THANET COMMUNITY HOUSING

3 New Eco-Friendly homes for affordable rent in Minster?

There is a piece of land in Minster off St Mary’s Road that has planning permission for

3 small bungalows. It sits, concreted over, unloved and unused. It is owned by Thanet

District Council (TDC). There has also been talk of turning it into a car park.
Recently Thanet Community Housing were invited by TDC to look at the site to see if

we could build the bungalows for Minster residents. We have visited the site several

times and taken a builder to look at it too. This builder has experience of building

community projects on very tight budgets. He built The Llewellyn School at Quex Park. NORTHROP SERVICES

Your kind donations, in his memory, for the Neurological Department
at Canterbury Hospital, who were wonderful caring for him in his last
days, are gratefully received.

My Mum - Sue Woodhead
Mum was actively involved in delivering this magazine for a while, but
she was also the Captain of the Handbell Ringers at the St Mary’s
Church, which she loved and worked at tirelessly, rehearsing and
preparing music sheets etc.
It is with sadness that I inform you that Mum lost her long and
courageous battle with cancer on the 25th August at QEQMH. Her
funeral is taking place on the 22 September at Thanet Crematorium.
We have asked for any donations to be made to Viking Day Unit at
QEQM in her memory. They are a fantastic team and treated Mum for
many years.

The position of Treasurer and Secretary will be appointed by the committee. It is

WHAT 3 WORDS

What’s this we hear you ask? Well to the uninitiated it is a
mobile app to accurately pinpoint where anything or anyone
is to within 3 metres anywhere across the world. It’s great for

walkers/ramblers who may
need help from the
emergency services but are
unsure as to exactly where
they may be, it’s also good
for reporting the location of fly tipping, and anything else you can think
of where you may need to know exactly where you are.
Over 80% of services in the UK now use what3words, so this seems a
good opportunity to encourage you to download the what3words app
on your phone in case you need to call 999.
You can find a full list of those services that accept what3words here:
what3words.com/news/emergency/three-words-for-a-
faster-emergency-response.
You could also use what3words to report incidents with
organisations like National Grid, Network Rail and the
Environmental Agency:
what3words.com/report-incident-locations-efficiently.
The app is totally free to download and use, you can
download it on iOS or Android.

THE JAKE PHILPOTT MEMORIAL ROAD MARKINGS
‘RIDE TO REMEMBER’ After some recent gas works in Molineux Road the
yellow markings outside the school needed attention –
This year as everyone knows has been a year of these pictures show the result of that – seems sad the
changes for everyone, some good, but mostly months contractors couldn’t afford the little extra yellow marker
of worry and uncertainty. to renew the whole of those that were damaged!!
Our family weren’t sure if a bike ride, visiting pubs, Thanks to Karen Whybrow for the pictures
would be something people would want to do.
We decided that maybe just our very closest family
would still do it, but our wider family and close friends
were adamant that this wonderful yearly tribute to
Jake HAD to happen, so on Sunday 30th August, it
went ahead, a slightly smaller group (27 riders) set off
and completed a very windy 26 mile round trip.
Luckily the rain held off and we did get plenty of
sunshine too.
This year was no different and we had plenty of
laughter on this the 16th ride, that always is such a
great joy to do (of course socially distancing when
necessary !!)
As we couldn’t finish at ‘The Royal British Legion’ this
year, we ended at Mum’s (Cynthia’s) garden, which
luckily is large enough to put on a great ploughman’s
lunch for everyone. We were joined by more family,
young and old, and had a great time eating and
drinking long into the evening.
We were so glad that everyone wanted to make this
years bike ride, not only possible but, such great fun
under such strange circumstances.
Covid-19 was not going to stop us. Well done and
thank you all.
See you all, and hopefully many more next year for
another ‘Ride to Remember’.
From all the family.

NHS HEARING AID BATTERIES
Taking mid-morning tea with friends a few days ago the discussion moved
round to accessing our local surgery for hearing aid batteries, however it
appears local GP surgeries no longer offer this service.
The question was then asked “So where do we get them from now?”
The reply was that the surgery is telling patients, who enquire, they need
to go to either Westgate or Age Concern, but on later checking the
Internet it was found that most, if not all, of the local hearing aid clinics
are closed due to the present pandemic.

Further investigation however shows there is a possibility of obtaining
them from Hi-Kent in Canterbury, their office is open Monday – Friday,
9am- 4pm and they are at 46 Northgate, Canterbury, CT1 1BE, phone
01227 760 046
Web: hikent.org.uk Email: [email protected]

We are publishing this here in the hope it will save others a wasted call,
or trip, to the surgery only to find they need to go outside of the village

If you are unable to travel to Canterbury it is worth contacting Hi Kent

MY WAR YEARS by GWEN HIBBERT – 07938 104 594
UNEXPECTED FOLLOW UP

Gwen says; As a result of us printing her article ‘My War Years’ she
has received a letter from a Mr Ed Des Laurier who comes from
Vancouver B.C. Evidently, Ed has a friend in Margate who visited
someone in Minster where they read Gwen’s article and we believe
the Minster friend knows Gwen.
Gwen says she has nothing to go on but would like that person to
contact her on 821221 in order for her to find out more about Ed.
It seems he is the Grandson of one of the Canadians mentioned in
her article and she would so much like to meet him.
The letter Gwen received reads:
“Dear Mrs Hibbert, A friend of mine has an acquaintance in
Margate who read the Minster magazine, when visiting a buddy in
Minster, about Chartwell.
I was startled about the above as my Grand daddy was around
where you were, all those years ago, and asked me to visit Thirsk,
Coventry and ‘Chartwell’ if I ever visited the UK.
I’ll be passing through Dover which is just up the road from you –
so I thought I just might knock on your door.
Anyway, it goes without saying that Grand daddy survived and
always spoke well about everybody at ‘Chartwell’. “We” are all still
in Vancouver.
Good wishes from Ed Des Laurier”

So, in order to help Gwen with her quest, if you read this and you
are that resident then please do give Gwen a ring.

Winter Visitors

Although we’ve enjoyed a welcome late spell of warm
(hot!) summer weather, the shorter colder days of late
autumn and winter will soon be upon us. Nature has
continued its regular progress during the current
pandemic – and even thrived in the absence of the
usual levels of human activity as we’ve endured
varying levels of ‘lockdown’. Just down the road, at
Monkton Nature Reserve, we can see the signs of the changing seasons.

There appears to be a glut of fruit on many trees and shrubs; together with many
seeds that lack a tasty, colourful covering, these foods are vital for many birds
and mammals as they gradually lose the summer pickings of insect life that is
crucial for breeding success. Hawthorn trees seem to be particularly blessed with
masses of bright red berries, along with good crops of rowan, sloes, holly and
elderberry. Berry-laden trees have often been said to be a sign of a hard winter
to follow but are really an indication of a good spring/summer for another group
of organisms – more fruit has been produced by more insect activity that provides
greater pollination success. Nature responds rather than prepares!

We will soon be welcoming some winter visitors from
the north that will thrive on the autumn fruit bounty.
While familiar birds that rely on insects for food in the
summer (swallows, warblers) head south to Africa
where such food remains plentiful, others arrive from
Scandinavia, Russia and continental Europe – evading
harsher conditions and finding our hedgerows to their
liking, where they rapidly strip the fruits. Winter
thrushes are the most noticeable; the large Fieldfare with its striking chocolate-
brown patches and its smaller cousin, the Redwing, will soon form large flocks
on Thanet’s farmland. Some of our more recognisable birds are also
supplemented by arrivals from elsewhere; in our gardens, many of the Robins
and Blackbirds that we see will be continental migrants.

Our resident Robins, which are fiercely territorial, will
have to compete for food with these interlopers that are
often shyer than our garden friends as they are
woodland, rather than urban, dwellers. Male Robins
continue to sing throughout the winter, hoping to
establish territories in the New Year and offering a
welcome reminder of the sounds of spring and summer.

A season to remember…

All Souls Day – Sunday November 1st
St Mary’s Church Open for Prayer and Lighting a Candle

1.00pm-4.00pm

2020 has been a difficult year in so many ways and there have been times when we have
not been able to mourn the loss of someone we love or know in the usual way. All Souls’
Day is a special time when we can remember a loved one or friend who is no longer with
us and, particularly this year, all those who have died in recent months.
This year, on All Souls’ Day, Sunday 1st November between 1.00pm and 4.00pm St Mary’s
church will be open and you are welcome inside to take a moment to reflect and pray and
light a candle for someone special. There will be a member of the ministry team present
too if you would like someone to pray with or for you.
This will replace our usual ‘Always Remembered’ Service this year.
If you are not able to come but would like us to light a candle in memory of someone please
contact Revd Richard (01843 821250).

Remembrance 2020

St Mary’s Church will sadly not be able to host the Parish Remembrance Service this year.
However we are keen to ensure that there is time and space for people to commemorate
and honour the service and sacrifice of the armed forces community.
The Church will be open on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November between 9.30-3.30pm.
You are welcome to come inside to pause and spend some time; and, if you wish, lay down
your poppy on the war memorial.

--------------------------------------
There will be an Act of Remembrance at the Cemetery War Memorial earlier in the day on
Sunday 8 November with limited members of the Royal British Legion, Parish Council, St
Mary’s Church and The Salvation Army. Due to current restrictions unfortunately, this will
not be open to the public.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning.
We will remember them.
