A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DEAR CHAMBER MEMBERS AND MAHOPAC-CARMEL RESIDENTS:
The Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce is happy to present our 2019
Annual Directory.
We hope you will use this as a resource guide for the small businesses that help support
this community as well as a tool to discover more about the community you live in.
Our goal was to have this directory represent the Mahopac and Carmel community and
chamber members, and for it to be useful throughout the year for neighbors, friends and
visitors.
We encourage you to keep the directory visible at your place of business or home so
that it may help promote our town and the businesses that support our community. Please
consider the importance of supporting local businesses specifically in Putnam County as it will
ultimately help the overall local economy.
On behalf of The Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce and its members, I thank you for your ongoing support.
Regards,
Michael Celestino
Executive Director, Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce

2018 CHAMBER BUSINESS HONOREES

The Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce recognized three local business leaders, whose business and volunteering efforts have made a
positive impact in the Mahopac-Carmel area, at its annual Business Person of the Year awards dinner. “With people having to focus more time on their

business or their career than in the past, it takes a special kind of person to work all day and then contribute to the community as well,” said Chamber
CEO Michael Celestino. “The people who are being honored have selflessly given of themselves to make the Mahopac-Carmel community better.”

booster tank. This vehicle still serves today as a reminder of how
22 | The Greater Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce | 2019-2020 Directory this all began.

The 1940s were a time of growth, which was cut short by the
outbreak of WWII. As the war came to a conclusion, young men
of the armed services arrived home and took their place on the
hose line and the Falls Fire Department took on a new life.

A second fire truck was added to the firefighting arsenal in
1946—a 300 GPM Chevrolet army surplus 4X4. With men and
trucks ready to fight fires, a means of alerting the members to a fire
call was needed. Doug Benjamin built the first electric siren allow-
ing the old gong and sledgehammer to be retired.

In 1950, a committee formed to purchase a new pumper. The
acquisition of the new truck highlighted the need for space and
the old two-room school/firehouse was beginning to show its age.
Consideration was given to an addition to the building along with
a remodeling of the engine room. Carmel architect John J. Mc-
Nulty designed a new building and Mahopac contractor Richard
Othamer constructed what was to become Mahopac Falls Fire
Department Station 1. The building was opened for use in 1961.

In the early ‘60s, the town experienced tremendous growth, re-
sulting in the need of additional services to the community. To
accomplish this, another vehicle was needed and a committee set
forth to purchase a new pumper.

Only 10 years after the dedication of the Main Station located
at Brook and School streets, the pinch for more room began to be
felt. This was accomplished with the purchase of property and the
construction of Station Two at Housemen Corners.

The ‘70s saw continued growth in the size and shape of the
community. With this growth came the need for additional and
specialized services. First on board was the certification of a scuba
rescue team in 1971.

Until this time, ambulance service had been provided by the Ma-
hopac Volunteer Fire Department. It was time for the MFVFD
to provide emergency medical service to their district. A 1973

missioners of the district adopted a motion to incorporate the
Carmel Fire Department. Moreover, on Sept. 23, 1915, Justice
Joseph Morschauser of the Supreme Court of New York, ex-
ecuted a certi cate of incorporation and the Carmel Fire De-
partment became o cially recognized by the state as an o cial

re department.
On Nov. 10, 1915, the Town Board gave its consent to the
department and by Nov. 23, 1915 the directors submitted a list
of names that they considered eligible to become active mem-
bers of the department. Additionally, the department’s rst an-
nual meeting was held on Jan. 3, 1916 whereby the rst o cers
of the department were elected. However, prior to this meeting,
on Dec. 31, 1915 the newly appointed Carmel re ghters wel-
comed the arrival of two pieces of apparatus that were shipped
via a train box car from Anderson, Indiana. In fact, Mr. P.G.
Howe, the designer and engineer responsible for the design and
manufacturing of the apparatus, traveled to Carmel to ensure
their safe arrival.
Today, the original Buckeye stands strong and tall within
the Carmel Fire Department walls and can be viewed by the
residents as it stands at the front of the rehouse looking out
towards Route 52.
In November 1949, the Carmel Fire Department Ladies
Auxiliary was created and later became to be known as the
Carmel Fire Department Auxiliary. e Auxiliary has provided
a signi cant amount of inspiration to the re department pa-
rades, as it wins prestigious marching trophies at various county
parades.

LAURA SMITH BECOMES FIRST FEMALE
SERGEANT IN CARMEL PD HISTORY

BY BOB DUMAS, MAHOPAC NEWS

Growing up in Mahopac, Laura Smith had no intention of be-

coming a cop. In fact, the 2002 MHS grad had designs on a career as

a physical therapist. She graduated magna cum laude from Towson

University with a degree in athletic training.

But things don’t always go as planned. After hearing that the Car-

mel Police Department had an opening, she decided to throw her

hat in the ring. In 2007, she got the job, went through the training

and became the first female officer in the history of the department.

Some 10 years later, Smith was promoted by the Town Board, be-

coming the first female sergeant for the Carmel PD.

“I never thought I’d be a police officer,” said Smith. “When I was

17, I joined the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department right after

9/11 (where she held the ranks of lieutenant and captain). My mom

was an ER nurse at Putnam Hospital Center and my dad was vol-

unteer fire chief. My brother was a sergeant for the Kent police, so

civic duty was a big part of my family growing up. I went to college Smith’s husband, Brian Lena, pins on her sergeant’s badge.

and was going to be a physical therapist, but this [opportunity] came

around and I thought, ‘Hey, just do it!’”

Having been a volunteer firefighter, Smith said it was a reasonable

transition to becoming a police officer.

“You do a lot of the same things,” she said. “You care for people’s

property and for people when they are hurt and sick. And I like be-

ing out and about in the community. I took the test and did really,

really well.”

Being the first woman on the force, Smith said she knew that she

would have to prove herself.

“It was strange at first,”she said.“There were some who welcomed

me and there were some who were uncertain. Right off the bat, I

had to prove I could hang with the boys physically and personality

wise—that they didn’t have to act [differently] around me and that

I was one of them. After a few months, I think they realized it was

going to be OK; it wasn’t the worst thing that was going to happen.

But when I put on the uniform, I am not a female police officer, just

a police officer.” Smith is sworn in by Town Supervisor Ken Schmitt.

Nonetheless, Smith said that as a woman she believes she brings PHOTOS: BOB DUMAS
