mental health.”

e SEPTA Summer Fun Program is a wonderful
program established by our Somers Special Education
PTA (SEPTA) to provide students with a “camp like”
experience. It follows the LIFE philosophy of the district
by providing an inclusive program open to all Somers
students. Somers is fortunate to have this program, par-
ticularly for the Special Education population that at-
tend extended school year services through the Somers
School District as it has exposed them to sports, dance,
art, cooking, music, yoga and cake decorating. e ele-
mentary program for grades K-5 is additionally unique in
that every camper has a “buddy” of mostly middle school
and high school students who volunteer to spend the af-
ternoon. e volunteers serve as peer role models while
providing meaningful social interactions. e middle and

e highlight for us was at the end of the program

when some of the children from the upper grades took

the “challenge”one step further. ey created a one-of-a-

kind Challenge Island inspired Fair. Drums were beaten

and music played while younger children participated in

experiential fun, all designed and produced by the high

school students. Having the opportunity to witness how

Challenge Island sparked their creativity and in turn

empowered their peers was an incredibly proud moment

for us. e culmination of the “Summer Fun Fair” was

a true testament of why we love what we do. It was a

beautiful, immersive learning experience for everyone.

A perfect day for us is seeing that glow and excitement

in children when they persevere together and realize
