Naomi Samara is a self taught artist, curator and stylist based in Bali,
Indonesia. Sex In The Garden was created during her 2016 summer artist

residency on Orcas Island, Washington.

‘Sex In the Garden’ dissects Beauty and Desire; Viewed by the artist as illusory

characters that live within layers of changeable truths.

Naomi Samara is a visual artist known to use her own image as a starting point. With
a mirror, she assumes the role of an observer. Naomi applies layers of translucent
paint on canvas, compartmentalizing her own form into dripping, unruly shapes

that portray inner realities.
‘Sex in The Garden’ was birthed through a realization that what she was attempting
to find within is abundant in nature. Perishable flora display intricate structures
and expose raw sexual vulnerability. She sees the drive of attraction as being
displayed openly in flowers thus making it the closest and most honest form of

beauty.

‘I see the flower as me turned inside-out. The core is revealed on the
surface while the inevitable layers of truths that accumulate over time

remain underneath.’

Naomi allows the foreign structures to organically transform through a series of
uninhibited brush strokes that create figurative and abstract ‘beings’.

The outcome does not portray an idealized beauty, but exposes the all-encompassing
gravity of its search.

will be exhibited at Ghostbird + Swoon from the 10th

until the 24th of December 2016
