What is Your
Credit Score?

AND WHY IT MATTERS

By Ashley Chorpenning

Credit scores are an essential component to building a secure financial future for
yourself, especially if you’re just beginning to achieve milestones such as purchasing
your first home or advancing your career. Your credit score can significantly impact
the likelihood of getting credit and the amount of money it will cost you to accomplish
your financial goals. If you want to save money and have a secure financial future,
here’s what you need to know about your credit score.

WHAT IS A CREDIT SCORE?
A credit score is a three-digit number generated by a mathematical algorithm composed of data
on your credit report. Its purpose is to predict risk and the probability of your becoming delinquent
on your credit responsibilities.

There are many different credit-scoring models. A favorite scoring tool is a FICO score, developed
by the Fair Isaac Corporation. According to myFICO.com, 90 percent of financial institutions use
your FICO score for all of their credit decision-making.

There are three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. All of them use the FICO scoring
model to give each consumer three individual scores. These scores range from 300 to 850. The
higher your credit score, the lower the risk you are to lenders.

HOW IS YOUR CREDIT SCORE CALCULATED?
Five categories go into calculating your FICO credit score, and each factor is weighted differently.

•P ayment history: This is the most critical factor when determining your credit score. It’s crucial
that you pay all of your bills on time, every time. Any late or delinquent payments could negatively
impact your score. This factor accounts for 35 percent of your score.

•C redit utilization: The second most important factor is your balance-to-limit ratio. You never
want to use more than 30 percent of your credit limit at a time. Ideally, you should repay your credit
balances off every month. You can determine your credit utilization rate by adding up all your credit
balances and dividing by your total credit limit. Credit utilization makes up 30 percent of your total
credit score.

4 AAA INSIGHTS • January/February 2019

• Credit history: This factor is calculated by the length and variety of your accounts. Different accounts
may include your mortgage, personal loans, credit cards and more. This factor is 15 percent of your score.

• Recent activity: Any credit application in the last 3 to 6 months, new inquiries and whether you are taking
on more debt or paying it off go into calculating your recent activity. This factor is 10 percent of your score.

•C apacity: This factor is your overall capacity including outstanding installment debt. It accounts for the
remaining 10 percent of your score.

WHAT ACTIONS MIGHT IMPACT YOUR CREDIT SCORE?
A common concern is how specific actions will directly impact your credit score. For example, will closing a
credit card increase your credit score? This may seem simple to answer, but actions may impact credit criteria
in different ways. Understand that the data provided on your credit report and any changes to that data could
affect your score.

By closing an account, you lower your revolving credit accounts, which may improve your credit score. However,
you’re also decreasing your amount of credit availability, which may lower your score. So it may be impossible to
predict how a single action can affect your credit score.

AAA INSIGHTS • January/February 2019 5

HOW CAN YOU ACCESS CREDIT SCORES?
You’re eligible for a free copy of your credit report from all major credit bureaus
every 12 months on AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 1-877-322-8228. If
you have been denied credit, you are permitted to review your credit report
within 60 days of the inquiry.

The number one complaint received by the Consumer Financial Protection
Bureau is incorrect data on credit reports. This is why you should review your
credit report once a year to ensure all data is accurate. Any error on your credit
report could drastically impact your score.

If you do spot an error on your credit report, you will need to contact all three
credit bureaus and the institution that was responsible for the claim. Under
the Fair Credit Reporting Act, all parties involved are responsible for an error
on your report.

All credit bureaus are now accepting online submissions, with Experian only
accepting online disputes. When submitting a claim, you want to be sure to
provide your name, address and supporting documentation of your dispute.
Your dispute should also:
•clearly identify the item you would like to dispute on your claim
•p rovide the supporting details and explain why you’re disputing this data
•request the deletion or rectification of the disputed item

You can file complaints using the following sites:
•Experian: www.Experian.com/dispute
•Transunion: www.dispute.transunion.com
•Equifax: www.equifax.com/personal/disputes

Once you have completed a submission, reach out to your lender or the orga-
nization who provided the misinformation on your credit report. Explain that
you have contacted all credit bureaus and be sure to give them copies of the
documentation you sent.

Take the time to review your credit report to determine areas that may need
improvement. Remember, the higher your credit score, the lower your interest
rates will be. Having a good credit score will help you save money and improve
your financial security.

How to Raise Your Credit Score

By Ashley Chorpenning

Your credit score can impact many areas of your life, and its importance can’t be overstated. A
poor credit score can affect your job search, personal insurance policies and even interest rates
on a mortgage—costing you hundreds or thousands of dollars over your lifetime. So if your credit
score needs a boost, here are some ways to improve it.

PAY BILLS ON TIME
Paying your bills on time is imperative to establishing a good credit score. Even if you have minimal debt, making payments
on time can have a substantial impact on your score. Falling even a few days behind on a payment can impact your credit
score negatively, so it’s important to pay on time.

If you find yourself forgetting to make payments, set up reminders or automatic bill pay. These strategies will help you
keep track of your accounts so you never miss or fall behind on a payment.

MAINTAIN LOW REVOLVING CREDIT BALANCES
Your balance-to-limit ratio is an essential factor when determining your credit score. To calculate your balance-to-limit
ratio, add up all your credit balances and divide by your total credit limit. You never want to use more than 30 percent
of your total credit limit at a time. Ideally, you should pay your credit balances off every month.

Once you pay off some of your credit balances, don’t close the accounts. Closing credit cards to increase your score is
not a good short-term strategy. Keep in mind, closed accounts will still remain on your report.

ONLY APPLY FOR REVOLVING CREDIT WHEN NECESSARY
Don't only apply for a credit card or loan just to increase your credit score. It could end up backfiring. If you need to open
new accounts, try to spread them out over time, as opening too many at once could negatively impact your score.

PAY OFF DEBT
If you currently have any type of debt, you should work toward paying it off. Not only will this increase your credit score,
but it also will leave you feeling accomplished.

Review all of your accounts and the total amount of debt you owe. Then make a plan, such as repaying your smallest
credit balance or highest interest debt first.

Remember, increasing your credit score might not happen overnight. But by making positive changes and taking
action over time, you can be well on your way to an excellent credit score.

PRO TIPS

Paying Off Your
Credit Card Debt

By Benjamin Szweda

Credit card debt is a drag. It is no fun paying for something this month that was purchased last
month or even several years ago. The principal, interest and fees going to creditors each month
could instead pay for an Icelandic vacation, fulfill a savings goal or fund a retirement investment
account (it's never too early—or too late—to save!). One of the fastest ways to increase disposable
income is to decrease debt payments. But how do you do that? There are many strategies for
paying down debt. General rules include paying more than the minimum payment each month on
at least one account and not adding to the credit card balance. Here are some other approaches
suggested by the pros.

THINK SMALL
Financial guru Dave Ramsey touts “the debt snowball” as the best way to
pay off debt. The plan is to pay the minimum balance on all credit cards
except the one with the smallest balance. All excess money is put on the
account with the smallest balance. Once that account is paid off, move to
the newest smallest balance account, paying the minimum plus whatever
was previously going to the now paid off account.

The foundation of this suggestion makes psychological sense. Knocking
off the smallest debt first may provide the encouragement and momen-
tum needed to stick with a debt-reduction plan. The approach, however,
ignores the effect having cards with high balances has on your credit
score. The approach also does not take advantage of cost savings along
the way that can be realized by moving debt to accounts with lower
interest rates or by paying off the card with the highest interest rate first.

HIGHEST INTEREST FIRST
Determine which credit card has the highest annual percentage rate (APR) and get the balance on that account down
as quickly as possible. Use the same general method described above: pay the minimum on all accounts except the
one with the highest interest. This strategy will save money on interest, which can then increase the amount that can
be paid against the principal.

8 AAA INSIGHTS • January/February 2019

THIRTY PERCENT RULE
This method focuses most on maintaining a healthy credit score by controlling the debt-to-credit ratio on each credit
card account (total debt divided by total extended credit). Thirty percent and under is a good target for the debt-to-
credit ratio. Go above that ratio, and creditors get nervous and your credit scores may dip. Figure out which one of
your accounts has the highest debt-to-credit ratio and use the above pay-down method to get the ratio below 30
percent as quickly as possible.

USE BALANCE TRANSFERS
Balance transfer offers may not be extended to consumers with high debt and a poor credit score, but as your debt

situation improves, so will the offers available to you. Check offers available on current accounts before opening
new accounts. A typical offer might be 0 percent interest for 18 months with a 5 percent fee. Before accepting a
balance transfer offer, be sure you can pay off the transferred balance in full before the offer term expires.

PAY IT OFF WITH A PERSONAL LOAN
As with balance transfers, personal loan offers from banks may not be available to all consumers. Once they become
available, however, taking out a personal loan at a lower interest rate than your credit cards charge might be a good
idea. The money borrowed can be used to pay off a higher interest rate credit card, saving you money on interest that
can then be used to pay down principal. The loan can even be split up to pay off multiple creditors at once. Third-party
companies, such as Consolidated Credit or National Debt Relief, offer debt-consolidation services, but the service may
come with a set-up fee and monthly service fees.

DEBT SETTLEMENT
This option is a last resort, especially if you will need a good credit score anytime soon for things like buying a house
or a car. The reason is that many debt settlement programs call for technically stopping payments to your credit card
companies. This will hurt your credit score in the short term, as payments will appear late. When the debt is finally
paid off, credit reports will show debt as settled instead of paid, a less favorable status that will remain on your credit
report for seven years. Some people have climbed out of debt using a third-party company’s assistance, but many
others have been taken by a scam. Before signing any contracts, check for complaints against the debt settlement
program with the State Attorney General or the Better Business Bureau.

TRAVEL RX

MAINTAINING HEALTHY HABITS ON THE ROAD

By Benjamin Szweda

Between spending time in close quarters with fellow passengers and the dreaded jet lag,
travel can take its toll on the immune system. Add in early mornings, late nights, airport
meals, hours of meetings and plain old stress, and it can be easy to fall off the fitness or
healthy eating routine that was working so well back home. The best approach to not backslide
into a fast food drive-thru or the hotel room’s couch is to plan ahead and keep it simple.

HOTEL ROOM REPS
Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail.” So be sure to save room
in the suitcase for gym shoes and workout clothing. If there is extra space, exercise equipment such as TRX
Suspension Trainers or resistance bands travel well. Both offer a wide range of exercise and stretch options
for people of all ages that can be done in the privacy of a hotel room. Whether rows or push-ups, curls or
core exercises, all can be done or enhanced with a TRX or resistance band.

GET IN THE (HOTEL) GYM
One positive to traveling is that the gym is just an elevator ride (or stairs) away. Even the most basic of hotels
typically offer a treadmill or a stationary bike. At the very least, after a day of sitting on planes or in meetings,
just go for a walk. If it is within your ability, increase your heart rate with intervals: sprint for 30 seconds, walk
for 45 seconds, repeat. Lengthen or shorten the interval ratio to increase or decrease workout difficulty.

NUTRITION ON THE GO
Good nutrition starts on the plane. It is best to bring food from home or a local grocery store, but if you didn’t,
at least avoid the saltiest of the onboard food options. Instead, choose high-protein nutrient-dense foods,
which maximize the number of nutrients (e.g., lean protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, vitamins) compared
to the number of calories. And always drink plenty of water.

NUTRITION IN THE HOTEL
Breakfast is a good time to set up a successful day and steer away
from a mid-morning sugar crash. Save money and avoid desserts
disguised as breakfast by skipping the hotel buffet. Instead,
order an omelet with vegetables and a protein. If you must take
breakfast to go, plain yogurt and plain granola with fruit is a good
option. High protein and high fiber bars will also work in a pinch.
Coffee is good, too, but chase it down with water and take a bottle
of water to go. Pro-tip: Reusable water bottles can usually be filled
up in the hotel gym (and they’re great for the planet! Win-win).

GET IN THE KNOW

Before You Need a Tow

It’s a scene we’re all familiar with: a driver on the side of the highway being rescued
by a AAA tow truck. Maybe it’s a flat tire, or maybe it’s an engine failure, but there’s
one thing we can be sure of—that driver isn’t having the best day. And we all know that
vehicle breakdowns could happen to any car, at any time.

But have you ever wondered how likely it is that your vehicle could end up on the side
of the road? We went ahead and crunched the numbers to show you the top 10 vehicle
makes and models that were towed by a AAA tow truck in 2017, along with the most
common reason it was towed. Run through the list and take note if your vehicle made it.

YOUR ADVICE

GETTING TO A BETTER YOU

By AAA Member, Ashlee Kantner

Although she is currently a very fit mother, Ashlee Kantner was not always so health conscious. It
took years, but Ashlee has developed a passion for learning everything she can about health and
nutrition. Ashlee went from being unhappy about herself to becoming a healthy and happy fitness
instructor. Her gained love of health and fitness led her to achieve a group fitness certification,
which allows her to teach boot camp, Piloxing and yoga. She also studied to receive her health and
nutrition certification, and more recently became a virtual health coach.
Here are Ashlee’s top ten tips for living a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.
1. Set goals and make a plan. Goals without a plan are just dreams. Getting healthy will not happen by chance,
you have to make it happen. Write down your goals and read them aloud. Read them often and share them with
others.
2. Learn about the nutrition plan for you. Food is fuel, and what you eat is literally the most important aspect of
health and life. One size does not fit all. You really need to understand your body from the inside out. There are many
diets on the market, and while some people find great success in some of them, don’t be discouraged if you don’t.
Keep searching until you discover the nutrition plan that works best for you.
3. Read labels. There are so many hidden ingredients in packaged food that not only hinder success, but can actually
set you back by making you feel sluggish. While reading labels, know what to look for. Educate yourself to understand
which“bad” ingredients to avoid.

26 AAA INSIGHTS • January/February 2019

4. Say no to sugar. Added sugar will do more than just add to your waistline. Sugar is addictive, and it can lead to
obesity, inflammation, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. These are all risk factors for heart disease, the lead-
ing cause of death in both men and women. Sugar changes the way our bodies process food, so once you eliminate
sugar, your taste buds will change and food will start to taste so much better (no more sour strawberries).

5. Drink, drink, drink! Water, that is. Water is essential for your body to function correctly. Drinking the correct
amount of water each day (1/2 your body weight in ounces + an additional 8 oz. for every 30 minutes of exercise) will
properly hydrate you for optimal health. Water has a significant impact on your energy levels and your brain function.
Drinking enough water can also help reduce headaches, promote regularity and proper kidney function, and aid in
weight loss.

6. Sleep on it. Rest is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle and can benefit your heart, weight and mind. Adequate sleep
is defined as 6–8 hours a night, but everyone’s needs are different. Listen to your body and give it the rest it deserves.

7. Exercise. Not only does working out make you feel great, but it is also a great form of stress relief. Exercise releases
endorphins that make you feel good and happy. It will also aid in weight loss, help tone and tighten, and help make
your outside feel and look good.

8. Be consistent. Stick to your plan, work hard, be persistent and you will see results.

9. Join a group. You do not have to do this alone. Find like-minded people who are on a similar journey. Get a group
of friends together and challenge each other. Join a social media group. Surrounding yourself with positivity and
excitement will aid in your success.

10. Have fun. Find a nutrition plan you enjoy and do workouts that make you smile.

Jump Start Your New Year

Top Signs That Your Car Battery Needs to Be Checked

By Jim Malervy

We have come to rely on our cars like air and water. We expect them to start every time we
turn the key, to power through the most extreme weather conditions and to get us to our
destinations on time. But a failing car battery can quickly turn a reliable vehicle into a major
inconvenience.
As you enter the new year, heed the following five warning signs that can often predict when
your battery may need immediate attention.

Slow engine crank: While starting your vehicle, you may notice that the cranking of the engine is sluggish
and that your car takes longer to start than usual. You may also hear a clicking sound as your engine struggles to
turn over.

Dashboard warning light: If the dreaded “check engine” or “check battery” light turns on, your battery power
may be waning.

Swollen battery case/corrosion: Hot temperatures can often cause your battery to become bloated,
ultimately leading to decreased battery life. Also, if you see any corrosion—a chalky residue built up around the
terminals—your battery needs to be cleaned off and may need to be replaced.

Low battery fluid: A visual inspection of the translucent casing of your car’s battery can allow you to keep an
eye on your battery fluid level. If the level drops below the lead plates, you may experience challenges with your
battery’s power.

Old age: Batteries more than three years old can often be operating on borrowed time, so annual inspections
beginning at the three-year mark are encouraged.

Be sure to pay close attention to your battery when the temperature drops below freezing, rises above 90
degrees Fahrenheit and when you haven’t started your car in more than two weeks. These three conditions
increase the risk of your battery losing its power.
