Welcome

The origins of the ‘Grand Tour’
can be traced back to the days of
coach and horses. But when the
automobile first redefined grand
touring in the 1920s, Bentley
drove the change. Our founder,
W.O. Bentley, designed cars for
long journeys on the fast roads
of continental Europe – the fact
that they also dominated
endurance racing was a bonus.

The R-Type Continental of 1952
and the Continental GT of 2003
were both Bentleys that set new
benchmarks for their time. Now it’s
the turn of the new, third-generation
Continental GT to redefine grand touring. It is the ultimate grand tourer, combining exhilarating
high performance with the ability to cover huge distances in effortless comfort. It’s the result of
great teamwork across every discipline at Crewe, from design to production. I was proud to reveal it
to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show and now you can read all about it on page 24.

Meanwhile, technology continues to offer intriguing possibilities for the future. A new app-based
pilot scheme in the US, Bentley on demand, will have your chosen model waiting for you at the
airport as you land. For Bentley drivers with multiple homes around the world, it could be a new
approach to ownership, much as fractional ownership has transformed private aviation. You’ll find
more details on page 72.

From the craftsmanship of the new range of Bentley handbags on page 56 to our regular Behind
the Scenes series on page 94, which profiles the unsung heroes and heroines of Crewe, this issue
reflects the varied, rich and ever-changing world of Bentley. I hope you enjoy it.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors

WORDS: GELASIO GAETANI PHOTOGRAPHY: ALINE COQUELLE

Since it was founded in 1919, Bentley has epitomised
craftsmanship, innovation and excellence. It represents
aspiration and achievement. It embodies a sense of
adventure and a desire to see and champion the world in
all its glory. Such values and passions are not only part of the
spirit of Bentley, but also of its extraordinary customers.

For a forthcoming book for the publisher Assouline, I set out
WRGLVFRYHUZKDWGH¿QHVWKH%HQWOH\VSLULWDQGWKRVHZKRVKDUH
it by undertaking a grand tour of Britain.

With the photographer Aline Coquelle as my travel
companion, we visited vibrant cities and idyllic villages, saw
dramatic mountains and beautiful lakes, and discovered
fascinating heritage. And along the way we met extraordinary
people, from entrepreneurs and conservationists to scientists
and musicians, who all share a love of Bentley and its values.

They included the composer and Pink Floyd drummer
Nick Mason. His love of historic racing cars stems from his
fatherís appreciation of Bentley craftsmanship. We also met car
collector and global citizen Tara Getty, whose passion for
conservation ranges from classic yachts to sustainability projects.
At Diana and Julian Temperleyís idyllic farm in Somerset, we not
only enjoyed their celebrated cider brandy, but also met their
daughter, the renowned fashion designer Alice Temperley.

Our journey ended at the home of Bentley in Crewe, where the
pride of its creative and skilled designers, engineers and craftspeople
is palpable. Just as all the greatest wines are determined by their
terroir, so we discovered Bentleyís terroir: a special set of human
and technological elements ñ engineering, design, performance
and exclusivity ñ that combine to make its cars so unique.

Such a special subject requires an equally special and
beautifully crafted book of the kind that luxury publishing house
Assouline is renowned. Through stunning imagery and the
insights from those we met, we gained a unique and intimate
glimpse of the qualities that continue to make Bentley and its
customers so extraordinary.

In the case of the Continental GT V8 Convertible Galene Edition
by Mulliner, a design collaboration between Bentley Motors and
Princess Yachts, that shared connection is one of ethos and
approach when it comes to innovative design and meticulous

Based in Plymouth, on Englandís south coast, the shipyard was
