HOW TO ROCK TRIBAL WEAR
Fusing cultural pieces with more traditional aspects of your outfit is the new wave. It's
the perfect way to express your personal sense of style and rep your culture too. Here's a
few tips - inspired by cover star Sho Madjozi's style - to give a try.
Add some beads to your hairstyle
Whether you rock a full on Afro, or prefer braids and plaits, beads are an excellent way to
accentuate your hairstyle with touch of tribal chic. Go crazy with the colours and don't be scared
to overdo it- the louder the better.
Use a signature cultural piece
Sho Madjozi's has an intimate love of Xibelani – a piece of Xitsonga attire used in traditional
ceremonies and during dances. You can add a signature piece such a a bracelet or neck-piece
to get that cultural pop in your look.
Invest in print fabric
Madjozi isn't our only style crush using print to make a statement. Young fashion maestro
Trevor Stuurman has been living by print rules and we know why. Print is the perfect African
fashion statement and a few fabric pieces completes any look.
AKA AND ANATII… SPREADING THAT GOSPEL FOR THE CULTURE
Slated for release on July 28th - after a two week pushback that had fans surprised - Be Careful
What You Wish For is finally about to drop. A quick glance at the tracklist confirms gospel theme
threaded throughout the collaborative project’s singles.
1. Bryanston Drive 6 Holy Mountain
2. 10 Fingers 7 Don't Forget To Pray
3. Psalm. 1000 8 Angelz
4. How You Like Me Now 9 Jesus Plug
5. Camps Bay 3 10 The Saga
The tracklist reveals Angels, Prayer and Jesus all being referenced. And it’s a signal of what to
expect from the duo, who’s coming together seems to have brought the best out of the both of
them. One thing it’s brought out of Anatii is his proud Xhosa heritage. The melodies and content
of his verses have a vernac flavour that we love.
The singer/producer reveals a lot more of his cultural than previous collabs and this shines
through on the infectious 10 Fingers hook. The “Haibo” adlib is really catchy and the trend is
continued on Don’t Forget To Pray, which boasts a sizzling Xhosa verse by Anatii and has us
saying “ewe” repeatedly. For a genre that often gets criticised for being too American, the trend
of using local references as influences is awesome. AKA himself sampling Caiphus Semenya
on the earworm Caiphus Song is a proudly South African move we support. It’s definitely
something we wish to see more of and the combination of 2 artists who are as culturally
conscious as they are musically talented has as in anticipation.
Anatii does a lot more exploring of his Xhosa cultures with his fashion sense, as seen in the pic
below. Seems like our tribal wear tips should include accessorising your headgear with a band
of Xhosa beads. Anatii, who goes by the moniker Electronic Bushman, is serving cultural chic in
musical terms too and we’re here for all of it.
KOLEKA PUTUMA
Cover Star Sho Madjozi is known in some circles as Maya The Poet; a passion she has
alongside music. Another poet making waves is Cape Town based Koleka Putuma, whose
debut anthology Collective Amnesia has captured the nation’s attention. It’s received rave
reviews from virtually everyone, so grab yourself a copy.
JR’S FEEL GOOD LIVE SESSIONS
Into live music and love Donald, Sjava, JR , Shekinah, Bucie or Reason? Then you’ll want to
catch this online platform - made for musicians to perform with the backing of a live band. It’s
the perfect way to start your weekend with editions live streamed on YouTube every Friday.
MICROWAVE BOYS
Microwave Boys is an online show that does a summary of the weeks trending stories. Hosted
by Larry, Sipho and Sphaka, it’s an entertaining look at youthful news and current affairs. It’s
hilarious and has even been graced by both Moshe Ndiki and Cassper Nyovest already.
6 TIPS TO KEEP THAT SKIN SHINING IN WINTER
1 USE LUKEWARM WATER
Always use lukewarm water. The hotter the water temperature the higher the chance of
dehydrating your skin. And yes, this includes those long baths we love during winter!
2 STAY MOISTURISED
Keep your skin hydrated to prevent peeling and chaffing. A long lasting body lotion goes a long
way, and you can should always keep hand lotion and lip balm on deck.
3 KEEP USING SUNSCREEN
The days may not be as sunny or hot, but the sun’s rays still reach us. Make sure you’re
protected at all times.
4 DRINK WATER
Rehydrated your body as you do your skin. Make sure you’re getting enough liquids. Even if you
aren’t thirsty.
5 AVOID SYNTHETIC PRODUCTS
Avoid alcohol based products and use oil or water based creations on your body. The more
natural the ingredients, the healthier for your skin.
