Area Dining

Clearwater has hundreds of restaurants offering a fascinat-
ing variety of tantalizing choices in diverse surroundings.
Fine dining to kid friendly, ethnic to vegetarian, bistros to
buffets, outdoor on the beach to elegantly lit interiors and
freshly caught seafood is a specialty at many restaurants.
Some Clearwater area restaurants even have their own fish-
ing fleets that engage in sustainable fishing practices to en-
sure future populations of ocean wildlife.

Family owned and operated as well as nationally branded
restaurants are prolific. If it is a snack you want – savory,
sweet or small plates are plentiful. Along the beach you
will also find many tempting ice cream and gelato shops
coupled with happy hours and sunset views to delight all.
The explosion of craft beer has hit the Clearwater Area in
a big way with many new and noteworthy beers that have
attracted a devoted following.

Don’t Leave Fido at Home!

Clearwater Welcomes
Your Four-Legged Friends

For many, the hardest part of leaving on vacation is saying “goodbye” to
our canine companions. So, don’t! After all, our four-legged friends are
important members of the family and it is absolutely understandable that
you would want to create special Sunshine State memories with them.

Fortunately, Clearwater Beach is filled with pet-friendly hotels and restau-
rants that not only embrace dogs but also provide special paw-some
treats. In keeping with its tradition for showering its guests with luxurious
accommodations and savory meals served in sophisticated settings, The
Opal Sands Resort at 430 S. Gulfview Blvd. and The Sandpearl Resort
at 500 Mandalay Avenue on Clearwater Beach also offer a program for
your pets. Upon arrival, Fido receives his own bed, bowl, biscuits, and
fresh breath dental chews. And, when it’s time to take him for a walk, be
sure to bring along the complementary waste pick-up bags!

Located across the street from the city park, Camelot Resorts, 603 N.
Mandalay Avenue, warmly opens its doors to pets. During his stay Fido
will have access to special dog treats, chew toys, balls and frisbees for
family fun. Extra dog leashes are also available.

A few minutes away from the Gulf’s beaches, La Quinta Inn - Clearwater
Central, 21338 US Highway 19 North, and The Candlewood Suites,
13231 49th St North, located only minutes away from the beaches, asks
that guests call the property directly after making a reservation online to
let them know that Fido will be joining the family.

Dining al fresco is the way we do it in Clearwater and Fido, of course,
is invited to the table. (Well, not quite literally...although sneaking a
few snippets of your scrumptious dish to the “good boy” under the ta-
ble will certainly not be frowned upon!) All breeds are welcome at The
Brown Boxer Bar and Grill in Clearwater and Madeira Beach. Be sure to
also visit Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber, a local restaurant that garnered
Clearwater Chamber of Commerce’s Medium Size Business Award this
year. You’re also invited to enjoy spectacular views with Fido at your
feet. Some popular outdoor patios can be found at Cooters, Jimmy’s

Fish House & Iguana Bar, Hooters of Clearwater, Frenchy’s and Crabby
Bill’s. Known for their abundance of fresh-from-the-Gulf seafood, sizzling
steaks and dazzling desserts, Fido may even be lucky enough to snag a
doggie-bag to take home.

Had enough of the sun and sea? Head over the Causeway to Downtown
Clearwater and sample Clear Sky Cafe’s tasty fare. Owner Dan Shouvlin
and Chef Bobby Shirley are committed to helping the Clearwater com-
munity by supporting several local non-profit organizations, including
Loving Pet Care. Now that’s something to bark about!

Is Fido ready for some exercise? Take a walk down Mandalay Drive and
enjoy the sights and shopping. There are also plenty of parks and lush
green spaces throughout the area where he will enjoy a run and a rigor-
ous game of fetch. For some off-leash play, there are plenty of dog parks
nearby that offer shady trees and water spigots. Be sure to plan a visit
to Crestlake Dog Park 201 S. Glenwood Ave; Sandkey Dog Park, 2060
Gulf Blvd., and Enterprise Dog Park, 2671 Enterprise Rd. Although dogs
are not permitted to walk or swim on Clearwater Beach, Honeymoon
Island in Dunedin offers a dedicated beach for canines. There’s a beau-
tiful strip of sandy beach, natural trees and shrubbery and, of course,
the Gulf of Mexico’s warm waters that are suitable for a doggie-paddling
with your pets. Wade in the waters or swim side by side in the surf. For
your convenience, hoses and showers are available in the parking lot.

The First Annual Howl-O-Ween for Dogs will take place on Saturday,
Oct. 6, 11 am to 2 pm, at East Lake Woodlands Country Club, 1055
East Lake Woodlands Parkway, Oldsmar. Enjoy music, games, Hallow-
een photos, raffles and a silent auction. There will also be “Tricks for
Treats” and a costume contest for dogs. Rescue organizations will have
dogs available for adoption

CLEARWATER BEACH LIFEGUARDS

Insiders Feature
In addition to it’s World-renowned sugar
sand and eclectic mix of dining and at-
tractions, one of signature reasons that
Clearwater Beach was rated #1 in the
Patrick Brafford U.S. by visitors on TripAdvisor, is it’s safe

Head Lifeguard access to family fun along our beaches.
So we caught up with Patrick Brafford, Head Lifeguard with
close to 20 years of experience. Patrick leads a team of
40+ lifeguards that work 365 days a year to ensure your
Clearwater Beach vacation is a safe and memorable one.
In fact, Clearwater Beach offers the only year-round life-
guard operation in Pinellas County.

Why do you think that Clearwater Beach is named the #1
Beach in America on TripAdvisor?
It’s the mix of things here – Every time you cross the Me-
morial Causeway bridge you can see how much the city
values Clearwater Beach with the beautiful landscaping,
sidewalks that create a walkable beach for pedestrians and
the daily raking and grooming of our famous sugar sand
365 days a year. We are one of the only beaches in the re-
gion that does this. The Mayor and City Council also places
a strong emphasis on public safety which allows for us to
put lifeguards on the beach year-round, and I believe that’s
another reason visitors love our beach. I think there is just a
variety for everyone offered here.

What advice would you give to beachgoers to ensure they
have a great day at the beach?

1. Swim near a lifeguard –I can’t stress that enough. The
most experienced swimmers can sometimes get into
trouble in the water, so it’s important you are always
in the line of sight of a lifeguard so if you need help,
it’s there.

2. P lan for your day – Hydrate, pack snacks and plenty of
sunscreen and always make sure to protect your valu-
ables when you leave them on the beach to go into the
water. Another thing people sometimes forget is their
medication. You should always have that on you even
when you are enjoying the beach.

3. T he first thing you should always do when you arrive
at the beach is check to see what flags are flying, read
the status board on towers and if you can, talk with a
lifeguard and ask about water conditions.

29

4. A lways have a plan in place if the weather changes.
During the summer especially, weather can change
in an instant and create dangerous conditions on the
beach.

5. Know where other members of your party are –Chil-
dren having a great time playing in the ocean can tend
to wander and it’s easy to lose sight quickly. Deter-
mine a meeting point prior to separating or encourage
your children to find a lifeguard if they cannot find you.

Tell me about some of the conditions that are unique to our
area that may be different than other beaches that they
have visited.

1. T ampa Bay has a high rate of lightning activity so
when threats present themselves, you will see double
red flags on the lifeguard towers. For your safety, pay
attention to those flags and lifeguards and do not enter
the water and stay off of the beaches. Seek Shelter

2. R ough surf and on shore winds can cause rip currents
to form at anytime which is one reason I always stress
to swim near a lifeguard. Rip currents can overpower
even the most experienced swimmers. A good piece
of advice before entering the water is to learn about
rip currents, how to identify them and what to do if you
find yourself caught in one.

3. Stingrays – gentle in nature, these animals rest along
the sand in shallow water. If stepped on, they often
react quickly by lashing their tail, possibly injuring you
which can be painful. Shuffle your feet along the sand
as you enter the shallow water to ensure you don’t step
on one.

Downtown Clearwater

When you’re ready to come in from the sun and chill with a glass of Pinot
Grigio, you won’t have far to go. Downtown Clearwater is buzzing with
fine dining and a robust nightlife. Casual meals also abound as food trucks
frequently line the streets. We have outdoor festivals, iconic performing arts
venues, public arts programs and access to the county’s Pinellas Trail. And,
of course, Clearwater’s breathtaking scenic views. Sitting atop a 30-foot
bluff overlooking the tranquil harbor waters, the City of Clearwater incor-
porates all of its natural assets - Florida’s bounteous flora and fauna--with a
design for urban living and for its businesses.

The most relaxing (and romantic) way to get to Downtown Clearwater from
the beach is to hop on the Clearwater Ferry. There are three vessels that
depart from Clearwater Marina throughout the day. Unless you would like
to travel to North Clearwater Beach, Island Estates or Dunedin, you will be
let off at the Clearwater Harbor and Marina, which is undoubtedly one of
the city’s gems. There are 126 boat slips, more than 1,000 feet of overnight
side-tie mooring for visitors, and more than 600 feet of side-tie mooring
for daytime visits and special events in the downtown area. The daytime
space is free.

The Clearwater Main Public Library,
100 N. Osceola Avenue, Clearwater
World-renowned architect, Robert A.M. Stern, Dean of the Yale Universi-
ty School of Architecture, designed the current Clearwater Main Public Li-
brary’s new facility. The $20.2 million building project, which boasts floor
to ceiling windows on its top floor, a finished rooftop setting perfect for
business parties and cultural gatherings, and a vast collection of books,
e-books, downloadables, and DVDs as well as access to prominent infor-
mation databases. There is ample seating on all three floors, however spec-
tacular views of the Clearwater Causeway, intercoastal waterways, and
Clearwater Beach can be found on the Second and Third Floors.

Most recently, the library opened its Maker Space Studios, which features
a 3-D printer, laser engraver, sewing machine, and digital die-cut printer.
There is also a Multimedia Studio with a Green Screen and backdrops,
professional lighting, video camera and microphones, and an iMac with
Adobe Creative Cloud. If you’re interested in putting old photos, audio
recordings, slides, and videos online for preservation, the library’s Heritage
Studio has all of the necessary equipment. The library’s staff members pro-
vide brief orientations and are available to answer questions. Rooms must
be reserved in advance.

Downtown Clearwater

Blast Friday Celebrations
The volume’s turned up high and music fills the air. It’s Blast Friday in Down-
town Clearwater. The party happens on the 400 Block of Cleveland Street
on the last Friday night of every month, 5:30 to 10 pm. The strong aromas
of grilled sausages, Italian pizza, and a variety of ethnic fare make tummies
start growling. Grab a bite to eat, listen to your favorite local singer or join
in the dancing taking place right in the middle of the street. It’s the best kind
of party because everyone is welcome. Come as a family, with a group of
friends, or alone. Relax, enjoy some good food, and kick back after a long
week at work or at play. The musical roster every month highlights both
emerging and established musicians. There’s fun activities and contests and
unique vendors that make for an interesting shopping experience.

Capitol Theatre - 405 Cleveland Street, Clearwater
Constructed in 1921, the Capitol Theatre’s red-
and-gold plush stage curtain, seats and ornate
trimming are reminiscent of Hollywood’s Gold-
en Age. One of the oldest operating perform-
ing arts venues in Florida, the Capitol Theatre
is known for having some of the best natural
acoustics in the southeastern United States.
Perhaps this is why renowned rock’n roll head-
liners, world class comedians, and celebrity
entertainers have brought their shows to this
legendary stage. A cultural landmark located
in the heart of downtown Clearwater, the 750-
seat Capitol Theatre narrowly escaped dem-
olition more than once in the past 74 years.
Fortunately, the City of Clearwater purchased
the property in 2009 and The Ruth Eckerd Hall - Richard B. Baumgardner
Center for the Performing Arts manages the building. As the result of a
major renovation in 2013, the theatre now boasts luxurious private loge
boxes, multiple concession stands, VIP Lounge, and an expanded lobby that
features an uncovered Panel of Honor from World War I with the names
of Clearwater residents who served in the war. Because of its proximity to
the water, the Capitol Theatre also offers exquisite views of sunsets over
the Clearwater Causeway from its outdoor balcony and Frenchy’s Rooftop
Terrace.

IMAGINE - Downtown Clearwater’s Future!
Understanding the value of its downtown waterfront property, the City of
Clearwater has partnered with residents to put together a plan to sustain
its beauty while enhancing its usability. The vision for Imagine Clearwa-

ter, the plan to transform this already vibrant
area into a thriving, multi-use public space, in-
cludes increased greenery and marsh gardens,
an eco park, playground with equipment de-
signed in collaboration with local artists, picnic
grove, and enhancements to Coachman Park
where large-scale events take place annually.
A promenade on Cleveland Street will better
connect the waterfront area to the Clearwater
Main Public Library and Clearwater’s business
district.

Dolphin Trail

One of the most popular free activities around is the Clearwater
Dolphin Trail. With over 200+ (and counting!) uniquely decorated
dolphins located along this trail, this is a family-friendly way to
explore Tampa Bay.

Started in 2012 with fewer than 1 dozen dolphins, area businesses
have been “joining the pod” and hiring area artists to give each
dolphin it’s own unique look. A map of dolphins along with their
location addresses can be found at www.clearwatersdolphins.
com or by downloading the App! Search “The Clearwater Dolphin
Trail“ in the App Store or on Google Play.

Consider slipping on some comfortable shoes and following the
trail yourself. You can share your experience by posting to social

Protect our Beaches

Our beaches are a beautiful place that we hope to enjoy for
generations to come. The ocean is the ultimate playground and
the sugar sand shore serves as a great break spot for your much
needed R&R. However, our oceans are in danger. There are a
staggering amount of threats to our shores and seas. So what can
you do to help? Here are a few ideas to get you started!

Take steps to dispose of your trash properly by bringing it to the bins
and recycle when appropriate. Request eco-friendly packaging
options when purchasing goods to consume and avid single-
use plastics. Take it a step further by patroning Ocean-Friendly
Restaurants, such as Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber, who have gone
the extra mile to ensure the use of sustainable goods throughout
their operation. Read the ingredients on your sunscreens and
lotions and aim to wear organic or reef safe products.

Thank you for helping us protect our award-winning beaches so
guests can enjoy them for generations to come!
