Schoolhouse Theater mourns founder Leandra ‘Lee’ Pope

BY JODI WEINBERGER
EDITOR

e Schoolhouse eater on Friday, April 3, shared

with the community that its owner and founder Lean-

dra “Lee” Pope, 84, has died.

In an email, the theater’s artistic director Bram Lewis

wrote a tribute to Pope, who in 2018 received the Arts

Westchester Lifetime Arts Community award.

Under her direction, e Schoolhouse eater has

become a landmark home for the arts in Westchester

County.

Pope transformed the old elementary school build-

ing in Croton Falls into the arts center in 1983, turning

classrooms into galleries and studio spaces.

“As dark as the world was two weeks ago, I’ve moved

to a new shade of midnight,”

Lewis said. “It’s my bittersweet

duty to announce the death of

our founder and owner, Leandra Lee Pope surrounded by the Schoolhouse Theater community
‘Lee’ Pope. ‘Bitter’ because it just

is and though quite old, her pass-

ing was sudden and unexpected.

And, ‘sweet’ because anytime I

can talk about Lee, the dopamine-

neuro transmitters re up in my

brain and a smile lights up across

my face and my being. As the old

American standard has it, if they

ask me, I could write a book.”

Lewis said Pope died surround-

ed by her family “after a brief ill-

ness.”

“Lee Pope’s life and legacy will

always be intertwined in the phys-

ical reality of e Schoolhouse

What is Social Distancing?

Social Distancing is one of the most effective ways to avoid coronavirus infection. It simply means
avoiding crowded settings, mass gatherings and maintaining a 6-foot distance from others when possible.

We know that this may mean missing an event you’ve been looking forward to, or breaking your weekly
routine, but it will also protect you and those around you.
Northwell Health is built for situations just like this
and we’ll continue to share facts and tips in the
days to come. Because knowledge is contagious too.

Facts and guidelines related to coronavirus are constantly evolving. The facts contained here are Northwell’s best judgment at time of publication.
