rallied
around the team. The outpouring of support was extremely heartening and instrumental in the team’s success.
As an aside, while no attendance audits were conducted, it sure seemed like half the Town was there for the final
game. Thank you so much!

We’ll always fondly remember 2017, but a new season is underway as we celebrate the 30th
Anniversary of Brewster’s participation in the renowned Cape Cod Baseball League. As I’m sure
you realize, it’s no small effort to field a team in the Cape League. Lots of host families, adult
volunteers, interns and coaches are necessary to pull it off. In fact, our annual budget exceeds

Y E A R S $150,000. As a volunteer organization, we continue to rely on the help of both the immediate and
extended community. If you’d like to help, please go to our website at brewsterwhitecaps.com.

See the different ways that you could support the Whitecaps and amp up your baseball and summer fun.

Thanks so much for coming to Stony Brook
and supporting the Brewster Whitecaps.

Aaron Judge Was Here

It was summer 2012, and he was just a bigger-than-normal college player from Fresno State. He had to duck
when entering the dugout. He struck out more than he would have liked. He crushed a few balls to be sure, but who
knew that five years later, he would become a household name. When he was a MLB rookie, he belted 52 home runs,
got more All Star votes than any other American League player, won the Home Run Derby and was unanimously voted
American League Rookie of the year. He made a lot of friends when he was here in Brewster, because that’s the kind of guy
he is. Thanks, Aaron, for spending that summer with us and being a true team player. And for not breaking our scoreboard.

Jamie Shevchik, Head Coach

Jamie Shevchik returns for his fourth year as Head Coach of the Whitecaps. In
2017, Coach Shevchik led Brewster to its first League Championship in 17 years.

During his 17-year career as head coach at Keystone College (PA),
Coach Shevchik has built the Giants into a regional power, consistently
ranked among the nation’s top 20 Division III programs. Keystone has
won 14 straight conference championships. Twice he has led Keystone to the
NCAA Division III Collegiate World Series, finishing as the NCAA Division III
National Runner-Up in 2016. Through 2017, Shevchik’s teams compiled an
impressive, 574-186 overall record, a .755 winning percentage. He has been
honored as the CSAC Coach of the Year six times in the past nine seasons.

Since 2010, Coach Shevchik has seen seven players selected in the MLB Draft.
Over the past six years, Coach Shevchik has had 32 former Keystone players
sign independent contracts with Major League teams.

Coach Shevchik had a solid record in collegiate summer baseball before coming
Photo: SportsPix to the Cape League, including an eight-year run as the head coach at Danbury

Photo: SportPix in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. His Westerners made five
NECBL playoff appearances and won their division in 2010 and 2012. His Cape League Whitecaps compiled the second
best won-‐loss record in the circuit in 2015.

In 1993 and 1994 as aplayer, he was an outstanding pitcher and outfielder at Keystone. Following his graduation from
Mid Valley HighSchool and his time at Keystone, he continued his baseball career at East Stroudsburg University.

Jamie currently resides with his wife Maria and daughters Brielle, Giana, and Raina in Clarks Summit, PA.

Assistant Coaches

Chip Dill - Pitching Coach

Chip returns to Brewster for his second tour as the Whitecaps pitching coach. Chip was
most recently a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Tennessee. Before that he
was on the baseball coaching staff at Tusculum College. In 2013 he was the pitching coach
for Division II California Baptist University. From 2009-12, Dill was the assistant pitching
coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Dill played two seasons at Cerritos College
(1982-83). Although drafted three times in 1982-83, he decided to enroll and play the 1984
season at the University of Arizona. Dill also played in the Cape Cod League in 1983,
winning the league title with Harwich. Dill served 25 years with the Costa Mesa Fire
Department. He and his wife, Priscilla, have two grown children, Kyle and Hannah.

Tommy Weber - Bench Coach/Infield Coach

A Division I coach for more than 20 years with St. Francis College and Wagner College,
Tommy Weber is in his third summer with Brewster. He brings the Whitecaps proven
player development and leadership skills. He also boasts successful summer college
baseball experience, thanks to six years managing the Staten Island Tide in the Atlantic
Collegiate Baseball League, a team he founded in 2010. In his six years at the helm, the
Tide earned three division titles and three Championship Game appearances, winning
the title in 2011. The team was 137 – 86 on his watch. In 2014 Coach Weber also worked
with the Brooklyn Cyclones, New York Mets Class A short season club. He is a professor
at St. John’s University’s School of Sports Management, where his courses include
Techniques of Effective Coaching and Current Issues in Sports. A record setting shortstop
at Wagner, he signed with the Boston Red Sox where a spring training injury ended his
playing career. Tom is an accomplished golfer and jazz pianist. He lives with his wife
Carolyn in New York City.

8

Assistant Coaches

Ryan Smyth - Third Base Coach/Hitting Coach

After six years as an assistant coach at Keystone College, Ryan was promoted to
associate head coach in 2017. This is his third summer with the Brewster Whitecaps.
At Keystone, he coaches the team’s hitters and catchers and coordinates recruiting.
Smyth has coached more than 20 players in the past five years who have signed
professional contracts. He has significant summer college baseball coaching experience,
including six years in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) both as
a hitting coach and manager before making the jump up to the Cape. As a player,
he was a two-year standout at Keystone after stints at Boston College and Brookdale
Community College (NJ). In his two seasons with Keystone, he hit .349 with 87 hits, 19
doubles, 21 home runs, and 73 RBI’s. He ranks fifth all time for career home runs (21)
after playing for only two seasons. He played professionally for the Evansville Otters in
the Frontier League.

Neil Barbella - Assistant Pitching Coach/Bullpen Coach

Neil Barbella was most recently the associate head coach for the College of Staten
Island. He was an assistant coach for the Dolphins for six seasons before that.
During Barbella’s tenure CSI recorded ten City University of New York Athletic
Conference titles. Coach Barbella also has summer league experience as an assistant
coach for two teams in the ACBL. In 2007, he was honored to be an assistant coach for
the City University of New York All-Star team on a Goodwill Tour of Italy, where
the team played games with Italian pro teams and put on clinics for local baseball
programs. Barbella’s early coaching experience came as an assistant at Baruch
College and John Jay College. He and his wife, Teri, reside in Staten Island, where
they raised their three children: Neil (26), Erika (24) and Nicole (21).

Will Delgado - First Base Coach/Youth Clinics Director

Will returns for his third year with the Whitecaps. This season, he will direct the
Whitecaps Youth Clinics and the Advanced Skills Sessions. 2018 marked his third year
with the Mercy College baseball program, this year as an assistant coach. At Mercy, he
has held various responsibilities, including player development, hitting coach and
player recruitment. A native of Puerto Rico, Will grew up in Florida, where he attended
and played baseball, basketball and football at Lake Howell High School. Will went on
to play at Catonsville Community College, where he was a two-year starter and helped
his club make the Region XX D-II Baseball Tournament in the first year. After
Catonsville, he moved on to Keystone College in Pennsylvania and was managed by
Jamie Shevchik. As a team captain Will helped lead the Giants to their first appearance
in the D-III National Tournament. Will also completed his bachelor’s degree at Keystone,
majoring in Biology.

Jason Kanzler - Outfield Coach

Coach Kanzler returns to the Whitecaps for his second summer on the Cape. This
spring, Jason coached for Katy (TX) High School, working with outfielders and hitters.
As a player, he was a centerfielder in the Twins organization and led the High-A Fort
Myers Miracles to a Florida State League championship. Jason played his D-1 college
ball at Buffalo, where he was named the university’s Male Athlete of the Year. In his
senior year, he was the MAC Player of the Year, a first team All-Region selection and an
All-American. He was the first player in Division I history to win multiple Rawlings
Gold Gloves. No stranger to summer ball, Jason was part of Whitecaps’ bench coach

Tony Locey Sophomore 6’3” 235

RHP Georgia Last season for the Whitecaps, Tony Locey was a key player in
Brewster’s 2017 title winning season with a 2.75 ERA in seven
regular season starts on the Cape. In the postseason, Locey had
two solid outings allowing only three runs in both starts. This
season at Georgia, Locey had a 6-2 record and a 4.26 ERA in
44.1 innings pitched for the Bulldogs as of May 17. He struck
out 50 (second best on the team) , walked 23 and held
opposing hitters to a modest .226 batting average. The big
righty’s numbers have improved from a season ago with
Georgia when Tony had a 6.38 ERA as a freshman. In high

state of Georgia by Perfect Game.

Seth Lonsway Georgia Freshman 6’2” 240 RHP

LHP Ohio State Freshman 6’2” 195

Although declared ineligible by the NCAA to play his 2018
freshman season, Seth Lonsway is one of the most gifted
pitchers Ohio State has recruited in the past few years. He was
projected to be a top starter for the Buckeyes this year. The
left-hander has a fastball that reaches the mid-90s and a slider
that Prep Baseball Report called “filthy.” His high school
accolades included a perfect game and a 17-strikeout single-
game performance. The Cincinnati Reds drafted Lonsway in
the 19th round out of high school, but Lonsway came to Ohio
State with hopes of improving his draft stock for the next time
around.

Brandon Martorano

C/OF North Carolina Sophomore 6’2” 195 R/R

After filling in as a part time catcher last year in his freshman
season with UNC, Brandon has made the most of his
opportunities. In 2018 he had 41 starts behind the plate as of
May 17th. Offensively, Martorano hit for an average of .254
and racked up an impressive .515 slugging percentage, thanks
to his nine doubles and eight home runs, second on the team in
both those categories. He also drove in 30 Tarheel teammates.
Martorano’s freshman campaign was not his best work
offensively, but behind the plate the six-foot-two catcher threw
out four of 10 runners on the base paths. As a youth player, he
won a gold medal with Team USA in 2013. The Arizona
Diamondbacks drafted Martorano in the 30th round of the
2016 MLB Draft.

Nine Dizzy Days in August

Reflections of a Championship

The Brewster Whitecaps won the 2017 Cape Cod League Championship. And like the
regular season that preceded the playoffs, it didn’t come easy. The Whitecaps were a .500 team,
finishing the regular schedule with a record of 21-21 and two ties. In the playoffs they would

first face Yarmouth Dennis, league champions the last three years in a row, with a 2017
regular season record of 27-16-1. If they somehow survived that, their next playoff opponent

would be Orleans with the league’s best record of 29-15. There weren’t too many people
betting on the Whitecaps. But in those Nine Dizzy Days in August, all bets were off.

Whitecaps intern Aodhán Doyle contributed to this piece.

Game 1 Mickey Gasper finished 2-4
and drove in two runs for the
Saturday, August 5th Whitecaps, but Brewster couldn't
At Yarmouth-Dennis hang on to a 5-3 ninth inning lead.
Red Sox 8
Whitecaps 5

yet managed to lose 8-5. Facing two
elimination games in a row, turns out the
Whitecaps had the Red Sox right where they wanted them.

Brewster had two options: win or go

former, soundly defeating the Red Sox to

series at one apiece. Play on.

It was all hugs and smiles for the Whitecaps
after their 8-7 victory over the Red Sox in Yarmouth.
A.J. Graffanino's (No. 6) RBI-double in the tenth
proved to be the game-winner and series-clincher.

Brewster once again blew a two-run lead in the 9th inning. But the tie game’s 10th
inning featured a pinch-hit single from Zack Gahagan (UNC) and an RBI Double by
A.J. Graffanino (Washington), and suddenly, the Whitecaps had eliminated the
three-peat Champion Red Sox. Don’t pinch me, I might wake up.

Game 4 Hunter Bishop provided the only source
of offense for the Whitecaps in game one,

Those Orleans guys are good.

a two-run home run to left, tied the score
Wednesday, August 9th at two in the second inning and propelled

Facing elimination for the third
time and just to make it interesting,
Brewster spotted Orleans a 2-0 lead
early, committing three more errors. But then Brewster’s offense exploded, scoring eight runs on
twelve hits as the Whitecaps forced a decisive game three. No way they can do this again, right?

Game 6

Thursday, August 10th
At Orleans
Whitecaps 2
Firebirds 1

In a must-win game three,
Conor McNamara out dueled
the Orleans Firebirds in his
first Cape League start.

Conor McNamara (Marist) was pitching in the Hamptons League on July 26th. He threw just five
regular season innings for Brewster, all in relief. But given the start on this day against the league’s
best team, he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. Combined with a dramatic 8th
inning, two-out Marty Costes home run to break a 1-1 tie, this game sent Orleans packing and
Brewster into the finals vs. Bourne. Impossible, except it happened.

Game 7 Whitecaps walk off
with game one win
Friday, August 11th over Bourne.
At Brewster
Whitecaps 5 After blowing their third two-run 9th
Braves 4 inning lead of the playoffs, Brewster
(10 innings) loaded the bases in the home half of

the 10th with two outs. Chandler
Taylor (Alabama) fell behind 1-2 in

the count, then took a curveball
off his right foot to force in a run,
producing the walk-off (limp-off?)
victory. You can’t make this stuff up.

Game 8 Nick Dunn had three runs batted
in and reached in all four of his
Saturday, August 12th plate appearances, but even
At Bourne Dunn couldn't stop the Braves,
Braves 13 who scored eight runs in the
Whitecaps 7 bottom of the fifth.

Photo: SportsPix While the rain at Doran Park on Saturday was
only a light drizzle, the bottom of the 5th
inning was a deluge. Leading 7-3 at the time,
Brewster couldn’t close the flood gates on
Bourne as the Braves racked up an eight-run
inning to take game two of the best-of-three
Championship series. Next up: Brewster’s
fifth elimination game of the playoffs.

Game 9 4,591 fans packed Stony Brook Field to Miraculous Costes’ catch
saves the Season.

Sunday, August 13th watch lefty Will Tribucher spin 6 2/3

At Brewster shutout innings. In the playoffs, he put up a

Whitecaps 2 microscopic 0.55 ERA, including two wins

Braves 0 and one huge save over Orleans. Brewster’s

scoring came on Hunter Bishop’s (Arizona State)

third home run of the playoffs and sacrifice fly by

Marty Costes (Maryland). But it was the latter’s circus

catch in left field in the 7th that saved the season for the

Whitecaps. With Bourne’s hottest hitter, Lyle Lin

(Arizona State) at the plate with two outs, a full count

and the runners going on the pitch, Lin drove the ball

into deep left. Diving at full speed, Costes

fully extended, gloved the ball and landed hard

on the warning track. Fans gasped as something fell

to the ground, but it was the left fielder’s hat, not the ball.

That he raised in triumph, having robbed Lin of a certain

bases-clearing double that would have given Bourne a 3-2 lead.

Bourne battled, but Brewster’s two-run lead held up.

And then the celebration, like nothing seen in Brewster for - well, for 18 years since Brewster last
won it all. Never before had a Cape League championship team taken all three best-of-three series to

the limit, playing nine playoff games in nine consecutive days. So the Whitecaps played a season
total of 53 games – the most possible and the most of all time. And Brewster faced elimination in

five of the nine playoff games, another all time Cape League record.

Overall, it was a pretty good year.

31

Growing Pros for 30 Years

The Brewster Whitecaps have had many players who have gone on to play professionally.
Here's a list of players who were on Major League rosters during 2017. Many more are honing
their skills in the Minors, still hoping to punch their ticket to The Show. Others have played pro
and retired, or are not active at this time. Remember: Every time you watch a Cape League game,
you’re seeing an average of six future Major Leaguers in action. Part of the fun is guessing which ones!

YEARS

Brewster and Beyond

To celebrate the Whitecaps’ 30th, we took a look back at 10 players of note
who passed through Brewster in the last three decades, on their way to
The Show. What did our yearbook say about each the summer he played
here? Was it clairvoyant, ironic or just plain amusing? How did he fare
once he got to the Big Leagues? Read on and see for yourself.

For a full list of Whitecaps players on Major League rosters last year, see page 32.

Mike Myers | Brewster 1988-89
1988 Whitecaps Yearbook said:

“An excellent left-handed prospect for the Whitecaps”

1995 – 2007 Major League stats:
W L ERA G GS SV IP SO WHIP
25 24 4.29 883 0 14 541.2 429 1.44

Guess he was an “excellent prospect.” For the Whitecaps, followed by a 12-year Major League career!
Billy Wagner | Brewster 1992
1992 Whitecaps Yearbook said:

“This lefty will be a welcome addition to the Whitecaps pitching staff.”

1997 – 2008 Major League stats:
W L ERA G GS SV IP SO WHIP
47 40 2.31 853 0 422 903.0 1196 1.00

It appears he was a welcome addition to several Major League pitching staffs as well, for 16 seasons!

Sean Casey | Brewster 1994-95

1995 Whitecaps Yearbook said: “He led the nation’s Division 1 players with a
.469 average as well as hitting 14 home runs and 57 RBI’s, and had Major League
scouts flocking to Virginia.” (Sean played for the University of Richmond.)

2001 – 2011 Major League stats

AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPs
5066 690 1531 130 735 18 .302 .367 .814

And for good reason, the flock followed him to Brewster and beyond.
Not too many 10-year Major Leaguers with a lifetime batting average over .300.

Aaron Rowand | Brewster 1996-97
1997 Whitecaps Yearbook said:

“Aaron had an outstanding 1996 as a Whitecap. He hit .292 with 18 RBI’s,
4 home runs, a slugging percentage of .448 and 11 stolen bases.”

2001 – 2011 Major League stats:

AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
4374 613 1193 136 536 67 .273 .330 .765

Brewster was fortunate to have Aaron for two years; the Majors had him for 11.

Chase Utley | Brewster 1998
1998 Whitecaps Yearbook said: As a UCLA freshman “He ended

the regular season hitting .320 with 49 RBI’s, 15 home runs, and
a slugging percentage of .608.” Out of high school, “. . . he was selected

in the second round of the draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.”
2003 – 2017 Major League stats:

AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
6693 1085 1850 258 1011 151 .276 .359 .828

Drafted originally by the Dodgers, he spent 13 years with the Phillies, then went guess where?

Bobby Kielty | Brewster 1998
1999 Whitecaps Yearbook tribute said: “Voted the League’s
Most Valuable Player, he led the league in BA (.384), RBI’s (45) hits
(58), extra base hits (24), doubles (17), on-base percentage (.486),

slugging percentage (.629), and total bases (95).”
2001-2007 Major League stats:

AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
1792 257 456 53 253 21 .254 .348 .757

A true Cape League Cinderella story, Bobby went from unknown and undrafted to a professional contract
in nine weeks of what was arguably the finest season by any player in the history of the Cape Cod League.

Ryan Braun | Whitecaps 2004
2004 Whitecaps Yearbook said: “As a Miami freshman, Ryan was team

MVP and posted team highs in nearly every offensive category,
including 12 game-winning hits, a .364 BA, 17 home runs and 76 RBI.”

2007 – 2017 Major League stats:
AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
5629 937 1699 302 989 193 .302 .364 .905

Sometimes you can just tell when a guy is going to make it.

Yonder Alonso | Brewster 2007
2007 Whitecaps Yearbook said:

“Alonso was the eye of the (Miami) Hurricane offense in 2007.
He had 17 home runs, 66 RBI and a .701 slugging percentage.”

2010 – 2017 Major League stats:
AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
2554 293 685 67 306 22 .268 .340 .747

Apparently had his eye on a successful Major League career, which he is still experiencing.

Tyler Thornburg | Brewster 2009
2009 Whitecaps Yearbook said: “Thornburg led (Charleston Southern)
the team in home runs (12), runs (40), doubles (16) and was second in
hits with 62. A true two-way player, Tyler also chipped in a 4-4 record

as a relief pitcher, earning a 3.73 ERA and one save.”
2012 – 2017 Major League stats:

W L ERA G GS SV IP SO WHIP
14 9 2.87 144 10 13 219.2 220 1.19

Position player vs. pitcher – we think he made the right call! Interesting that Tyler
has a better career ERA in the Majors than he had in 2009 for Charleston Southern!

Aaron Judge | Brewster 2012
2012 Yearbook said:

“ . . . was drafted in 2010 by the Oakland A’s in the 30th round”

2017 Major League stats, when Judge was American
League Rookie of the Year and MVP runner-up:

AB R H HR RBI SB AVG OBP OPS
542 128 154 52 114 9 .284 .422 1.049

Makes you wonder: Who did all those teams pick in the first 29 rounds?
