Rabbi’s Discretionary

Fund Report

Between November 1, 2016 and August 25, 2017
the discretionary fund received $53,534.00, and
distributed $50,559.00. This includes over $15,000.00
in Purim donations and direct gifts.

While I can say we have had a successful year and
we are blessed to have a generous community, there
are many who are in dire need - who have great
difficulty surviving month to month, affording basic
food, rent or medical needs. The graph above reflects
the distribution proportions. Please note that rent
subsidies allocation is one of many vehicles in our
community that addresses those needs. Tikva
Housing, JFSA, Hebrew Free Loan Association and
others also assist with housing needs of the income
challenged. We regularly partner with all of the above
institutions to best support the needs of beneficiaries.

In recent years we have made several changes to
our policies to ensure that we best meet the needs
of individuals in our local community. Therefore,
national and Israeli causes are generally not supported
by this fund. Distributions to individuals are almost
always below $1000, and are mostly below $500. I am
grateful for the generous support of the congregation
and donors who provide the critical funds to allow
for the good work of the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund.

Memorial Service

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2017

This year Schara Tzedeck Cemetery and the Vancouver Holocaust and Education Society will host a
combined Memorial service Sunday, September 24, for all groups previously remembered in separate
ceremonies: those buried in Schara Tzedeck Cemetery, the martyrs and survivors of the Holocaust,
Fallen Veterans of Canadian Forces, and Fallen Veterans of the IDF. This change to combine services
was made to economize time and to attract as many people to a single, time efficient ceremony.
There will be two services Sunday, September 24, 2017 – this first will be 10:00 am at the Mountain
View Cemetery, 33rd Ave and Fraser St.; the second will be 11:00 am in the Schara Tzedeck Chapel
in New Westminster.

A Fond Farewell

It is with pleasure and sadness that I write a
few farewell words to my colleague and friend
Gila Ross. As the chair of the Youth Committee,
I have supported Gila with planning, executing,
and evaluating the youth programmes at our
Shul. Gila was a true innovator in this area.
She was constantly thinking ahead, creating
opportunities, and problem solving to ensure
the success of our child and youth programes.
Gila led our Youth Committee with enthusiasm
and coaxed and encouraged us, all the while
doing so in her gentle and humble way. Gila and
Rabbi Ross related to the youth with uncanny
ease... and this was the recipe for their success.
It was their relationships with youth and adults
alike that made the difference.
I have no doubt that both Rabbi and Gila Ross will continue to enhance the lives of those they meet with
their love of Judaism and their passion to inspire youth and adults alike. We were blessed to have you
in our community.

Schara Tzedeck Friends in Israel

BY ELIZABETH NIDER
This morning I looked out the window. The birds were chirping, the wind was rustling the leaves, the flowers
were in full bloom. The air conditioner hummed gently in the background. Jeff was at Shul, and the kids were
sleeping. I turned on the kum-kum, and thought to myself “one month”. One month since we made the most
significant decision of our life, and so far it is not what I expected.
I expected to feel part of something greater, to feel like I belong. I expected my kids to make friends, and for
our family to feel supported by our neighbours. I expected to be amazed at how everything is kosher. I can’t
properly describe what we feel. The simple description is that we are home. Truly home, in all sense of the
word. It is not about feeling that we belong, but rather that we have returned to where we should have been
all along- as if something was missing until this point and we were unaware. Baruch Hashem our children
have made so many friends that our home is always noisy with laughter (and sometimes yelling and arguing).
It is not just our neighbours that support us, but complete strangers genuinely want to help in any way they
can. What is amazing about the stores is not that they are kosher, but that they follow my schedule. The schedule
of the Jewish nation. The stores run out of swiss cheese before Tisha B’Av because the delivery date was
changed because of the fast day. On Friday, restaurants turn into Shabbat take-out sites because everyone
celebrates Shabbat. I don’t mean everyone keeps Shabbat the same way, I mean everyone celebrates Shabbat.
The dryer delivery guy that speaks only Russian and Hebrew wishes you Shabbat Shalom on Thursday afternoon.
We are home, and it is the best feeling I have ever had.
Before we got here, we could think of endless reasons
why it’s not a good idea to move to Israel. We don’t
speak Hebrew well. The culture is different. Our families
and friends are in Vancouver. Our kids have to make
new friends. How will we find jobs? What if we hate it?
These concerns are valid, and are excellent reasons why
not to move to any country – except Eretz Yisrael. We
realized after living in the Jewish homeland for 1 month
that all of our concerns may still exist, but they cannot
oppose the fundamental fact that we belong in Israel.
We are so grateful to have come from Vancouver –
where Rabbi Rosenblatt gave us guidance, and supported
our decision to make Aliyah. Thank you Rabbi Rosenblatt
and the Vancouver community.

Bar & Bat Mitzvah Program

Begins Monday, September 25, 2017

FOR ALL PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO WILL CELEBRATE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF

BAR OR BAT MITZVAH IN THE FALL OF 2018 - 2019, THIS IS A MUST READ

o We meet every second Monday evening (twice a month) for a parent-child class.
o We discuss issues essential to being a mature and responsible member of the Jewish community.
o The topics we explore are not necessarily covered in the day school curricula.
o Five experiential projects are part of this class.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS:
o Why start the year before my child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah?
It is important to for our B’nai Mitzvah to invest in the group and participate for an entire year. Often
those who participate the year of their Bar or Bat Mitzvah terminate participation after the big event,
depleting the group and truncating their own education. For example, if one had a Bar Mitzvah in
January he would only participate for ½ a year.

o Why a Parent/Child Class?
The fundamental structure of Jewish education is the family unit. This class inspires family learning and
creates a basis for further family study.

o Who should attend?
Your child, one or both parents. Grandparents are also welcome.
We don’t feel very familiar with the service, how can we become more familiar?
We will have a special family instruction service to promote understanding of the service. We can also
help you to understand the services on a weekly basis by making an introduction to a member of our
community who is more familiar with the Tefilah.

16

o How do we get started?
Please make an appointment with Rabbi Rosenblatt who will explain the process and help you to
create an individualized set of goals and projects for your child’s achievement of Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

o How do I register?
Please call the Synagogue office 604-736-7607 to register for the class and reserve a date for the
celebration of this special event.
o I know what is involved in a Bar Mitzvah, but what can one do for a Bat Mitzvah?
There are many creative and exciting options for celebrating Bat Mitzvah, from Havadalah service to
a Bat Mitzvah Limud (a class given by the Bat Mitzvah student) to delivering a D’var Torah on Shabbat
Morning or all of the above. Please contact Rabbi Rosenblatt for more details on these opportunities.

o Who will teach my child?
The Klei Kodesh (clergy) of Schara Tzedeck will be happy to study with your child, please contact us
to arrange this.

o How many Aliyot can we have?
As there are many who come to Schara
Tzedeck every Shabbat to observe Yartzeit,
name a baby or celebrate an Aufruf,
we can only guarantee three aliyot in
addition to the Bar Mitzvah boy (we may
be able to give more). There are other
honors available such as Hagbah (lifting
the Torah) Gelilah (rolling the Torah)
and opening the Ark. We suggest that
you make a list of those you wish to honor
and list them in order of importance so
that we can best accommodate.

o How else can parents participate?
Parents can participate by reading the
Torah, Haftorah, or giving a D’var Torah.

Programming Report

LOOKING BACK – LOOKING FORWARD!
We are on a roll! Last year we had 14 large scale
events, with an average of 200 people at each event.
Over 2500 meals were served.
Our most successful event was the Rabbi Lord
Jonathan Sacks Lecture and Dinner. 480 people
attended the dinner and 700 people attended
Rabbi Lord Sacks’ lecture.
We hosted five Scholars in residence - Judge Danny
Butler in November, Dr. Yael Ziegler, in January,
Rabbi Leonard Matanky in February (sponsored
by Abe Sacks), Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks in April
and Rabbi Shalom Denbo in June.
We worked with three community organizations
as co-sponsors – Pacific Torah Institute, Canadian
Friends of Hebrew University and Jacs – the Jewish
Addiction Community Services.
We had two new initiatives – a ‘New Members’ wine
and cheese reception and a ‘Sushi and Games’ night.
Both were successful and we will be holding similar
programs again this year.
Ideas for the coming year include, monthly family
oriented Shabbat dinners, our always popular South
African Shabbat dinner in October, and we are
working with a seniors group to organize a lunch
with entertainment for early Fall. Other new
programs are in the works.
Our committee is an active committee and we welcome
anyone with new ideas for events and new committee
members. Special thanks to our Programming/
Education Committee members: Marlene Hershfield,
Tracy Ames, Ricki Thal and Ginaya Peters.

A special thank you goes to our youth committee, on programming and resources to inspire our

achievements this year. The youth committee is
to be congratulated for taking on the project of
upgrading the youth space and creating 3 beautiful
spaces for our youth that are used multiple times
a week. The committee worked hard to upgrade
the Shabbat morning kids program, offering the
kids an educational experience and parents an
opportunity to attend services. The Shabbat
program attracts more than 50 kids per week.
This year there was also a focus on family
programs on Shabbat and the holidays. These
events attracted and engaged well over 100 people.
