B-BBEE Level 1 retained against
new Construction Sector Codes

We are ecstatic about Mariswe’s successful retention of its
Level 1 B-BBEE Contributor status in its first audit under the
Amended Construction Sector Codes of Good Practice. The
certificate was awarded on 23 November 2018.

The latest submission was prepared internally as was the
previous audit in November 2017, when Mariswe (then
UWP) achieved its first Level 1 certification. Although it was
not easy, we are pleased to have taken this route because it
has helped us to learn. There was a lot of anxiety as we did
not know what to expect from the new Codes, but we took
baby steps and we’re happy with the result.

Ownership

Mariswe’s shareholding strategy has changed in the
interests of sustainability. New shareholders are becoming
younger, more diverse in terms of race and gender and
we are also striving to improve numbers of disabled
shareholders. The requirement for professional registration
for shareholders in the built environment in line with the
Codes remains essential for the business.

Management Control

Mariswe has also changed its management structure,
with a new organogram providing clear opportunities for
succession in technical or managerial streams. This removes
the glass ceiling created by a dated inflexible structure and
avoids the inevitable resignation of employees who feel they
have reached the ceiling.

Our Board is truly balanced not only in strategic outlook, well, and this was no accident. We have structured contracts

As a further short-term solution, another contract is due for

Mariswe went on to seek longer term solutions via the surface

of which the proposed new Zachtevlei Dam is the most viable.

Localised rehabilitation gets
under way on Stellenbosch roads

The Western Cape government has appointed Mariswe for the
design and supervision of a 16-month, R99,2 million project
to upgrade, rehabilitate and maintain major roads in the
Stellenbosch area.

The contract covers about 17 km of road in areas of high need on six
routes in and around Stellenbosch. The appointed contractor, Shar
Civils, will be responsible for providing EPWP work opportunities,
developing emerging contractors and contributing to economic
empowerment within the local communities.

Work began in October 2018 and will involve reconstruction,
widening, realignment and resurfacing of selected sections of the
identified roads, as well as regravelling of farm access roads for
use as local deviations.

Roads are being upgraded in the Stellenbosch area.

200 Km of new road markings

“ The repainting of road markings has significantly improved night time and wet
weather visibility for motorists on these highly trafficked routes, which also carry
high percentages of truck traffic.

In June 2016 SANRAL appointed Mariswe for a three-year term to
assess its road network in the Western Cape and compile short
lists of roads with poor quality road markings. The routes involved
are the N1, N2 and N7.

As part of Mariswe’s brief, four road marking contracts have been
let and completed to date, including the repainting of more than
200 km of national roads and the installation of new road studs
valued at about R20 million. Another two road marking contracts
are currently being prepared by Mariswe for tender in early 2019.

Water treatment study for
Lesotho’s Letseng Mine

At 3 100 m above sea-level, Letseng in Lesotho is the highest 29
diamond mine in the world.

The mine is located in the catchment area of the well-known
Katse Dam and water released or run-off from the mine flows
directly into the dam. The Katse Dam forms part of the Lesotho
Highlands Water Project, developed in partnership between
the governments of Lesotho and South Africa, which delivers
water to the Vaal River System in South Africa. The quality of
the water is extremely important and strict parameters are
enforced by the authorities.

Blasting operations at Letseng result in the formation of nitrate
which rapidly dissolves in water. The nitrate concentration in the
run-off from the mine far exceeds the allowable concentration
and Letseng Diamonds has tested various technologies to
reduce the nitrate levels in the water. These investigations led
to the construction and operation of a pilot scale bioremediation
treatment plant at the mine.

The pilot plant achieved up to 95% nitrate reduction and Letseng
has recently appointed Mariswe to investigate the feasibility of
upscaling the plant to handle all nitrate rich water produced by
the mine.

Work started in mid-August 2018 and is expected to be
completed by April 2019.

Beneficiaries of NURTURE A GIRL at Thembinkosi Special School in

advice and counselling.
Several programmes and activities were arranged as part of
the initiative in 2018. Learners completed two-day SANCA Peer
Education and Training Courses on substance abuse and were
given the opportunity to attend depression and anxiety workshops.

All the schools received book donations and Mariswe has
partnered with the Schools Reading Roadshow Team to introduce
the NURTURE A GIRL learners to the work of local authors.
Stationery donations kept the beneficiaries kitted out with the
essentials for the year and Mariswe staff got the girls involved in
planting fruit trees at their schools on Arbour Day.

Beneficiaries were invited to join Mariswe’s annual CESA Job
Shadow Days and various classes including computer skills, arts
and crafts, cooking and knitting were offered to the learners over
the year.

In 2019 we hope to expand the programmes offered to our
beneficiaries and particular focus will be placed on support with
maths, which is currently a challenge.
