ALICE MAY SPRULES

I would like to thank all my friends and neighbours for their kind
words on the passing of my mother Alice. Her wish was to go in her
own home where she had lived for 74 years overlooking her much
loved garden and her wish was granted, she didn't quite make her
107th birthday in October.
Born in 1913 she had lived through two world wars and was one of
eight children, living above the greengrocery shop owned by her
parents.
Her first home with my father was a flat in Venner Road Sydenham,
when I was about 4 we moved to Bromley where my parents set up
home in Kynaston Road.
My brothers and I had a happy childhood, my mother was a good
needlewoman and made all our clothes, our meal times were always
a treat as my mother always
put on a good spread, our
favourite being macaroni
cheese, nobody made it quite
like mum, even as adults when
we visited it was always
requested.
We were so privileged to have
our lovely mum for so long,
her mind was as sharp as a
needle and we were soon told
if things were not quite right,
even as adults. It will leave a
huge hole in our lives, but we
have happy memories of the
times when we visited her.

The picture shows Mum on
her 105th birthday with her card from the Queen and her
comment was ‘at least she’s got a different outfit on!’

Monday 16th November at 7.30pm

The nomination form will be displayed on the notice board from 26th October for 3 weeks prior to the meeting
Social distancing will be in place, please check in using the NHS app.
We require both Committee and Officers
*Chairman
*Vice-Chairman
*Secretary
*Treasurer
*Committee personnel
The position of Treasurer and Secretary will be appointed by the Committee. It is very important to note that
unless people come forward to fill these positions, it is probable that the club will have to close its doors. The
club is an important part of our village life and would be a tremendous loss to the community.

Please telephone Shirley Wood on 01843 822 469
or email: [email protected] for more information.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
ALAN BLAKE

After a long wait because of Covid-19, Minster
Bowls Club managed to play one of last season’s
Short Mat competition games.

Adhering to government guidelines and strict rules
laid down by the East Kent Short Mat Bowls
Association (EKSMBA) the two players who had
won their semi-finals, earlier in the year, prepared
to play their final game on Saturday 17th October
to attempt to win the Morphew Cup.

Finalists were Chris Richardson and Alan Blake.
The game was played with 4 woods over 15 ends.
In the early part of the match there was not a lot
between both players, but by the 7th end Alan had
started to pull away - with 2 ends still to play and
with Alan leading 15 - 5 Chris knew he was
defeated and so conceded the game to Alan.

Colin Hulks In Memory
In Memory of Brian Morphew
We would like to say a big thank you to family,
friends, neighbours and cricketers for making Memorial Flower Boxes at Minster Bowls Club
Colin’s final journey through Minster so
special. We felt very proud and honoured that
so many of you took the time to pay your
respects.
Thank you to both Minster Surgery and Pilgrims
Hospice Margate for the care and kindness
shown to Colin throughout his short illness.
A special thank you to Jonathan Cole and his
team for going out of their way with their
personal touches and making it a fitting tribute
to Colin. Thank you also to Pat Oliver for the
beautiful service and Vanessa for the lovely
floral tributes.
Finally thank you for the cards, flowers, letters
and donations we have received since Colin’s
passing, it has been overwhelming.
Maureen, Julie, Kevin and families

SYLVIA FLORENCE GIBBS
Sylvia passed away on 19th August 2020, my
partner of 18 years.
I would like to thank the many people of
Minster, who gave her such a send off through
the village, and the many people who stood
outside the Salvation Army shop, a place she
loved to work on a Monday afternoon.
Also, many thanks to Jonathan Cole and his
staff for their professional and friendly help.
It made me proud to live in Minster

A season to remember…

All Souls Day – Sunday November 1st
St Mary’s Church Open for Prayer and Lighting a Candle

1.00pm-4.00pm

2020 has been a difficult year in so many ways and there have been times when we have
not been able to mourn the loss of someone we love or know in the usual way. All Souls’
Day is a special time when we can remember a loved one or friend who is no longer with
us and, particularly this year, all those who have died in recent months.
This year, on All Souls’ Day, Sunday 1st November between 1.00pm and 4.00pm St Mary’s
church will be open and you are welcome inside to take a moment to reflect and pray and
light a candle for someone special. There will be a member of the ministry team present
too if you would like someone to pray with or for you.
This will replace our usual ‘Always Remembered’ Service this year.
If you are not able to come but would like us to light a candle in memory of someone please
contact Revd Richard (01843 821250).

Remembrance 2020

St Mary’s Church will sadly not be able to host the Parish Remembrance Service this year.
However we are keen to ensure that there is time and space for people to commemorate
and honour the service and sacrifice of the armed forces community.
The Church will be open on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November between 9.30-3.30pm.
You are welcome to come inside to pause and spend some time; and, if you wish, lay down
your poppy on the war memorial.

--------------------------------------
There will be an Act of Remembrance at the Cemetery War Memorial earlier in the day on
Sunday 8 November with limited members of the Royal British Legion, Parish Council, St
Mary’s Church and The Salvation Army. Due to current restrictions unfortunately, this will
not be open to the public.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning.
We will remember them.
