A Time Than Y

No one can deny that the past few months have been trying and difficult. It has been hard to see the good during chaos and
confusion. We need to nudge ourselves to see the “silver linings” that have come out of this and how we have been able to
adapt to the “new normal.” As Somers Lions, we are called upon to help the community wherever there is a need that we can
address. We have been astounded by the love and support that the town of Somers and its residents have shown throughout
it all. Most impressive has been the support of the Somers Food Pantry. To date, thousands of dollars have been raised for
providing food for those in Somers who need it most. The need unfortunately continues, despite our efforts to curb it. We
wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has donated food, supplies, and money to let hungry men, women and children
eat during this time of crisis. We want to thank all those wonderful people of Somers who have stepped up to do things like
sewing and distributing facemasks, cooking and delivering meals, creating fundraising campaigns and so much more.

Two initiatives stand out for us. One is Ricky Mancini Jr., a Somers graduate, who has launched “Operation Face Shield”
and continued support of the Somers Food Pantry. “Operation Face Shield” was featured in the Somers Record. Mr. Mancini
is using 3D printing to create PPEs for hospitals and first responders. The Somers Lions have donated $500 to help support
his efforts. A Go Fund Me page has been dedicated to his continued efforts, https://gf.me/u/xyhtmn if you would also like to
help.

The Lions Club will also continue to support donations to the Somers Food Pantry at St. Luke’s. Donations to the food
pantry can be made through the Lions Website, www.somerslionsclub.org and will be matched up to $2,500.

Of course, there are more initiatives and more silver linings. We offer our heartfelt thank you to everyone who has stepped
up to help during this time, when it’s so easy to be angry or feel defeated. We thank all essential workers, first responders,
medical staff, teachers, and everyone who has done their part to make things just a little bit easier during a difficult time.
Thank you all, Somers, for your continued support.

The Somers Lions stand by to help the community, support the Town of Somers, support The Somers Record, and help our
neighbors. We could not do this without the support of our very generous sponsors and the Town of Somers. Please remember
to patronize all local small businesses. We will continue to help in any way we can. For those in need, please reach out to
Lion Gary Forbes at [email protected] or call (914) 299-9689. Many of our members are standing by to help.

Route 202 Suite #3 Somers, NY 10589 Nelle’s search began with people who wanted to re-home their

cats as opposed to adopting from a shelter. Her odyssey started

in Yorktown where she drove around and around unable to locate

the house. She nally had to give up.

e next took her to Queens, another unfamiliar location.

However, thanks to Google Maps, she found her way. Actually,

she felt as if she’d stumbled into the Twilight Zone…curved

streets identi ed by numbers rather than names; numbers on

houses that weren’t consistent; confusing street signs. Eventu-

ally, she located the cat who was being fostered by a volunteer,

were no cell towers, she gave up and went home. However, not

to be daunted, she decided to try again the next day. is time

she located the house where the volunteers kept several felines in

a room of their own. My sister subsequently learned that these

cats came from a shelter in Georgia and the process of bringing

homeless cats from southern shelters for northern placement was

common practice. Unfortunately, this didn’t work out either.

Almost deciding to give up the search, my sister answered

one more email. It was from a woman wanting to re-home her

ex-boyfriend’s cat whom he had also abandoned. She had a cat

of her own and couldn’t handle both alone. ey were located

in New York City’s East Village and Nelle asked her son and his

family to accompany her. It was a small narrow building with no

elevator and incredibly steep steps leading to an apartment on

the fth oor.

My nephew suggested that he take the carrier and bring the

cat down so his mother wouldn’t have to climb the stairs. Since

Nelle had already seen a picture of ‘Ollie’ on the internet and

thought she looked cute, she decided to take her home. Wrong

decision! Remember, the cat chooses its master and since they

hadn’t been face-to-face so to speak, they couldn’t know Ollie’s

decision. Also, unbeknownst to my sister, Ollie had bonded with

the other cat and probably felt confused and deserted.

Which brings us to now. My sister has kept the cat for the past

two months during which time Ollie has made her home in the

corner of a closet behind several coats. She comes out at night,

after Nelle is asleep, to eat the gourmet food o ered and use the

litter box. When, after a month, my sister tried to cajole her out

with some treats, Nelle had her hand bitten and needed to be on

antibiotics for ten days. Fortunately, the owner agreed to take

Ollie back, but the coronavirus rudely interfered. My sister now

has a cat who lives in a closet and bites the hand that feeds it! Just

illustrates the old adage, “no good deed goes unpunished.”

A buzzer-beating goal by Gabby

Rosenzweig gave Somers a 10-9 win

over Yorktown in the Section 1 Class

B nals, clinching the Tuskers’ second

consecutive section title.

Despite being the defending cham-

pions, Somers came into the game

having dropped both regular season

games against the Huskers.

With 3 seconds left on the clock,

and the score deadlocked at 9-9, over-

time seemed inevitable. But Rosenz-

weig, a junior, moved in, avoided three

Yorktown defenders, and red a shot

past Husker goalie Nikki Prestiano

for the game-winning goal as time

expired.

“Oh my God, de nitely the biggest

goal of my life,”Rosenzweig said at the

time. “My sister (Livy) looked at me

and said you are nishing this shot. It

motivated me to see all my teammates

around me and I knew this was for my

seniors. I’ve grown up with these girls,

game to make it 7-6.

Casey Du gave Yorktown a two-goal lead at 8-6.

With less than 6 minutes left to play, the Tuskers went to work as the Rosen-

zweig sisters teamed up for a goal with Gabby setting up Livy to make it 8-7.

Sydney Ericson then scored a goal o an assist from Englert to tie it up at

8-8 with 4:36 left to play. Du responded with another goal to give Yorktown

the lead again at 9-8 with 2:42 left to play.

Now it was Izzy LaRocca’s turn to shine for the Tuskers as she answered

back less than a minute later scoring a goal o another assist from Gabby to tie

it up with just 2:09 left to play.
