In recent years, we’ve been able to bring additional social-emotional supports to our
schools through the implementation of student support systems. Together we have
restructured positions that resulted in meeting the needs of our students as well as
contributed to increased hours and benefits for many of our employees. None of these
efforts would have been possible without SETC and CSEA being strong partners that
provides leadership through various structures and processes for its members to have
voice as professionals.

We value the partnership between the district and each of our employee groups. Our
collaboration allows us to disagree and challenge each other to find new ways to move
forward and reach the common ground that best serves our students, their families and
staff members in Salinas City Elementary School District.

Thank you for all that you do to support your colleagues, our students, our families,
our community and our profession. Your involvement in the association strengthens
our partnership. Together we are Salinas City Elementary School District and one great
team.

The work of educating and supporting all students is difficult, but more important than
ever. To be successful, it takes all of us engaging in it together.

TESTING & SIS

THE UPDATE

Every Day Counts:

Common sense tells us that students can’t learn if they are not at school. Research confirms that school attendance
affects student achievement, especially absences not due to illness.

Engagement Strategies for Educators
Adopt an active role in fostering positive, open communication with students and parents.
• Form healthy professional relationships with students.
• Know at least one thing about each student’s interests out of school.
• Talk to students.
• Contact parents to let them know how their children are going at school (via diary entries, phone calls, email).

Actively develop a safe and secure environment for all students
• Encourage all students in the class to take responsibility for each other’s safety.
• Model and develop a culture of trust.
• Model effective timekeeping practices, for example returning work promptly, arriving and finishing classes on time.

Communicate and promote the school’s attendance expectations regarding
the importance of attending school every day and arriving on time
• Talk to students about why it is important to be at school and discuss the school’s attendance policy.
• Talk positively about regular attendance.

ADA (Average Daily Attendance):

The district’s ADA for the 2017/18 was 95.38 % not including Saturday attendance recovery (AARC) and 95.55%
including Saturday attendance recovery (AARC). The State ADA goal is 97%. Please communicate to parents and
students the importance of making everyday count!
