of her favorite places, Ruby Tuesday, and he was our waiter. Grandma knew,
Eric and Robin in a Wynmoor Art Class even before I did, that he liked me and that he was a good catch. We stayed
together through the rest of high school, but after graduation, I left Chicago
to attend the best college I could, all the way out in California. At 18, I was
naïve, stubborn, and convinced that we could sustain a cross-country relation-
ship for four years. Grandma was more skeptical, and again, she was right.
We broke up after only five weeks.

Grandma and Irv came out to visit me in California once. Grandma found
it unacceptable that I didn’t own an umbrella.

“Don’t worry,” I insisted. “It’s California. It
never rains here.”

It rained the next day, and Grandma got me
an umbrella.

She also got me a pair of tan suede shoes
that I absolutely loved, and I wore them that
night when I introduced my new boyfriend
to Grandma and Irv over dinner. This time,
though, the signs were not good. It was raining
again, Grandma didn’t like the food, and when
I asked Grandma what she thought of my new
love interest, I still remember her words: “He
doesn’t seem to know what he wants.”

If only I had listened to Grandma. I loved
that boy as much as I loved those tan suede
shoes, but he treated me poorly indeed. And
for the next three years, I went from Los An-
geles, to Portland, to Atlanta, to South Africa,
and just as I carried those tan suede shoes with
me, I also dragged along my heartbreak. The
shoes fell apart, and I patched them once with
duct tape and three times with Super Glue. I
just couldn’t let them go.

I didn’t throw them out until I graduated
college and moved to Philly for my first real
job. I loved being on my own and living in
the heart of the city. Then, late one night,
three years ago, in the middle of yet another
rainstorm, I met the man who is sitting next
to me, Eric, and the rest is history. I’m sure,
by this point in the story, you’re all dying to
know: what does Grandma say about Eric?
Well, Grandma has kindly welcomed him into
the family, sending him hats to make sure he
bundles up in Winter and, of course, inviting us
to Florida to visit. Since Grandma likes Eric, I
have a good feeling about him, too - after all,
Grandma knows best.

A True Floridian
Exhibit In The

Boca Raton
Art Museum

By Barry Isaac
This Winter, I returned to the Boca Raton
Museum of Art and I thoroughly enjoyed the
temporary “Imagining Florida And Myth In
The Sunshine State” exhibit. This exhibit
ends on March 24, 2019. At this exhibit, I
saw quality American paintings and other
works of art with Florida subject matter.
The paintings were primarily done in the
19th and 20th Centuries. Painters well-
represented at this exhibit included, George
Catlin, “Beautiful Savannah in Pine Woods,”
Charles Bird King, “Seminole Chief,”
George Forest de Brush, “Indians Hunting
Cranes,” Anthony Thieme, “Old France,
Saint Augustine,” impressive American
Impressionism, George Inness, “Early
Moonrise, Florida,” fine Tonalism, Frederick
Carl Frieseke, “Fishing, Jacksonville,”
Ernest Lawson, “Tropical Moss,” Ralston
Crawford, “Tampa to Saint Petersburg,” and
Milton Avery, “Florida Lake.”
At this exhibit, there were fine photographs
by Henri Cartier-Bresson, “Miami, Florida,”
Gordon Parks, “Bethune-Cookman College,
Home Economics Class,” Daniel Faust,
“Mermaid Theatre,” Bruce Mozert, and
Arthur Rothstein, “Migrant Florida Family,”
plus delightful mixed media creations by
Key West artist, Mario Sanchez.
As usual, I relished the following paintings
from their permanent collection once more;
Maurice de Vlaminck’s, “Village,” John
Marin’s “Sea and Boat,” Lawrence Gipe’s
“Burning Up With Ideas,” and Benny
Andrews’ “Female Nude,” among others.
Although the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s
collection of works on display is substantially
smaller than the large art museums in
Philadelphia, New York, Washington, and
Chicago, I still appreciate this art museum
and respect the fine ambience of this art
museum.

Wynmoor 2019
Short Film Festival
By Merri Goldberg
A new star has been added to our already excellent Fine Arts programs at
Wynmoor. On February 1st, the first Short Film Festival, sponsored by the
Wynmoor Video and Film Club, was presented. The films presented were
created by and often starred Wynmoor residents. Films ranged in time from
59 seconds to about 17 minutes. They included:
Dr. Geezer, Letter to God, Anger Management, Bargain Bagels  - Phil
Guterman, The Dress - Judy Bobker, Sock Monkey Stories, Abduction: A
Love Story - Marcus Wolf, Music of China, The Golden Swans, - Enid G.
Wolf-Schein, Half Wit, Feeding Frenzy - Mark Levy, and Wynmoor Dances
to Happy - Moriah Jordan.
Excitement for the event built as 175 tickets sold out almost immediately.
Dress was “up,” and residents got to show off some of their finery. The re-
ception afterwards was “fancy” with decorated tables, six kinds of popcorn
and varied wine choices, presented by resident sommeliers. New friends
were made at large tables, sing-a-longs to old film music, quizzes for prizes,
(Crackerjack) and dancing. High energy, a spirit of old fashion fun and gaiety
dominated the evening.

A few of the audience responses:
Fane Brenner: “I saw Enid in the Library selling tickets and she inspired
Arnold and myself to see my friends and buddies who have created innova-
tive films.”
Sherry Gliroy: “It was better than I thought it would be. It was warm, funny
and just made you glow.”
Richard Horn: “The film made me realize what a diverse community Wyn-
moor is. I loved it..”
Betty Stein: “It was a wonderful film evening. Lots of fun and very interest-
ing. One of my best evenings at Wynmoor... Congratulations and do it again!”
Kudos to the very hard-working Festival Team, including Enid Wolf-Schein,
Festival Director, Marcus Wolf, Master of Ceremonies, Patrick O’Brien, Pro-
jectionist, Tamara Tresniowski, Music Producer, Phil Forman, DJ, Michael
Brodie, Photographer, Rene Monblatt, Craft Services, and all of the many
others listed in the program.
Also, many thanks to Wynmoor Community Council President, Jackie
Railey and second Vice-President, Selma Bass and Recreation Staff, Lynne
O’Donnell, Kia Williams and Moriah Jordan.

My Tribute to Relay for a Much Longer Life

By Mark S. Wallach
My hat is off to the whole cancer team
For coming up with a wonderful scheme
The events are well planned and the shirts, as usual, are both creative

and bright
They provide real hope that at the end of the tunnel, victims will finally

see, some light!
There are so many events where you can celebrate galore
There’s the Showcase, golf, food and even - much more
And there are so many who volunteered for this fight
To help raise money, for others - in their fight
You can actually lessen your own strife
By participating in - The Relay for Life
Yellow, light blue and white are all the appropriate colors for me
So if you think positive, maybe you too - can soon be - cancer free!
We all hope that someday the cure for cancer will no longer seem

impossible
But miraculously it will become - almost possible!
If it is cancer that we can defeat
That would be one - amazing feat!
Hopefully that could also serve as an inspiration
Of what we can accomplish - as a nation!
Maybe all of our politicians will finally see the light
And stop trying to win some argument or a fight
And instead look for how we can all unite
Because that is the best way to do things right!
It is when we all band together that our country can be really strong
So that we can face and overcome all the problems that are so wrong!
We need to stop being motivated mostly by fear
But rather on solutions, that we all can cheer!
You can no longer afford to sit idly by
Because otherwise our planet - will surely die
Ask people if their comments and actions will help us unite
Or amplify our differences and produce yet - another fight
We can only have a better day
If each of us - lead the way!

Ladies’ Tennis Luncheon

By Mona Margolin
The Wynmoor Tennis Club is a place of good cheer

We hope it keeps growing from year to year
People come to kibbitz, and people come to play

From 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM on any given day
If you didn’t have enough, we’re there at night too
Maybe Monday, Tuesday or Thursday is the time for you
Bring your bandages, ice packs, knee braces and such
After all we’re not so young that we can’t use a crutch
We have parties and Tournaments at our Fountain of Youth
At a membership cost of $12 and that is the truth
Of course, you have to put up with some of our schtick
If you step out of bounds, you’ll learn mighty quick

We spoke to the Tennis Maven in the sky
To help the season go smoothly by

She gave us some pointers, we’d like to share
And left us some gifts with love and with care

It’s all meant in fun and not to insult
We hope you get a few laughs from our result

WYNMOOR
Golf and Tips

By Kevin Battersby, PGA

Leave The Flagstick In?

The USGA has revamped the “2019 Rules
of Golf” to be fairer and speed up the pace of
play. The most notable change, in my opinion,
is the choice to putt with the flagstick still in the
hole without penalty if your ball strikes the pin.

As golf becomes more and more a game of
science, putting experts have opined and re-
searched the advantages of leaving the flagstick in the hole or taking it out.
It seems from their research one would have a greater chance to make putts
while leaving the flagstick in the hole. Adam Scott feels it’s a mockery of
the way the game was intended to be played. Bryson Dechambeau, AKA
the scientist, has certainly embraced the new rule and odds are he has the
research to back it up.
Personally, I thought the intent of the rule was to speed play up which it
will. However, it is being utilized in a very different way. Strategizing the
odds of the ball striking the pin to your advantage doesn’t seem like the
intent nor spirit of the game. It will be interesting to see what the Master’s
committee does this year. They will have four months to observe the reaction
from the players and possibly the fans for the upcoming Masters at Augusta.
The PGA tour has a few rules such as the “Metal Spike Policy” and the
“One Ball Rule” that are for the tour professionals only. Some other new
rules such as repairing damage to the green like spike marks and no extra
penalty for double hits seem fairer in 2019.
“The Lost Ball Rule” is now only a three-
minute search instead of five minutes and
should improve the pace of play. There are
numerous other subtle changes to the rules
and definitions and in totality they make
the game a bit friendlier and more logical.
Consult the United States Golf Association
at USGA.org for a complete summary of
the rule’s changes.
