NEW COVID-19 MASS VACCINATION CENTRE FOR THANET
A new Vaccination Centre, which is now open, has been created in the old SAGA building at Westwood Cross. The leading provider is Kent
Community Health NHS Foundation Trust supported by, and running alongside, existing GP Hubs at Minster Surgery PCN and Margate
Surgery. The service is available to all those aged 65 and over and appointments can be made in the normal way by calling 119.

MiINSTER SURGERY PCN COVID-19 VACCINATION PROGRAMME
This new facility will also benefit GP Practices by freeing up staff and enabling them to concentrate more fully on Primary care for all our
patients. We are very pleased to announce that by the end of February we will have vaccinated 98%-99% of all patients in the over 80
and over 70 age groups who responded to the invitation, and as a result, we will have vaccinated over 12,000 patients. We will now be
concentrating on those patients between the ages 18-64 who have been identified as being “high risk” and have received an invitation.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS!
We would like to apologise to all the residents of the village that have been affected by our vaccination programmes and the resultant
traffic congestion that has been caused from time to time. Thankfully now, with the new Vaccination Centre, village life can return to

normal!

APPOINTMENTS - OPEN AS USUAL!
We are of course open for business as usual, but if patients request a doctor’s appointment,
they will receive a telephone triage call first to help the GP to determine the correct need,
thus resulting in a safer more personalised approach.

PLEASE DON’T GET COMPLACENT
Even with the success of the vaccine roll out which now gives clear hope for the future, the
virus is still virulent and we are still in a National Lockdown, so please exercise caution,
ensure you follow the rules and for everyone’s safety:
Remember: “Wash Hands”- “Cover Face” - “Make Space” and stay safe!
And above all ‘PROTECT THE NHS’
* If you have any of the following symptoms:
New persistent cough; Loss of taste/smell; High temperature -Call 119 - book a test!
* If you have symptoms, tested positive or self-isolating:
PLEASE DO NOT VISIT THE SURGERY but call 111 if you require further assistance.
* Want to check on cases in your area? Download the NHS Covid Ap
* Returning from abroad? Visit gov.uk for the latest advice.
For Covid-19 symptoms or book a test call 119.

SURGERY CLOSURES - EASTER HOLIDAY
Please note the surgery will be closed on the following days:
Good Friday 2nd April and Easter Monday 5th April
Should you need to see a doctor outside normal hours please call the NHS 111 Service direct
by dialing 111 where you will receive non urgent confidential health advice and information
for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases, please dial 999 as normal.

REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS
Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you through these difficult times
and that all “Repeat Prescription Requests” are submitted to the surgery in good time to
allow for the increased demand, both at the surgery and at the various pharmacies, Also,
if your “MEDICATION REVIEW” is due during this period please ensure you make an
appointment in good time, to avoid further unnecessary delays.
Please note: Medication Reviews will be carried out by telephone.
Also: prescriptions can only be delivered to those patients who have been identified as
“Shielding”. If you have any concerns please contact the surgery direct on 821333

PATIENT GROUP MEETINGS
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we are currently holding our meetings using video conferencing,
however, if you have any issues you would like to raise or require further information on
any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200, Jeanne Lawrence on 821049
or email [email protected].

LETTER FROM KAREN (ATTWELLS)

I would like to thank everyone who came out to say goodbye to Clive on his last journey through the
village that he and his Mum and Dad had served for 69 years. It was very emotional and he would have
been overwhelmed and so surprised at how many people cared.

Jenny and I would also like to thank everyone for their kind words, cards, flowers, presents and for taking
the time to come and see us during our last week. After losing Clive and closing the shop we have been
on an emotional roller-coaster. You have all been so lovely and caring and we will miss you all so much.

So many people ask why I couldn’t keep Attwells open. I had always dreamt of keeping the shop and
extending the range of cards and gift wrap etc. However, when the chance came, I began to add up the
£1000’s that Clive had personally ploughed into the business over the last 5 years, the out of hours
shopping I did to provide a selection, the hours a day I was putting in leaving the house at 5.45am getting
home at 5.30pm (normal shop hours) working 7 days a week and still the business was running at a loss.
Yes, changes had to be made. Unfortunately, Inheritance Tax is 40% so I will be left with the building and
nothing to fund it with. So, I could get a loan to repair any structural damage, refit the shop and stock it. If
we kept Newspapers that’s a 7 day a week job 364 days a year. Also, paying to have our papers
delivered, Shop Insurance, Wages, a new till and card payment, new blinds, Water, Gas, Electricity bills,
Pension payments, PAYE, telephone, alarm system, cardboard and plastic removals, bank charges, loan
repayments the list goes on. We stopped playing the radio end of Jan as this cost over £200 a year.
Also, all utilities were charged at a higher price to businesses. So many out goings that people don’t
realise. There is a very High risk of still running at a loss, running myself into the ground and ending up
retirement age with a large loan hanging round my neck. I have given my best years and tears to the
shop; it’s been my life and I’ve loved it but I realised it was never going to work.
In the days when we had 14 paper rounds, 2 vans delivering to Way, Acol and Monkton we had a very
large footfall and when people came in to pay their papers, they would buy other things as well. Many
didn’t drive and buses were few so people shopped in the village. However, times change. You can buy
a paper anywhere or read online, we used to sell 1000’s of cigarettes a day now most have given up,
magazines and comics were a form of entertainment now you have, phones and iPads. Then we have
online and supermarkets. Small shops like Attwells are no longer a necessity to a majority of people 364
days a year. In this modern world a lot of people do not have time anymore to walk down the shops due
to other commitments, if they come down in the car and can’t park, they can go off and go somewhere
else, also you can buy everything you need in one place now. What you can’t get is that friendly chat
about the weather and personal problems people are going through, debates, advice, sharing stories and
information, Someone, to help, someone to sell raffle tickets, event tickets, collect for charities, drop off
points in fact anything we could do we would and of course those very important Gravy Bones. Yes, we
were the hub of the village but we just didn’t have enough customers to cover our costs. We can’t thank
our regular customers, whether you were every day, once a week or once a month enough. You have
helped keep us going and made our jobs the best we could have ever wished for.
There is not a flat upstairs it’s a bedroom, a bathroom and the rest were used for storage so it can’t be
rented or lived in without again, a lot of money spent on it. Also, the only way up is from stairs in the
middle of the shop so cannot be used separately to the shop.
I know it’s sad and a great loss to many in the village but not as much as it is to myself and Jenny. It’s
been our daily routine for 40-50 years. We’ve made so many friends we will miss you all greatly but we
will be around to stop and have a chat.
I will still be doing all I can for the events etc that I ran from Attwells. I also have the same contacts and
connections so please, if you would have asked me in Attwells then you can still ask me now. If I can
help I will.
Take care everyone and nothing proves it more than what has happened after years of warnings.
Support your village shops or you will lose them
Keep safe and well
Karen

COMMUNITY WARDEN’S
REPORT

Well, it looks like Spring is in the air
and we have a road map out of
lockdown which is fantastic news,
as I know many people and
businesses have suffered because of lockdown. I
hope post lockdown we continue to look after
each other and to appreciate the key workers
who have kept us going.

But as lockdown slowly ends, we need to be
aware that the scammers and fraudsters will also
be out so, if you have been waiting to get work
done on the house or garden or anything else for
that matter please don’t go with the “helpful”
person knocking at your door who just happens
to be in the area!
Instead use a trusted trades person, it’s an ideal
time to support local businesses,
recommendations are a good start or find
someone using ‘K.C.C. TRADING STANDARDS
CHECKED’ this is run by K.C.C. and has only
approved and checked traders also remember to
get a few quotes and get those quotes in writing!

Thanks for reading, I hope that as lockdown

comes to an end over the next months, I’ll be

able to see more of you out and

about but let’s not rush, keep to the

rules and let’s make this lockdown

the last!
