round. Visit a real historic fire lookout tower and learn firsthand what it was like to use the Osborne fire finder to
spot a fire. In the center of it all, meet two of America’s Living Legends; a live wild horse and burro from the
Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. Visit the special area created by the

JURASSIC PLANET

The Adventure Continues…

The once fierce dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era, thought to be extinct long ago, have found a new home at the LA
County Fair. Through careful examination and study, our resident paleontologists have learned how to take what
they know of life forms existing in former geologic periods and incorporate their knowledge to adapt our dinosaurs
to life in the New World.

The sudden emergence of these non-extinct creatures has enabled our experts to create a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for a new generation to learn about dinosaurs. To capitalize on this amazing discovery, our
paleontologists have decided to share their findings with the world by creating a unique attraction where guests can
come face to face with giant dinosaurs. Through hands on experiences, interactive attractions, and unique displays,
people of the 21st century now have the unique opportunity to experience something most experts were convinced
would never happen again…living with dinosaurs! Something once thought impossible has now become reality.

Once feared by mankind, our dinosaurs have become domesticated in the New World, and seem quite content to
forage in the outdoor gardens, stretch themselves in the sun, and live among the once hated humans. As a result of
this new dynamic between man and beast, the Jurassic Planet experience allows our guests to experience a thrilling

combination of meaningful hands -on activities and a walking tour through a prehistoric zoo of formerly extinct
dinosaurs.

Of course, they are still wild animals in the deepest sense of the word, so visitors must proceed with caution and
refrain from taunting or upsetting these amazing creatures. Follow the rules and demonstrate good behavior at all
times, as we cannot be held responsible for what danger may occur if you stray off the path or try to touch one of
these majestic animals. Enter at your own risk…

Learn all about the Spinosaurus, Carnotaurus, Iguanodon, Dilophosaurus and many more of these fascinating
creatures as you encounter them along your journey through Jurassic Planet.

There are more than 40 animated Dinosaurs (some reaching at over 14 feet tall!) with special effects, fantastic
lighting at night, hands-on, interactive activities, live animals, paleontologists, stage shows and more.

Interactive/Hands-on Experiences

Participate in a field tent experience that is dressed in an Indiana Jones -style 1930 motif where you can learn

an alarm. Check out an interactive game based on an antique truck loaded up for an expedition. Visit the
“dinosaur dig” areas where you can see realistic embedded dinosaur bones. And take part in a high -tech “look
inside the rock” interactive activity where guests “see” fossils inside rocks via a Pepper’s Ghost illusion and learn
about the newest non-invasive technology to reveal fossils without damaging specimens.

THE MILLARD SHEETS ART CENTER

The annual Art Classic at the Millard Sheets Art Center presents One Path Two Journeys - Judithe Hernández and Patssi
Valdez. The Millard Sheets Art Center is proud to announce that it ha s been selected to participate in Pacific Standard
Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles.
Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA takes p lace from September 2017
through January 2018 at more than 60 cultural institutions across Southern California, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs,
and from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty.

Los Four and Asco were two ground-breaking Los Angeles artist collectives speaking out for Mexican-American civil
rights in the 1970s and early 1980s. Their work validated ethnic and cultural practices and campaigned against
discrimination, racism, and exploitation. Their unique public art and bi -cultural style brought Chicano art to the
attention of the mainstream art world. LACMA mounted a major Los Four exhibition in 1974, recognizing the
importance of Chicano Art as a unique school of American art.

When Judithe Hernández (b 1948) joined Los Four and Patssi Valdez (b 1951) co-founded Asco, they were the only
women included in artist groups of that time. Hernández is well -known for her work as a muralist in LA between 1969
and 1982, and is credited with creating some of the earliest feminist work about women’s labor and migrants. Valdez
became known for her avant-garde performance art, installations and photography. Though politically aligned with
their male counterparts during this time of civil disobedience, their work also questioned issues of inequality specific to
Chicana women, such as their assigned role in the home.

Valdez reinvented herself as a painter and both artists went on to enjoy successful solo careers, exhibiting in the United
States, Latin America and Europe and appearing in both private and public collections. Their mature bodies of work place
Hernández and Valdez firmly among the finest Latina artists of their generation. “They have repeatedly pushed beyond
proscribed limits of society and culture to create art of enormous power in voices that are uniquely their own,” said
curator Lugene Whitley. “It’s wonderful to bring these two artists together for the first time in an exhibition. They both
grew up in East Los Angeles, received degrees at Oti s Art Institute, and shared similar political agendas around race and
gender during the civil rights movement, but their paths seldom crossed.”
One Path Two Journeys will present a visual dialogue of their recent and new works, including a collaborative
installation. Whether through the brilliant colors and patterns of movement in the work of Valdez or the richly
representative pastels of Hernández, visitors will experience the powerful, personal, defiant and intimate in the
aesthetic evolution of these two artists.

Dozens of interactive displays and stations offer a huge variety of challenges and experiences and makes science and
learning so much fun, that friends and families will have trouble tearing themselves away from this amazing exhibit.

Following is a list of the displays and how they fit into STEM and/or STEAM. At the end of each title, there are initials
designating which category the displays represents.

Rube Goldberg/Kinetic Sculpture (STEA):

This machine get its energy from the balls, which each contain plenty of potential energy at the top of the track.
Every time you hear a chime or other sound inside the machine, some potential energy has been converted to
sound energy. When pendulums start swinging or objects are moved, you know that some energy has been
converted to mechanical energy. At one point a ball drops several feet, bounces off a steel plate, and then flies
through the air into a basket. Here, you have witnessed the ball’s potential energy being dramatically converted
to the kinetic energy of motion. When the ball hits the steel plate, you hear sound energy being produced, and
are unaware of the best energy (friction) being produced. As the ball shoots back into the air, its kinetic energy is
converted once again into potential energy.

Dragon’s Lair/Spinning Tunnel (STEA):

The engineering and art in this incredible dragon and spinning tunnel illustrates optical illusion which is achieved
with the 20 foot spinning tube and ultraviolet lights. Even though you are walking on a nonmoving walkway, your
brain “reads” your surroundings and sends a message telling you that you are spinning. The illusion causes many
to walk in a tilted/leaning fashion.

Dexterity Testers (STE):

We use our hands to play flamenco guitar, crochet a sweater, and grip a baseball. Research says that one
rapidly mutating genetic sequence may be part of the key to our tool-wielding prowess, upright gait, and more.
The changing sequence, HACNS1, is present and stable in many vertebrate species. Give your hand(s) a try and
see if you can maneuver the rod from one end to the other end without setting off the buzzer.

Hatchet/Balance Beam (STE):

Your body has many ways to help you stay balanced. One of the most important ways is with the help of our
inner ear. A fluid in your ear brushes against very tiny hairs as you move your body around. Your brain keeps
track of this motion and uses the information to figure out what position your body is in. You can trick your brain
by spinning in circles for several seconds. When you stop spinning, this fluid continues to spin for a few
moments, and your brain thinks that you are still spinning. This strange sensation is called being “dizzy.”

Captured Lightning/Plasma Spheres (STEA):

Farmers will tell you that lightning is never welcome around their crops. However , lightning is actually very
important to farmers if they want their crops to grow well. When lightning flashes across the sky, it ionizes the
air and produces nitrogen oxide which is a very important fertilizer. Almost 50% of the useable nitrogen in our
environment comes from lightning. The lightning in these spheres is made of pure electricity, just like real
lightning. As the electricity leaps through the gas inside the spheres, it causes it to glow. This allows you to see
each path that the electricity takes. The electricity constantly hunts for the easiest path back to the earth. When
you place your hand on the glass, your skin provides this path. The electricity will leap to your hand and flow
silently down to the earth.

Cannon/Bernoulli Blower (STEAM):

Try moving the air stream to a sharp angle without causing the ball to fall down. Did you notice that the ball
seems to follow the air stream no matter what direction it moves? Also, did you notice that when the air stream is
at a steep angle, the ball seems to sit under the stream of air? That’s because the ball is being held in place by
the “Bernoulli effect” which is named after the scientist who discovered it. Bernoulli figured out that fast moving

air will “suck” things toward it. The ball in this display is being held up in the air because it is being “sucked”
towards the fast moving air coming from the blower. Bernoulli figured out that this is what makes birds and
airplanes fly. The curved top of a wing causes air to move very rapidly as it passes over the surface. This fast
moving air causes the wing to be “sucked” upward.

Who’s the Fairest of Them All/Morphing Mirror (STEA):

This looks like an ordinary mirror. However, adjust the light and have someone sit across from you and your
facial features morph. Two-way mirrors are used in showrooms and buildings for surveillance purposes. Two-way
mirrors are also used to create an Infinity Light effect.

Puzzle Stations (SM):

The object of these five and six piece large 3D puzzles is to make a circle, square, or cube. This involves
symmetry, the exact mathematical “patterned self-similarity.” This is achieved through geometric transformations
using scaling, reflection, and rotation. It is a challenge in three-dimensional thinking and logical deduction.

Nail Wall (SEAM):

The principals of mathematical topography are illustrated in a three-dimensional way with an enormous wall of
nails. Kids can create a topographical map of their hand, body, face, or an object they may be carrying (cup, hat,
purs e).

Target & Arrow/Hang Time (STEA):

Science was used in creating this one-of-kind display using technology and engineering to test a person’s physical
stamina. And, to add to the fun, the “overall time” is reset every day to see whose time is the best/longest.

Common Scents/Pete the Dragon (S):

Your nose has the amazing ability to detect tiny traces of molecules in the air around you. It then sends this
information to your brain which causes you to “experience” a smell or aroma. Your brain uses smell to help you
“see” things which the eye can’t. For example, you can detect danger such as fire, sources of food, the presence of
water, and much more. Your sense of smell also allows you to taste your food. A simple smell will often
trigger long forgotten memories. It can even trigger strong emotional responses such as excitement, loving
feelings, or even sadness.

Music Section

What does STEAM and music have in common? In 2009, The NSF (National Science Foundation) explored the answer
to Music Instinct: Science & Song. Experts in the field of neuroscience, psychology, biology, physiology, physics, and
education worked alongside musicians to unravel the mysteries of music and to help scientists understand music:
it’s basic structure, it’s biological, emotional and psychological effect on humans and the brain, and it’s healing and
altering potential. Music helps scientists understand complex functions of the brain and opens up treatments for
patients who are recovering from strokes or suffering with Parkinson's. Research even suggests that music may alter
the structure of the brain.

Helmets/Percussion Station (STE):

Tap each drum pad and see what happens. How does the computer know when you tap each pad? Beneath the
surface of each pad is a mineral known as “quartz.” If you tap or hit quartz, it produces a small amount of
electricity. The harder you tap, the more electricity is produced. The computer senses this electricity and
responds by creating various sound effects. This unusual property of quartz is used in a lot of devices around
you. Musical birthday cards and computers use this effect to play a tune or make other sounds. Quartz can also be
used to sense small vibrations such as earthquakes or someone trying to break glass to get into a building.

Sound Wall (STM):

Light, electrical sensors, and you (your body, hand, arm, foot, or leg) come together to turn your dance into a
musical note or song.

Barrels/Steel Drums (STM):

Sound, dexterity, quickness, knowledge, and memory are used as you play a note or sequence of notes to tap out
a song.

GARDEN RAILROAD

The First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was built in the 1860s, linking the well -developed railway
network of the Eastern coast with rapidly growing California. Did you know that our miniature railroad has been a
Fair exhibit since 1924 and tell s the story of how the trains helped to form the great state of California?

The miniature railroad began as a simple diorama at the 1924 Los Angeles County Fair and was intended to provide
public awareness and interest in the development of the Puddingstone Reservoir and Recreation Area. The Pacific
Electric Railway was also interested in the public’s reaction and the potential of a passenger trolley schedule from Los
Angeles to the Pomona area on weekends.

First established in 1924 and moved to its present location in 1935, it was a unique example of craftsmanship
utilizing hand-made replicas of real railroad operating equipment, much of which were built by local high school
students. Now this attraction, which has more than 30 individual operations running at one time, is maintained and
operated by year-round dedicated volunteers and is one of the largest public garden railroads in the U.S. with over
10,000 feet of operating track! The various trains and trolleys operate past several scenes depicting California
history from the 1850s to present day, and wander through the mountains, over the lakes and streams, and through
the gardens.

The Fairplex Garden Rai lroad has been featured on Public Broadcasting System (PBS) television and in the hobby
magazine Garden Railways, as well as many international publications in England and Europe.
