Six weeks later, Cuomo issued an executive order for-

Residents ll the halls of North Salem’s nursing homes with colorful paintings

BY KATHERINE BORCHERT
STAFF WRITER

A group of artistically inclined residents has come together to
bring paintings with loving messages to North Salem’s nursing
homes.

Mary Molina, aided by Kurt Guldan, president of the North
Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, had the idea of providing
paintings to nursing home residents because visitors are not al-
lowed in their buildings in the e ort to stop the spread of the
coronavirus.

“He [Guldan] goes up to the nursing homes fairly often and
he was noticing that COVID-19 has been really hard on them,”
Molina said.

Guldan reached out to Molina with the idea as a way to
spread some cheer among North Salem’s most vulnerable resi-
dents.

Each week, Molina and her family create paintings to bring
to the ambulance corps, which brings them to nursing homes
and distributes them among the residents.

So far, Molina and her family have made Cinco de Mayo-
themed paintings, Mother’s Day paintings and stained glass
window paintings. Molina has also been planning future themes
such as the seaside, Father’s Day and Fourth of July.

Word of the paintings spread through the grapevine and local
artist Nina Bertolino began creating and collecting paintings
for the residents, as well.To date, they have collected 137 paint-
ings from 17 people to donate.

“I’m very hopeful that these bright and happy paintings will
put a smile on these elderly people who are without contact
from family and friends,” Bertolino said. “I hope that they will
know from these paintings that they are loved and thought of
even though they can’t be visited.”

Bertolino teaches a water color class at the Ruth Keeler Me-
morial Library that she’s since taken online while the library
remains closed.

Molina said that being able to spread a little joy is wonderful
and she appreciates the time spent with her family while they
work on this project together.

“It gives us a purpose for that day, which can sometimes be
hard when there’s not a lot of things to do because you’re stuck
at home,” Molina said. “So, as rewarding as it is, I hope that it’s
rewarding for the residents. It’s even more so rewarding for us
to have something to be able to do.”

At the end, each student holds up a handmade sign with words that
collectively spell out: “ e Shorter It Will Be Is Up To You And Me.”

“Ultimately, staying home is the answer to ending the spread of this

What is Social Distancing?

Social Distancing is one of the most effective ways to avoid coronavirus infection. It simply means
avoiding crowded settings, mass gatherings and maintaining a 6-foot distance from others when possible.

We know that this may mean missing an event you’ve been looking forward to, or breaking your weekly
routine, but it will also protect you and those around you.
Northwell Health is built for situations just like this
and we’ll continue to share facts and tips in the
days to come. Because knowledge is contagious too.

North Salem Republicans
contribute to food drive

e following is from the North Salem Republicans:

e North Salem Republican Committee has made a donation to GoFundMe page
set up by the North Salem Lions Club. Knowing there is a need to help fellow citizens,
who through no fault of their own, have been furloughed from their jobs due to CO-
VID-19, the Republican Committee made a donation to help bring in food and other
necessities to those in need. Food from the county food bank, in addition to other ne-
cessities, are being distributed through the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

e group’s core principle is that individuals are the bases of our society and that we
can take care our ourselves with, when required, minimal help from government. It
is also believed that the most responsible government is that which is closest to the
people. It is with this in mind the Republicans felt it was their obligation to contribute
to the fund set up to help our neighbors. e Republican Committee encourages other
groups in town and individuals who have not already done so to make a contribution
to the GoFundMe page set up by the North Salem Lions. Government can only go
so far to help us. We have to be responsible for ourselves and help those within our
community in need. To donate, visit https://ca.gofundme.com/f/north-salem-lions-

Opportunity
Is Knocking.

Historically low inventory levels in the area, paired with
an abundance of buyers, make it an opportune time for
sellers to put their home on the market. Virtual
showings and safety guidelines make it possible.

Do not wait. Demand is high and buyers are
looking to move now.

ABSENTEE BALLOT UPDATE

PRIMARY ELECTION

Absentee ballots for the June 23d Primary Election will now be mailed automatically
to all qualified voters. This is a new development since my last ad. Registered
Democrats can choose between two candidates for District Attorney and five
candidates for the 93d State Assembly District seat vacated by David Buchwald,
who is running for US Congress. As a reminder, my name will not appear on the
primary ballot because I have no democratic challenger. Please vote for me
in the general election in November.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION AND BUDGET VOTE

School board elections and budget votes will now take place on June 9, 2020.
Voting will be by absentee ballot only. The North Salem Central School District will
mail absentee ballots to all qualified voters, together with a postage paid return
envelope. Our schools need our support now more than ever.

2020 CENSUS

There is still time to complete the 2020 Census. Over the next decade, the 2020
Census data will be used to make critical decisions about the funding our community
receives, how our community plans for the future, and our representation in
government. Every person should be counted! Do your part and participate by

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT – COLE JEFFERY

Lax captain enjoys
the outdoors

BY BRIAN MARSCHHAUSER
SPORTS EDITOR

North Salem senior Cole Je ery has played for four years on the
varsity lacrosse team, the last two as captain. e senior leader is
keeping his spirits high despite the canceled season.

“I’m happy to say this is the rst season that North Salem lacrosse
has gone undefeated!” Je ery said, jokingly.

How are you getting through this period of social distancing? Cole Jeffery has maintained a positive outlook in the face of adversity.
What are you doing to keep busy? Cole Jeffery, right, on the faceoff

I’ve been getting outside a lot—hiking and shing with friends— Cole Jeffery carries the ball. PHOTOS COURTESY OF COLE JEFFERY
staying 6 feet apart! When I’m bored, I’ll play Xbox and eat.

When did you start playing lacrosse and what got you started?
I started playing lacrosse in eighth grade. I ran spring track the
year before and realized that running in circles is not my thing. My
friends played lacrosse, so I bought a cheap stick from Target and it
soon became my favorite sport.
What jersey number do you wear and is there any signi cance
behind it?
I’ve always worn No. 18. It’s just my lucky number.
What is your favorite sports memory from your time at North
Salem?
At one of my rst lacrosse games as a freshman, we played Our
Lady of Lourdes. One of their players started a ght with our goalie
and the next thing I saw was half our team clear the bench and rush
the eld. I remember thinking, “Is this what lacrosse is going to be
like?” We paid for it when our coach had us do sprints the entire next
practice.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what
have you learned from them?
My coach, CJ Fleming, has turned me into the lacrosse player that
I am today. I wouldn’t be as good as I am without his instruction. And
North Salem graduate James Buzzetto, who played LSM (long-stick
mid elder), the position I play now. He taught me a few tips and
tricks and sold me my rst D-pole (defense lacrosse shaft).
Do you have any pre-game rituals?

e seniors—all three of us—just hang out and get in the zone.
What are your post-high school plans, athletically and
academically?
I plan on attending the University of Utah, where I’ll be majoring
in outdoor fun! I might play club team, and who knows, maybe I’ll be
a D-1 walk-on. e world is full of possibilities!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I’d like to be able to talk to my lazy dog, so I know what she’s
thinking all the time. And also, so I can ask her to get me Dr. Peppers
from the fridge!
What is something about yourself people would be surprised to
learn?
My favorite cereal is Fruit Loops.
What place would you most like to visit?
I’d like to visit the Redwood Forests in California and drive through
a Redwood tree in my car.
What is your favorite place to eat locally?
Peach Lake Market. Shout out to Rini!
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
I like Instagram just because I can keep scrolling through it and
not get bored.
Are you currently binging anything?
I’m not binging anything right now, but I’m open for suggestions.
For a young athlete growing up in the North Salem school
district, what would you tell them about the experience of being
on the lacrosse team and why should they go out for it?
If you’re looking to be a part of a team and brotherhood, then the
lacrosse team is where to nd it. You’ll learn a lot from the great
coaching sta , and you get to let out some aggression on the eld!

Sports community collects essential items

The donations filled dozens of bags. Volunteers accept donations from the North Salem community. Non-perishable food and
other essential items were
collected last week by North
Salem’s Athletic Department
and Booster Club to distribute
to the community’s most
vulnerable populations.

e drop-o event ran from
1 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 11,
at the North Salem Ambulance
Corps building on Daniel Road.

“Our spring sports season may
be canceled, but we can still show
our North Salem Tiger spirit,”
read a yer promoting the event.
A second drop-o event was
held at the same location the
following Monday (May 18).

Community members were
encouraged to drop o “pantry
items” (soups, canned vegetables
and fruits, cereal, pasta) and
“baby items” (diapers, food,
wipes, formula).

North Salem’s children were
also encouraged to create cards
and drawings to accompany
these deliveries, some of which
will make their way to nursing-
home residents.

e event was coordinated
by the North Salem Middle
School/High School Athletic
Department and the North
Salem Booster Club in
cooperation with the town
of North Salem and its rst
responders.
