Silent Lunch Stories Page2

A favorite Tribal event of Southwoods campers is Silent Lunch! This goofy event
takes place in the dining hall and- you guessed it- the campers and staff have to try
and stay quiet while Group Leaders and Head Staff try all sorts of things to make
them laugh! This summer’s Silent Lunch featured light sabers, quesadillas, the
Baby Shark song, and a ton of animal onesies!! While the GLs and Head Staff
wandered the dining hall, each tribe supported each other and helped everyone

stay as quiet as possible! It was pretty difficult,
because the Southwoods staff are some of the
funniest people in the world! You could hear
sighs of relief echoing up the bunkline as Lower
and Upper Camp successfully exited the dining
hall. In the end, Mohawk did the best job of
staying silent and won Silent Lunch! With so
many silly events happening every day at camp,
there’s never a dull moment at Southwoods!

A LETTER FROM ANDREA & SCOTT PAGE 3

Dear Southwoods,

It’s shocking that week three here at camp has already come to a close. What is not
shocking is the energy and level of excitement that drips from the trees like a new spring
rain. Tribal is on every ones lips as we begin the big push towards Sing. And as we listen to
the campers talk about Rope Burn or Egg Drop, you can clearly see the pride they have in
their Chieftains and the unwavering belief that they will lead the way to victory. I do not

know who is more excited, our campers or us!!!

As we charge head-on into week 4 together, we should take a moment and reflect on all the
great stuff we have done this week; Upper Inter Great Escape and Waterpark trip, Lower
Senior White Water Rafting trip, The Juniors Fun Spot trip, Lower Senior Burlington trip,

All Camp campfire, Varsity under the lights, Ninja Warrior day, Rainbow Warriors, All
Camp Movie Night, and Candy Hunt. We also had our Trek trips; Upper Inter Boys and
Girls Schroon River Canoe overnight, Ward Gregory caving trips, Junior Girls hike, Lower
Inter Boys Hike, Lower Senior Girls overnight, all the inter-camp games, we started our
Project Morry Swim A Thon and so much more. On top of all this we did our regular daily
program of ski, swim, tennis, soccer, arts & crafts, archery, climb, high pines, baseball,

cooking, and 50 other activities... Does any place pack more fun into one week than
Southwoods? No way!

In addition to all the fun, a bit of sadness was experienced this week as our LIT's departed
for home. They were amazing this summer and all of our campers and staff were sorry to
see them go. But how lucky are we that we have 6 more days together. So in this last week…
make sure that you stop, take a moment, and enjoy every second of where you are and who

you are with, because before you know it, camp will be over and we will have to wait
another whole year before we all get to do it again.

Love,

Andrea & Scott

Southwoods ninjas!!

Hyah! This week’s special event day was the first ever
Southwoods Ninja Warrior Day!! In the morning,
campers went to electives and got a chance to design
their very own ninja headbands! After a delicious picnic
lunch in the Grove, we headed off to test our physical
and mental agility. Not even some liquid sunshine could
stop our ninja skills! In the Sports Pavilion, campers
raced on an intense obstacle course to see who would be
crowned the Southwoods Ninja Warrior Champion! We
also played some games like Giant Jenga, inflatable Gaga, and Giant Connect Four! In the
Grove, campers tried out different puzzles and games like Jeopardy, Family Feud, Head’s
Up, Yahtzee, and more! We finished off our rotations back in the soccer field with the two
fastest campers from each age group racing to become the Ninja Champion!! Everyone
discovered their inner ninja at Southwoods Ninja Warrior Day! Next we all ate a delicious
cookout dinner in the dining hall! We finished off Ninja Warrior Day with an all camp
movie night!! Everyone ate canteen and popcorn while watching Spiderman: Into the
Spider Verse! Everyone can be a ninja here at Southwoods!

Dance Show 2019!
By: Jillian McKiernan, LSG

Every year at Southwoods there is a dance show! The dance
show is open to all campers in every age group. You can do
any kind of dance, for example hip hop, ballet, clogging,
Irish dance, tap, and many more! You can bring special
shoes, choreography, and your own music to camp so you
can perform your best. If you didn’t bring your own music
or choreography, Josie the dance specialist would be happy
to help!
The dance show is a chance for campers to show their
hidden dancing talents to their friends at Southwoods.
The show is not only energetic for the dancers but also
for the staff and campers. The show is an unforgettable
performance to watch at Southwoods! In conclusion,
the dance show is a really fun camp experience. I did one
performance as a solo, and one performance with two of my friends as a trio. I
loved being in the dance show!

Theater!
By: Brooklyn Ford, Junior Girl

This summer the play we are doing is Shrek! I have a
line in the play because I’m playing Tinkerbell. My
line is “Peter, I’m scared!” I don’t really have to
practice it anymore because I already know it but I do
practice where I stand on stage. My friend Miya is
playing Peter Pan and I stand next to her and also by
the 3 blind mice who are Raquel, Courtney, and
Czarina. They’re all in my bunk so we rehearse
together and also with the Lower Inter Girls!

In the play we get to sing two songs! We practice the
songs in the theater with Linnzie the Theater Director and Lucy the Piano
Specialist. Everyone is practicing really hard for the show and I think it’s going to
be really good. The play is on Friday and everyone is going to come watch it! I love
going to theater and being in the play!

Sunday Summaries

Tribal Swim and Final Campfire Page7

We’re racing towards the end of Tribal War 2019 and it’s anybody’s game! This Sunday, the
tribes were down at the waterfront competing in Tribal Swim! The events ranged from

chalk drawing to canoe races to dry hat relays, with everything in between!! After an intense
morning of swimming and a jam-packed afternoon of group and individual games, it was

Mohawk who again came out on top! Will they be able to keep their flag on top of the
flagpole all the way to the end of Tribal? No one knows!

We finished Sunday with our final campfire of Summer 2019! Can you believe how fast this
session has gone? We sure can’t!! Scott spoke to the whole camp about making the most of

our last week together: trying new things, returning to favorite activities, and reminding
friends and bunkmates about how much fun you’ve had together. That’s the way, the

Southwoods Way! This may have been the best campfire yet- the Lower Camp Boys hosted
with the theme of Integrity, and there were some truly amazing performances! The Upper
Senior Girls performed Southwoods Singers, the Upper Inter Boys did the Lasagna song,

Johnny did the Milk song, and many more! Campfire was closed out by Junior Boy
counselor Taz on the guitar, playing songs like I Just Can’t Wait to Be King from the Lion

King, Riptide by Vance Joy and Time of Your Life by Green Day!

This week is full of Tribal Events like Egg Drop and Rope Burn, culminating with our
TRIBAL FINALE! Apache Relay, Alma Mater, Comedy, and Plaque are all big point events

with the potential to turn the tide of Tribal War for any team! We know that the
Southwoods campers will work their hardest in the final days of Tribal- stay tuned for the

outcome in the next newsletter!

There’s only one week left of our time together at camp- we are so grateful for all of the fun
we’ve had together this summer! There’s no place in the world like Southwoods!
