Captured Ships Collection
The work in this collection arose from research in the National archive concerning ships captured during the Anglo-Dutch wars. The
collection consists of works painted using pigments that were in the holds of the ships, and the most common pigment was indigo,
captured during transatlantic trade routes. The reason for choosing this period to research is that it has resonance with the political
instability that we are experiencing now, and the emblems in this work of sea gyre, Privateers, lost agreements and fog and obscured
views feel particularly pertinent.

The piece Eendraght is accompanied by a peace offering in the form of an undelivered personal letter that was also in the cargo. When
the piece sells a copy of this letter will be given to the buyer and the artist commits to teams the letter to people with the same family
name in the area to which it was intended in Paris in the hope that it reaches the relatives of the original family. Eendraght is an old
Dutch word for agreement or accord.

Artist’s Statement

Sarah Needham’s work is concerned with the material trace of human interaction and trade left by pigments globally across time. Her
work consists of research into particular geographic or historic places and events. These are chosen for their resonance with the now.
The pigments used in a single collection are determined by the specificity of this research.

The form of the work is the creation of abstract spaces made on a flat surface with hand- made oil paints from pigments specified,
creating spaces to fall into, to get a little lost in and to remember.

Technical specifications: all work is finished with a UV protective varnish to ensure longevity of the colour, and all
paint is hand made from high quality pigments and oil painting media. Copper areas are varnished to prevent
corrosion. Work is available in hand mixed acrylic for the purposes of speedy commissions.
