Definitions
Novice: Beginners, students or hobbyists who have painted for less than three (3) years.
Senior Artist: Advanced students or hobbyists who are knowledgeable in the art and have
painted for more than three (3) years. They cannot be in a professional teacher’s
organization, have a resale license, or sell finished work on a regular basis.
Class 1- Decorative Painting/Tole Art: Tole painting was originally defined as painting on
tin. The current, broader definition is called decorative painting, and allows the use of any
surface such as wood, glass, porcelain, tin, stoneware, canvas, etc. It is an adverse art
form wherein it is an expression of color, subject matter and craftsmanship.
Class 2- Folk Art: Oil or acrylic – Folk Art is a style that reflects art forms from the Old
World, and requires skills and techniques that separate it from primitive art. It varies from
flowing scrolls to graceful florals.
Class 3- Rosemaling, Bauernmalerei & Stroke Work: Oil or acrylic – These are a type of
decoration made up of strokes and stylized flowers painted with blended colors and fine
outlines and/or liner work.
Class 4- Realistic: Oil or acrylic – Realistic Art is a style that represents things as they
really are. This type is a rendering of the precise details of things, scenes or florals.
Class 5- Primitive: Oil or acrylic – This style imitates the simplistic by either lacking details
or utilizing crude qualities like that of Early America.
Class 6- Whimsical: Oil or acrylic - Fun, cute, stylized or character pieces that don’t fit any
other classes.
Class 7- Fabric Painting: Oil, acrylic or fabric dyes – Fabric Painting must be rendered on
fabric. If painted on clothing please see Wearable Art Division 2310 in Clothing & Textiles.
Class 8- Water color: Water color will be judged on appearance, difficulty and originality
only.

Contest. This judging process ranks exhibitors against one another and gives one first, second and

Contest Rules
1. Decorate Trees – Tree decorating will be between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017 only,
no exceptions.
2. Return of Items – Tree decorations are to be removed on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 between 8
a.m. and 7 p.m., no exceptions.
3. ADULTS ONLY. Exhibitors limited to one entry only. Entries are accepted on a first come, first
served basis. Limited space available, so be sure to get your entry form in early. Exhibitors will be
notified via e-mail by May 23rd, if not sooner, if accepted.
4. Artificial Christmas trees that are four feet tall will be provided.
5. Miniature and small (UL approved) decorative lights must be used on all trees. Fair will provide
extension cords for display purposes only. Exhibitor to provide extension cord for decorating on
Saturday, June 3.
6. Handmade Decorations: Ornaments, decorations and tree skirt must be 75% handmade by exhibitor.

Wearable Art

Wearable Art is the making of individually designed pieces of usually hand-made
clothing as artistic expressions from metal, beads, found material or adding
unique and stylish touches or dying and/or painting virgin fabric. A few artists
make their own fabrics, for example, on looms. Exhibitor must have created at
least 75% of the finished item.
Class includes, but is not limited to, quilted items, needle felting, hand dyed, hand
painted, recycled, etc.

Free Motion Machine
Embroidery
Division 2311
This is a free motion technique involving the use of a sewing machine used
as a creative tool, without the aid of the feed dogs or pressure feet. It
includes the darning foot when used in conjunction with free motion. All
judging will be limited to yarns, threads or other types of string that can be
applied through the eye of a sewing machine needle, with a sewing
machine needle or on the bobbin using the free motion technique. Any
embellishment that requires application by hand without concurrent use of
the sewing machine needle and the absence of the feed dogs will not be
judged in this category and therefore will bear no influence on the decision
of the judges. Free motion use of automatic stitches that are a built-in
function of the sewing machine are accepted as long as the use of the
pressure foot and feed dogs are not employed. The term “sewing machine
as a creative tool” refers only to domestic sewing machines. The term
excludes all commercial sewing and monogramming machines.
Special Rules:
Very small items must be mounted on a sturdy background.
Pillows must be stuffed or use a pillow form.
All hanging articles must be ready for hanging.
Garments must be clean and completely finished.
All quilts and rugs must be completed and ready for use.

-Reference photo: This should be a clear photo/screenshot/etc. that shows the original
source material the costume is based on.
-High-resolution photo of completed costume either worn or displayed, this should be
the best representation of your finished costume.
Class 2 - Original design
-Sketch/concept/inspiration: We love original designs, please show us how you came up
with the idea for your design by submitting a sketch, description, or inspiration board.
You may include a brief description along with any images.
-High-resolution photo of completed costume either worn or displayed, this should be
the best representation of your finished costume.
If desired, entrants may also submit work in progress photos, details about techniques
used, design elements, details etc., anything you feel the judges may be interested in
knowing about the way you made your costume.
Judging Criteria
-Costumes should be your own original construction, if your costume includes items that
are store bought those items must show significant modification (does not include
footwear/jewelry).
-Contestants will be judged on the following criteria:
-Craftsmanship: Construction and presentation are important, judges will award points
for neatness, skill, artistry, and handiwork.
-Creativity: Innovative use of materials is an essential part of cosplay; judges will be
looking for thoughtful and inventive techniques.
-Use of materials: Judges will be paying close attention to fabrics and materials used in
each costume. Are they appropriate for the type of garment/application? Do they
portray the original concept in the final garment?
In addition, if your costume is a re-creation:
-Accuracy: How well did the contestant translate the source material into a real-life
costume? Judges will be referencing submitted reference photos for each entry.

AWARDS
Based upon the Group or Danish judging system, Best in Show & all
1st places will be awarded a CGW Membership. Additional awards of Costume College
scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee.
RULES
Entry must have been completed since July 1st, 2016 Note that completion date
does not affect the start date of an item.
Each entrant may only submit one costume for the Costumer’s Guild West
Authentic Costume Division.
If the judges feel that a costume has been entered in the wrong category, they
reserve the right to move it to a more appropriate category.
All entries must include the following documentation, which will not be returned.
Any entry without required documentation may be disqualified
A 4x6 or 8x10 photo of the costume being worn, including all accessories.
An essay describing the character, inspiration, or historical context of the
costume.
Optional additional documentation can include design elements,
description of techniques used, photos of construction in progress,
photos of finished costume in use, and anything you’d like to bring to the
judge’s attention.
Class 1 – Original or Reproduction Science Fiction/Fantasy/Anime/Manga/Video Game
Class 2 – Theatrical: Costumes designed for the stage or screen. Documentation should explain any technique that is
specific to distance or film viewing.
Class 3 - Historical Interpretation: Fabrics and sewing techniques need not be historically accurate, but should attempt to
look historical, creating the “effect” of the historical period, rather than reproducing an authentic garment.
Class 4- Historical Reproduction (garment that could have been worn in chosen period): Fabrics must be as historically
accurate as possible with available modern textiles. Visible (both inside and
outside) sewing and finishing techniques must be historically accurate, but hand-sewing the
complete garment is not required. Historical under-
garments required to create the accurate historical look should be noted in
documentation or included with entry.

Make a soft animal, doll or teddy bear which will become the property of LACF, and will
be distributed to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. For over 15 years, the LA
County Fair has donated “friends” to the Pomona Valley Hospital. Through the
hospital’s Social Services Program, pediatric surgical patients are united with a new
“friend” (stuffed animal, doll or toy) to help them through difficult times. Sharing your
talents and providing a child with a smile is truly a gift from your heart, as these
programs are fully dependent on donations from the public.

Definitions of Techniques
COUNTED THREAD: A term for embroidery worked on an even-weave fabric
whose threads can be counted.
COUNTED CROSS STITCH: Cross stitches worked on an even-weave fabric. Cross
stitch may be done with many stitches, but generally are counted.
BLACKWORK: Small geometric pattern usually worked in black thread on even-weave
fabric.
DRAWN FABRIC, PULLED THREAD, PULLED WORK: Threads of fabric are pulled
aside or removed, leaving holes that form a pattern.
HARDANGER: A Norwegian embroidery technique, worked on even-weave fabric
which may include linen, cotton or mixed fiber known as hardanger. It consists of
rectangular groups of satin stitches, known as “kloster” and blocks arranged in patterns
of squares and rectangles to outline the cut spaces.
NEEDLEPOINT: A canvas embroidery or canvas work. Embroidery worked on a
canvas background, whose stitches usually cover the entire surface and are usually, but
not always, worked in wool.
PETIT POINT: Needlepoint that is 18 or more stitches per inch.
STITCHERY: Fabric embroidery, a term for embroidery worked on non-countable fabric.
CREWEL EMBROIDERY: Any embroidery worked with Crewel Wool usually on a plain
weave linen background; however other uncounted fabrics can be used.
STAMPED FABRIC EMBROIDERY: A term for fabric that is pre-stamped with a design
and then embroidered.

Entry Rules
1. Entry form must be legible and complete with fees in order to be accepted.
2. There are no refunds of entry fee. See competition or contest for individual entry fee.
3. Receipt of entry form will not be acknowledged, except for contests. Please include
entry fee with the entry form. Entry forms received without the entry fee will be returned.
4. You must be 18 years or older to enter, unless otherwise stated.
5. If exhibitors are under 18 and would like to enter their DIY projects at the fair, visit
www.lacf.com/competitions for information on America’s Kids Competitions.
6. Entries accepted from INDIVIDUALS ONLY, unless otherwise stated.
7. All articles entered must be the handiwork of the exhibitor. If, in the opinion of
management, an article had previously been entered, the Fair reserves the right to
withhold the item from judging and display. Items can only be entered in the LA County
Fair once.
8. Only items listed and described on the entry form will be accepted for judging.
9. Delivery of all entries is on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only. If you are
unable to drop off your entry at this time you may send someone in your place or mail
your item via UPS. All mailed entries must arrive by 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2017.
10. Fairplex will not be responsible for returning display hardware i.e. hangers, jewelry
stands etc.
11. Articles that are stained or soiled or articles showing obvious signs of wear or use will
be disqualified. Fair reserves the right to reject any exhibit or entry, if there is anything
objectionable, unsuitable, or requires more space than can be given, or is in conflict with
exhibit requirements.
12. All articles must not exceed 25 pounds, have sturdy hardware and be ready to hang.
Articles designed for hanging that are not so-equipped will be displayed in a manner
deemed appropriate by the Fair.
13. In classes calling for “any, specify” or “other than listed, specify” be sure to indicate on
the entry form the type of item being entered.
14. Identification tags will be issued for all items entered and exhibitors will be given a claim
check for each item.
15. Fairplex will not be liable for any entry.
16. Pick up of all entries is on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. only.
If you are unable to pick up your entry at this time you may send someone in your place.
Claim checks are required. If entries are not picked up then they will be donated to
charity.
17. No person shall be an exhibitor or sign the entry form as an agent at the LA County Fair
in any department if they are a manager, director, association member, department
head, or paid employee.
18. The Los Angeles County Fair Association reserves the right to amend and add to these
rules and empowers the Executive Committee with the final and absolute right to
interpret all rules and regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine all matters,
questions and differences in regard thereto.
19. The LA County Fair pays premiums ONLY in those divisions and/or classes specifically
listed. Premium checks will be mailed within six (6) weeks following the close of the LA
County Fair. The LA County Fair is not responsible for redemption of premiums.
20. Any exhibitor who wins over $600.00 dollars or more in premiums or prizes must
complete a W-9 form before checks are distributed in compliance with IRS regulations.
A 1099 MISC will be issued to those exhibitors.
21. UPS RETURN INFORMATION:
a. Exhibitors who send articles to the Fair and wish to have them returned via UPS
must enclose a check for $20.00 with their entry form and indicate that it is for a UPS
return.
b. Articles will be returned by October 31, 2017.
c. Breakable, fragile or extremely heavy articles will NOT be returned by UPS; such
items MUST be picked up.
d. Size of the item must not exceed 130 inches in length and girth combined.
e. Proper packaging materials MUST accompany all exhibits that are to be shipped
back.
