PUPIL COMMENTS ON 2016 2017

By Year 1 and year 3

This year I have most enjoyed art because I really like adding details to things and colouring in . My favourite
topic was Magnets because I found it quite easy and I learnt that magnets only stick to other magnets and
steel. I have learnt how to do the grid method for multiplication which I am very proud of. At playtime I play
games like tag and British bull dogs with lots of different people. The hardest subject in school is literacy be-
cause I find it difficult to control the pen. The best trip I went on was to the BFG because it was really good to
see it again.

My favourite lessons in school are science, I especially enjoyed learning about animal families. I
also enjoy maths and history because I like working with numbers and learning about how
Florence Nightingale changed the hospitals. I like to draw and make models with K Nex and the
construction toys outside, when we are allowed to choose. PE has been fun, especially working on
the apparatus for gymnastics. I enjoy going swimming, jumping into the water. We had a good
trip to Pensby church to learn about Easter and Jesus. This year I am most proud of my reading,
I enjoy reading stories most. I am looking forward to Year 2. To get ready I think I need to
practise hard sums with big numbers.

This year I have most enjoyed baking because it is really fun. My favourite subject was literacy because I liked
writing about Beegu and Scotland. I have learnt how to bake and how to stay inside the lines in Art which I am
very proud of. At playtime I normally play British bulldogs. The hardest subject in school is maths because I just
find it really hard and I don't know why. The best trip I went on was to Chester because we got to walk around
in the street dressed as Romans.

In Year 4 my target is to get better at maths. I'd like to be able to do division better.

At school I like writing, especially information. I like to listen so that I can learn and listen to
other children. I enjoy choosing time when I can play with K Nex, draw and colour. I like to use
the role play, playing house in the Home Corner, and the Small World area, especially the
hospital. The lessons I enjoy are maths because I like working with numbers. In PE I enjoy the
games we play to warm up ready for our lesson. In Year 1 we have had some good trips. We went
to the church to hear the Easter story and to Liverpool for a concert. This Year I am most
proud of my work in maths. To get ready for Year 2 I think I need to work on my spelling and
my Fast Fives.

This year I have most enjoyed maths because it has challenged me more. My favourite topic was Scotland
because I liked making my stickman snowboarder. I have learnt how to add bigger numbers which I am very
proud of. At playtime I play British bulldogs with my friends. The hardest subject in school is literacy because I
find it hard to make up stories. The best trip I went on was the Roman one because we got to chant in the
street.

Nursery Page Nursery have had fun in the outdoor
environment. They have been working
on physical development skills as well

as cooperation skills when working
together. They are amazing at using the

crazy bikes and can whizz around the
track very quickly as well as controlling

them in much smaller spaces. They
have also had fun building dens

together, playing parachute games and
practising going up and down steps
carefully.

Nursery had great fun with
the dinosaur topic, the small

with all of the children and
they even found dinosaur
bones in the outside garden
area which they very carefully
dug up and investigated. They
made their own dinosaur
skeletons after reading 'Funny

Bones.'

GOVERNORS PAGE

Dear Families,

We have come to the end of a very successful year for the school.

We started the year with the Governors working with the staff to
monitor all areas of learning very systematically. One of the most
rewarding tasks in doing this was ’pupil voice’ - when we talk to
the children (and they will tell us everything they think….good
and bad!). It did soon become apparent, that although the
curriculum was more challenging and the expectations of the
children were high, they were rising to the challenge and actually
enjoying doing so. Our monitoring consistently shows high
standards in all classes in the school and the children being
delivered a broad and exciting curriculum.

When OFSTED visited, 9 Governors were keen to
meet with Mark Quinn, the HMI. He thoroughly
looked into all aspects of the school and delivered a
report that was widely in line with what we
thought. To know that the school is still ‘good’
despite the increased expectations to attain this
judgement, was very satisfying.

Another positive aspect of the year, was our work with the
Governors of the Federation Schools. We are very proud to be
Pensby Primary, but we are also very proud to be part of South
Deeside Primary School Federation. The chairs and headteachers
have already developed a strong working relationship and there
are many exciting and interesting developments that will benefit
all our schools.

I do hope that you have been regularly checking the governors
page of the website. This has been developed by our Clerk to
Governors (Mrs J. Gibson). The minutes of meetings, attendance
at meetings and other governor information is there for you.

On behalf of the Governing Board, we thank you for an excellent
year and wish you a happy summer.
Mr D Spencer Chair of Governors.

Year 1 page

Year 1 can manage just about
anything! This term they have
mastered writing, conducted

scientific experiments and
challenged themselves with a range
of maths problems. And they have
come out on top. What a great class

they are—well done year 1!!

This term we made a May pole in Breakfast Club.
The children decorated their flowers and stuck

them to the pole. We then put the pole in our
outdoor area and the children attempted a
traditional may pole dance. Well done!!

Bowling in Afterschool club. The
children enjoy group games outside and

encourage and support each other.

Wraparound- The children enjoyed
many activities this term. We have
been practising writing our name.

The children have had a go at
making bar models and even
sequencing stories. The Very
Hungry Caterpillar was a favourite
amongst the children this term.
We learnt the days of the week
and what type of mini beasts live in
our outdoor area. We have done
lots of investigating, using
magnifying glasses to look at bugs

we’ve found.

YEAR 4 PAGE

Year 4 have led the
way in showing how
written work should
be drafted, edited
and Improved. They
help each other to do
this and this method
means it really makes

sense and they
remember it. In
maths they are
excellent at making
quick jottings that
show their thinking!

PUPIL COMMENTS ON 2016 2017

By Year 5 and year 2

I've really enjoyed year 5. I enjoyed literacy the most because its my favourite subject. Mostly
the spelling. I’ve loved having Mrs Gilleece, Mrs Robson and Mrs Somerville teach me this year.
They've helped me make my maths skills much better. I liked reading War of the Worlds in
Literacy and making up a new planet. In year 6 I cant wait to have buddy. I'll definitely miss
year 5 as its been one of my favourite.

Year 5 has been the best. My highlights have been learning to write my name in Greek, PE and
sports week. The best part of year 5 was going to see Cressida Cowell in Heswall and the
extended write about our new planet. My targets are to proof read my work more and practise
my hand writing. I look forward to year 6 because we have a water fight and we get to know
our buddies.

My favourite thing about year 5 was doing Spanish especially when we take the register and I
liked Art and RE. The best part of year 5 was when Mrs Robson made cakes. Mrs Gilleece is a
great teacher and we like to digress in our class worship where we all discuss different things.
My favourite part was spellings and learning new, big words like factious. We get to learn their
meanings too. I think I have improved my spellings and my Maths this year.

I enjoyed being in Year 2, even though I didn't think I would like it at first. We had to do lots of hard
work, especially writing but everybody was really nice and we got lots of help from all of the teachers. I
liked doing P.E. the most this year, especially when we did gymnastics. This year I have got better at
solving problems and I try harder if I get them wrong. I think I need to try harder with my writing to
make sure it is neat.
I am scared and nervous about Year 3 because the work might be too hard and I don't know what to do
at the end of the day when we go home. I think the teacher will be nice though, I hope it is Mrs Beggs.

I was very worried about Year 2 because we don't get to choose and we have to do SATs but if you try
your best it is fine! All of the teachers help you to do your work so I got lots better at writing and
maths. We had lots of practise for our SATs and I just did my best - they were tricky but we had a fun
Pirate Party at the end. In September I couldn't read very well but now I am good at it because I
practise a lot at home and Mrs Davey helps me in school. I think I need to try harder with my spellings.
I am looking forward to Year 3 and think my teachers will be nice.

I liked Year 2. I like it when we do reading and maths because maths is fun. Sometimes we go out into
the playground for our maths work and that is fun! My favourite thing this year has been our P.E. work -
I really enjoyed all of the different things we did and Sports week was really fun!
At the start of the year I couldn't tell the time well, but now I can and I am pleased with this. I am
getting better at problem solving and I liked working with the teachers to do this.
I think I need to try a bit harder with Science - sometimes I think it is quite tricky.
I think Year 3 will be really good but I am a bit worried about going out on my own at hometime.

PTA PAGE

Dear families,

Since the last edition of the Post, the
PTA have continued to organise and
lead a wide range of events for the
children to enjoy. We are very proud
of all we have done.

Our meetings have been well attended and we have lots of ideas for
next year.

We lose some very good members of the PTA this year, as their children
leave school. We thank them all. We must say thank you to Mrs J Evans
for the brilliant work she has done as our treasurer.- a huge job! We
need more new members to come forward and help us next year—so
come to a meeting and see what you can do to help all the children in
the school. We need you!

We are currently raising funds for a shelter on the central playground
area. This is what the children have asked for. We are also looking to
work with a designer to plan playground equipment in the other
playground areas. All this is going to cost a lot! We have a healthy bank
balance of £7000, but to pay for the shelter and the playground
equipment is going to cost an awful lot more. So please dig deep and
get involved. Support our events but help us out by attending meetings
too—you just may have a great idea that will accelerate our fundraising.

The PTA must also thank the staff of the school who always support
our events so well—this was really evident at the summer fair where
they all came along and gave up so much time. It was lovely to be part
of that.

We are looking forward to the next school year and as well as new
events, we will be repeating some of our favourites. Keep up to date by
reading our minutes on the PTA page of the website. Have a lovely
summer,

Your PTA

OAKLANDS 2017

YEAR 5 PAGE

It has been an incredibly busy term in year 5. The
class have worked so hard and made tremendous
progress. They have enjoyed a very wide and varied
curriculum and this has sparked their interest. A
highlight was meeting Cressida Cowell the author of
‘How To Train Your Dragon’. That was an experience

to never forget.

SPORTS WEEK

Sports week was a huge
success and enjoyed so much
by everyone. The final event

was the Race for Life that
raised a huge amount for

Cancer Research!

Every day, the pupils competed in a
different sport. They earned points for

their school teams—ASHLEY won!!!

Reception page

Our reception children have really grown up this
year. They are confident and eager. It is so
satisfying to see them ready for the next
challenge in year 1—where they will do well!

Even in reception class, the children learn the
spelling of words—some of them very tricky
words! They practice at home and have to
write them in school—and have to correct
them too! It’s a lot of hard work but it really

helps them to learn!

PUPIL COMMENTS ON 2016 2017

By Year 4 and year 6

I am really proud that I have learnt how to play the ukulele. It is the first instrument that I have ever learnt to play.
The most difficult thing I have done in year 4 is bar modelling. It is sometimes really hard to understand how to
partition a calculation to present as a bar but I am getting better. My favourite visit in year 4 has been to see
Cressida Cowell at Heswall Primary School. I have never met a real author before and she was great. My target for
next year is to be good at spellings

I have enjoyed everything this year in 4T because the teachers have made it fun. My favourite part was going to
Barnstondale because I loved doing the archery, it was amazing. I am very proud of the amount of dojos I get. I
enjoy playtime, especially going on the top playground because there is so much space to run. I find the tests that
we do the hardest because they give me a headache. My target for next year is to never give up and keep on going

My favourite topic is history because we learn about things that happened years and years ago, such as the
Vikings. I like being in a class with fab teachers. At playtime I play with my friends. This is fun too. I find maths
the most difficult because a lot of the questions are challenging but my teachers help me and I can do a lot more
for myself. I am proud to have earned a pen to write with. I can't wait to know what year 5 is like. My target is to
do my best, improve my writing and make my letters bigger.

In Year 6 I have learnt a lot like electricity and about famous authors, but the best lesson was in maths when we
solved problems. My greatest achievement was when we learnt about fractions at the start of the maths topic, I
hated fractions but now it's the best part of maths and I really understand it more. The funniest moment was
when Mr K was sitting and messing on his chair, he leant back and fell off! I think through all the years of high
school I will remember that moment! The things I will miss the most are my friends and all the fun moments we
shared together.

I have really enjoyed 6K. there has been many memorable moments such as the day I broke my ankle and had to
attend the Christmas play on crutches. I will always remember the jokes Mr Klausen used to tell. I will miss all of
the amazing staff and pupils at Pensby Primary because they are amazing and very fun. I have also overcome
many challenges - such as my fear of heights - at Oaklands. Year 6 is so fun and you learn to be more mature as
to go to High School. I will really miss this incredible school.

This year I have learnt so many new things such as multiplying and dividing fractions! My favourite subject is PE
because playing dodge-ball is so much fun. My greatest achievement is knowing my times tables fluently. My
favourite memory is Oaklands because it was so much fun exploring the gorge. I will all my friends and hopefully
still keep in touch.

SUMMER FAIR 2017
