“D ’t judge eac

-Robert Louis Stevenson

Rebirth and renewal - terms often associated with Spring. These words take on extra significance during this uncertain
time, when the whole world has turned upside down. It might be hard to imagine new beginnings, as we are still in the midst
of an unpredictable storm that has hovered over us for months. We are left feeling vulnerable and powerless in many facets of
our lives.

The power of planting can be restorative during times of uncertainty. With care and attention, there will almost always be
a regeneration, as well as a new beginning. The planting of seeds, annuals, perennials, shrubs and vegetables can be a joyful
exercise. Now, more than ever, joy is fundamental to our spirit.

The New York Times ran an article about Victory Gardens - a movement that began during World War I and continued
through WWII, in which Americans were called on to grow food in whatever spaces they could – rooftops, fire escapes, empty
lots and backyards. The movement maintained that “there is nothing more valuable than self-sufficiency, than working a
little land, no matter how small, and harvesting your own eggplant and tomatoes.” Vegetable growers know this to be true.
There is great satisfaction in picking cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots from your own garden. Victory Gardens served as
an important element in the United States during WWII as families were encouraged to can their own vegetables in order to
save commercial canned goods for the troops. Through the years, home canning of fruits and vegetables diminished in post
war America. Homemade jams and jellies found at farm stands and in households today are a tradition carried on from those
Victory Gardens of the past.

While we may not be facing the dire food shortages of previous wartime eras, we are currently encountering frustrating
trips to the grocery store, finding ourselves standing amidst sparsely stocked shelves and produce bins, leaving us to rethink
our meal plans and preparation. It is an oddly unsettling feeling. Taking the time to cultivate and nurture your own garden
can provide a feeling of accomplishment and instill a sense of order as you care for something other than yourself, your
children, parents, grandparents or grandchildren.

We are fortunate to live in Somers - a rural town and community that respects open spaces, large lots and townhomes
with outdoor areas. Let’s reinvigorate our lives, dig deep in the earth and cultivate. Whether you are partial to impatiens,
pansies or petunias, cucumbers, tomatoes or peppers, our local nurseries are open and ready to assist in selecting your flowers,
vegetables and plants. Please support them as they are an integral part of our community.
