Golu and Navaratri … 2

Children recite slokas, sing songs and eat special dishes offered to the gods, especially
the protein-rich dish called sundal (which is made of legumes) with some sweets and
fruits. Women folk exchange “Thamboolam” which includes betel leaves, betel nuts,
coconuts, fruits, flowers, bangles, turmeric, and Kumkum.
The ninth day is celebrated with Saraswathi Pooja (worshipping the goddess of
knowledge and learning) - books and musical instruments are offered along with the
Golu. Ayudha pooja (worship and thanksgiving to tools and implements and vehicles) is
performed. All kinds of vehicles (such as busses, cars, and trucks) and tools (such as
water pumps, chisels, hammers, ploughs) are thanked. The tenth day is the day of
victory (Vijaya Dashami) —an auspicious day to start new ventures and journeys, and a
day to start learning new skills.
On the tenth and last day, the Golu dolls are symbolically put to sleep and packed the
next day to be brought out of the boxes the following year.

Significance of Keeping Golu
Golu has a significant connection with the agricultural and handicrafts professions in
India. Besides the economic aspect of the festival, it is an important occasion for
socializing.

Experience of keeping Golu at our Apartment (SSR)
In today’s fast-moving life, people do not have time for enjoyment. In such
circumstances, festivals act as a break from the hectic schedule. Celebrating festivals in
housing society is fun and is a better opportunity to know and build good relations with
your society members. Dussehra is one such event that is celebrated majestically in
India. Dussehra is one of the most awaited festivals in India. Organizing Dussehra
celebrations in an apartment community can be a completely exciting experience. An
apartment complex is a perfect place to celebrate Dussehra, mainly because people who
come from various parts of the country and from different cultural background stay in
such apartment complexes as they provide a multicultural and cosmopolitan
environment. In your apartment complex, you can provide a stage where the Mysore
Dussehra can blend effortlessly with the north-Indian Navaratri and the Bengali Durga
Puja, within the same premises. Children will be exposed to the various aspects of their
own festivals, and they will be able to gain an understanding about the different festivals
celebrated across all states.

dolls - variety & types (wooden, ceramic, clay, metal, etc). Gave a very good idea and
introduction as to how golu is celebrated in southern India"

"It was a fabulous experience for me, being the first of its kind after moving to SSR. The
Durga Pooja cultural were organised very well and the whole team deserves a huge
round of applause. The Golu which was placed at the entrance gained a lot of curious
visitors wanting to know the tradition and it was a proud moment to see people posing
for photos in front of it."

Thiruvalarselvi (D 1101)
It was an amazing experience. First time we initiated the golu at our apartment.
Everybody participated with full enthusiasm. The collection of dolls and arranging the
dolls was a nice experience. We spent valuable time together and had real fun. All
working ladies also, in-between their tight schedule, they did a great job. Because of
team work only it came out well and it was a successful event.

Shanthini (E 804)

The last few days have been ones of greatest fun and fulfilment for all the families in
SSR. It was all about the scintillating performance during the Durga Puja celebrations
and thanks to the ladies for keeping and viewing of the golu as part of Navaratri
celebration in South India. The keeping of the traditional golu or gallery of dolls of major
deities, the mythological events in ascending steps, in addition to other scenic views of a
village on a sand spread on the ground with colour lights to illuminate them provided a
9-day religious and social fervour. Golu, a religious fervour celebrated the path of victory
of good over evil, the right over the wrong. It was a great teamwork activity as we tried
bringing out new ideas and we were all one family in achieving single goal of having the
celebrations having the ethnicity and kids enrich them with the variety showcased. Most
of us must have shared this delightful and enjoyable experience of Durga Puja
celebrations and the golu this year; different themes from the elaborate, extravagant
ones to the simple, traditional and artistic ones and the tales enthusiastic families told
us about their ideas and tastes. Looking forward for another year of exploring
experience!!
