PROLOGUE

The Government of India is responsible for ensuring the Defence of India. The Supreme 3/50 www.mod.nic.in
Command of the Armed Forces vests in the President of India. The responsibility for
Defence of the country rests with the Cabinet. This is discharged through the Ministry
of Defence, which provides the policy framework and wherewithal to the Armed Forces
to discharge their responsibilities for defence of the country.

The prime task of the Ministry of Defence is to prepare for Defence of the country by
providing required Infrastructure, adequate trained Manpower and Defence Equipment
and Platforms to the Armed Forces. During the last few months, the Ministry of
Defence and the Armed Forces have fast-tracked efforts to enhance defence
preparedness and the security of the Nation. This e-Book, the first of its kind, is being
launched to provide an easy and quick insight into the initiatives taken by the Ministry

A very severe cyclonic storm ‘Hudud’ swept
through the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and
Odisha wreaking havoc. The Armed Forces moved
in swiftly to provide relief and minimize the
effects of the cyclone.

Controlling MASSIVE FOREST fire

Prime forests near Vishakapatnam were engulfed
by forest fires in November 2014. IAF deployed
Four MI-17 V5 helicopters with Bambi Buckets
to douse the fire. Each of these buckets can carry
upto 3,500 liters of water. Nearly 1,00,000 liters
of water was sprinkled to put out the fire.

New initiatives are being taken in documentation
of history of war which include writing of the
history of the Indian Armed Forces, production
of documentaries on World War-I, World War-II,
1947-48 operations, Wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971
and the Kargil conflict of 1999. It is also proposed
to produce a full length feature film showcasing the
efforts and ethos of the Indian Armed Forces.

The Government has decided to build a National War
Memorial to honour Defence Forces’ personnel who
were martyred in wars after Independence in 1947. A
War Museum will also be constructed. ` 200 crore has
been allocated in the Defence Service Estimates for
the year 2014-15 for this purpose.
