More than 300 young students and their families participated in the
1 Mile Run/Walk

Sprint to the Finish

Red Devil Dash

On a beautiful fall morning, more than 400 runners and
walkers gathered for the 5K run/walk and the 1 Mile Fun
Run, and the new Family Walk on Oct. 1, 2016. This
annual event, made possible in part with support from
Chartwells, raises funds to support PTEF programs while
also celebrating the Pike school community. Many
elementary teams train together as part of running clubs
and show their school spirit with team T-shirts. There
were even supporters who participated in spirit as
“Snoozing Devils,” opting to sleep in instead!

Little Caesar’s Caesar Man joined the pack at the start
line and showed great endurance in finishing the race!
The top three male and female finishers in the 5K
received gift cards courtesy of Endurance House, and the
first three boys and girls across the finish line of the 1-mile
race received trophies. Deer Run Elementary was
awarded the traveling trophy and a check for $250 for
having the highest percentage of students registering for
the race. Foundation representatives visited the school for
a special assembly to celebrate the enthusiasm and
efforts of Deer Run staff and students.

The event raised more than $2,200 and an immeasurable
amount of Pike pride! In 2017, the event has a new
location – the newly constructed district cross-country
course at Eastbrook Elementary School. We are excited
to partner with the Pike High School cross-country team
to run this event.

Treasures for Education

Celebrating 125 years of Pike Township schools, the annual
Treasures gala had a new date, a new location, and a record
fundraising total! More than 300 guests gathered March 4 at The
Willows on Westfield to bid on a variety of auction items, including
merchandise and gift certificates from local businesses,
handcrafted items, jewelry, vacations, and items for crafters,
athletes and foodies. Several guests attended the Beer & Wine
Tasting before the event, enjoying a variety of craft beers
provided by Wabash Brewing and fine wines from Mass Ave Wine
Shop. Dr. Flora Reichanadter, superintendent of MSD Pike,
delivered the keynote address, and former Board of Directors
member William Coleman Jr. was honored as Director Emeritus
for his enduring support of our programs. Guests were
entertained by the opera talents of Ava Brown, a member of the
PHS Class of 2018. Guests responded to her performance of “O
Mio Babbino Caro” by donating $545 to support her attendance at
Boston University Tanglewood Institute vocal training program in
summer 2017. A D.J. spun dance tunes, and many guests
enjoyed this new addition to the gala.

Our success was made possible in part by the generous support
of presenting sponsor Diverse Staffing, diamond sponsors Ingram Micro and Purdue University, and Beer & Wine
Tasting sponsor The Law Office of Danielle Gregory. Special thanks also goes to teachers from New Augusta
South, who volunteered at the event. For many years, it has been a goal to increase the profit from Treasures to
$50,000, and we are incredibly pleased to report that this year we exceeded that goal!

Be sure to mark your calendar for March 3, 2018, and plan to attend Treasures for Education! We will have
great food, outstanding company, student performances, and dancing! For the first time, we will use an online
bidding program, so even if you are unable to attend, you can register to bid on the fabulous items available for
purchase, including the ever-popular school baskets! Visit our website for more information and a link to register to
attend or bid online.

Celebrations

Since 1993, we have hosted Celebrations, an evening of teacher recognition. This year’s event was held on May 4 at the
Grand Hall at Westlake Gardens. Many staff embraced the Star Wars parody theme “May the 4th be with you” by dressing in
Star Wars-themed costumes. For the first time, schools were encouraged to decorate their tables with a theme and show
their enthusiasm as they competed for the Spirit Award (homemade treats delivered to a staff meeting). It was very inspiring
to see all the creative themes. Representatives from Olivet Nazarene, our event sponsor, selected College Park Elementary
staff for the Spirit Award, in recognition of their theme celebrating support of fellow teacher, Ms. Megan March, who is
battling cancer.

During this event, administrators from MSD Pike present years of service awards in five-year increments, bringing special
recognition to those who have served Pike for more than 20 years. Teacher of the Year awards for each building are
presented, and the recipient of the Pike Teacher of the Year Award is announced. Champion Auto Sales gave each building
teacher of the year a cash gift, and PTEF awarded Mrs. Lena Darnay, district Teacher of the Year, with a $500 cash gift.
Mrs. Darnay was the media specialist and academies director at Pike High School until taking a position this fall as district
technology integrator. Mrs. Darnay was one of 10 finalists for the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award. Congratulations, Lena!

Each year, in the weeks preceding Celebrations, students and families are invited to nominate a Champion Teacher. The
award winner must exemplify excellence in education by motivating and inspiring Pike students to exceed their goals. All
nominees receive a copy of their nomination, and they are posted on our social media pages and shared with all MSD Pike
staff in daily emails during that time. Members of the PTEF Board of Directors select one winner from the nominations and
that teacher is announced at Celebrations. This year, Mrs. Christy Gordon, PHS Alumna and kindergarten teacher at
Fishback Creek Public Academy, received the Champion Teacher award: a crystal apple and a $500 cash gift from PTEF.
Congratulations Christy!

#GivingTuesday Campaign

PTEF embarked on our first-ever #GivingTuesday campaign in 2016. Using social media, we shared stories about the
impact of our programs. Our followers responded with donations and by posting “unselfies” to show their Pike pride. On
#GivingTuesday, students at all K-8 Pike schools and teachers at Pike High School enjoyed a jeans day, collectively
contributing more than $2,500 for the privilege of wearing jeans on a Tuesday! Several local restaurants joined our
campaign, hosting days when a portion of the sales were donated to PTEF.

Altogether, more than $4,500 was raised, and 40% of individual donors gave to PTEF for the first time. When combined
with our annual campaign, the total exceeded $5,300.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the
Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off
the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Join our #PikeProud #GivingTuesday movement on
Tuesday, Nov.28, 2017, and through the end of the year.

19th Annual Golf Outing

Though the forecast looked ominous on June 15, as 88
golfers headed out for 18 holes of golf at Twin Lakes Golf
Club in Carmel, the storms stayed at bay and we enjoyed a
picture-perfect day for golf! With support from
Presenting Sponsor Paradise Landscape & Nursery,
Fairway Sponsor EMS Services, and more than a dozen
other corporate partners, we raised more than $15,500 with
this year’s outing. We are especially grateful for the support
Mr. Raul Rivas, MSD Pike Director of Facilities and
Securities, lends to making this event such a success.

Dr. Flora Reichanadter, superintendent of MSD Pike, also
joined in the fun by driving one of our beverage carts. She
competed for tips with our Co-Executive Director Christie
Graham, and the two collected more than $600 to add to our
fundraising total!

This is the second year in a row we have exceeded $15,000
for this event, and we are excited to continue this
momentum in 2018. Please plan to join us Thursday, June
14, 2018, at Twin Lakes Golf Club. Watch our website and

The Gift of College Opportunities

Scholarship Program

The first scholarship awarded by PTEF was a $1,000 Hallmark of Excellence Scholarship, now given annually to at least
one Pike High School senior who has demonstrated talents in the classroom and in the community. In recent years,
PTEF has added several scholarships, each given to at least one recipient each year:

• Academy Scholarships ($1,000 each), one scholarship for each of the nine PHS academies. These recipients are
selected by staff from the appropriate academy.

• Overcoming Obstacles Scholarship ($2,000).
• Pike Township Educational Foundation Reaching for Success Scholarship ($2,000).
• Pike Preparatory Academy Scholarship ($3,000 total available for one or more students selected by PPA staff).
• Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship Endowment, held by Central Indiana Community Foundation ($1,000).

In addition to scholarships funded by the general scholarship fund, the following honorary or memorial scholarships were
managed by PTEF this fiscal year:

• Maggie Harry Memorial Scholarship ($1,000). • Walter Moll Memorial Scholarship ($500).

PTEF also administrates several pass-through scholarships funded through private donations, including:

• Plan to Succeed Scholarship ($1,000), sponsored by Peter Dunn, “Pete the Planner,” PHS ’96.

We were pleased to offer several new scholarships to the Class of 2017. In addition to the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship
(see article below), the family of Michael K. Guest, PHS ‘67, created a scholarship in his memory. This $1,000 award is
given to a senior who pursues excellence, values his/her family, and demonstrates high character. Another scholarship
program is the “Be a Philanthropist” Scholarship. This program allows a donor to make a one-time contribution for a
single-year scholarship award. Local business owners Lindsay and Tully Bevilaqua donated the funds and identified the
criteria. Lastly, because PTEF absorbed the PHS Alumni Association, we now manage the Alumni Association
Scholarship awards, as well as the Max & B.A. Metzler Scholarship award, and an additional $3,000 scholarship was
awarded in 2017 thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Honoring Leadership

Nathaniel Jones Scholarship

In December 2017, Nathaniel Jones retired from his position as superintendent of MSD Pike Township. In celebration of
his retirement and with gratitude for his nearly 13 years of service to Pike schools, the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship was
established. To date, more than $9,000 has been contributed to the fund, and in May, the first $1,000 scholarship award
was presented to Antony Winfrey, PHS Class of 2017. We continue to collect contributions for this fund with the goal of
maintaining an endowed fund that when fully funded, will gift a scholarship annually to a Pike High School senior with
plans to become an educator. To contribute to this fund, visit www.tinyurl.com/give2ptef or mail your check to the
address inside the front cover. Please note “Jones Scholarship” on your check.

When the Pike Township Educational Foundation had the
opportunity to double our impact through Donor’s Choose,
we jumped at the opportunity. At the start of the 2016-17
school year, we committed $10,000 in Donor’s Choose

Snapping Together Success

Guion Creek Middle School

When Debbie Huffine, a teacher and the coach of the Jagtech Robotics
Team at Guion Creek Middle School, learned that only 2.7% of all
STEM-related jobs worldwide are held by women, she knew that she had
do something. Mrs. Huffine decided to use Jagtech as a way to
encourage the girls at her school to explore opportunities in STEM.
However, in order to do that, she needed additional resources. That’s

where the PTEF came in.
PTEF funded Mrs. Huffine’s
grant, allowing her to
purchase the supplies needed
to expand her robotics team
and offer a summer camp
session introducing robotics to children throughout Pike Township. She
shared, “Thanks to the Pike Township Educational Foundation’s generous
contribution, I now have six robotics teams, including two all-female teams! It
has been incredible to watch this opportunity move my students from ‘I wish’
to ‘I can’. I’ve seen them design, build, program, and envision futures in
STEM. I cannot thank the PTEF enough for making this transformative
learning experience possible.”

Although the experience is invaluable, participation is
not cheap. Team must raise funds to pay for supplies,
registration fees, and travel expenses. While some of
this cost is passed on to students, total team costs
exceed $50,000 annually.

That is where the PTEF comes in. While many
organizations are willing to donate directly to Pike
schools, some stipulate that the organization receiving
grant funding must have a 501(c)3 status. Since 2006,
PTEF has had the pleasure of serving as the
administrative organization for $21,000 in grant funding
that partners like Beckman-Coulter Foundation and
UPS, have donated to support the team.

Program leaders are grateful that because of the
relationship with PTEF, they are able to receive support
that might otherwise have been inaccessible, and we are
grateful to be able to support this incredible program!

Deer Run Elementary

Becoming an Eagle Scout is a huge accomplishment that, among other things,
requires candidates to lead a project to completion. When Pike High School stu-
dent and prospective Eagle Scout Richard Wells discovered that there was no
relief from the sun on Deer Run Elementary School’s playground, he was deter-
mined to fix it. To pay for the project, Richard held a fundraiser at a local restau-
rant and, along with Deer Run teacher Stacy Dalton, applied for a grant from the
PTEF. Richard combined the money he raised with the $2,000 he
received from the PTEF and used it to plan and execute the installation of a
12-foot-tall sunshade. It took Richard and his faithful volunteers 11 hours to com-
plete the project, but Deer Run Elementary School students and staff
members will benefit from their hard work for years to come.

Pike High School Outdoor Lab & Garden

With a $6,935 investment over two years, the PTEF was able to fund three
projects that will enhance learning for students throughout our district,
provide a beautiful space for our residents, and honor the proud tradition of
our community. The projects, spearheaded by Pike High School’s AP
Environmental Science & Sustainability teacher and Outdoor Lab
coordinator Christina Mitchell, all centered around the Outdoor Lab at Pike
High School.

During Phase I, Mrs. Mitchell worked with Pike High School art and
environmental science students to “Bring the Lorax to the Outdoor Lab.”
Art students painted an unused structure with a colorful scene from Dr.
Seuss’s The Lorax, while students in Mrs. Mitchell’s science class
updated flower beds and created interpretive posters and booklets for the
elementary school students who visit the lab. In fact, thanks to Mrs.
Mitchell’s plan to incorporate a teen teaching model, third-graders from all
nine Pike elementary schools will have the opportunity to visit the Outdoor
Lab to participate in hands-on learning experiences that align with
Indiana’s science standards while emphasizing the themes
of shared responsibility and conservation.

In order to prepare for Phase II of her project, Mrs. Mitchell
held a series of meetings with Pike educators, students,
and parents. She noticed a common theme in each
meeting. Our stakeholders expressed a desire for a place
of beauty to sit and read. To meet this demand, Mrs.
Mitchell and a group of enthusiastic volunteers decided to
transform an unused parcel of land near the Outdoor Lab
into a Native Butterfly Plants Reading Garden. Upon
receiving support from the PTEF, the team went about
removing the nonnative plants and replacing them with
native plants that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds,
providing students and teachers with a place to observe
the beauty of Pike’s natural wildlife as they sit and read.
Thanks to their efforts, Pike High School students and
educators now have a beautiful place to read as they
observe nature and enjoy the fresh air.

For the final phase of her project, Mrs. Mitchell partnered with our neighbors
at Robin Run Village to host an Earth Day celebration called Growing the
Pike Environment. During the first few hours of the event, volunteers worked
to replace invasive honeysuckle, rejuvenate the area, and plant 50 trees
native to Indiana. Following that, members of the community were invited to
learn about some of the amazing environmental and STEM-related
experiences available at Pike High School and in our Pike community.

Mrs. Mitchell used funds from PTEF to purchase the trees and establish the
Pike Honor Garden, a beautiful space near the Outdoor Lab with trees,
plants, and benches available to dedicate in honor or memory of alumni,
teachers, families, graduate classes, or friends of Pike. All funds raised go
directly to purchase plants, trees, and supplies for the Outdoor Lab. Students
are involved in all levels of the garden creation – from purchase decisions to
building implementation and upkeep. They learn environmental science,
business, accounting, horticulture, teamwork, collaboration, and design.

Thanks to Mrs. Mitchell’s incredible vision and the PTEF’s support, we are
truly Growing the Pike Environment, and the entire community is benefiting
from the effort!

Making a difference together!

Leave a Lasting Legacy

Planned Giving

You can make a difference in the lives of Pike students while creating a legacy that honors the values that matter most to you.

Working with the Central Indiana Community Foundation, PTEF can help you identify a plan that fits your estate giving
needs, suits your circumstances, and reflects the ideals you value most.

Planned giving, including bequests, charitable trusts, appreciated securities, and endowments, provides creative and
flexible strategies for your estate and charitable giving. Some planned gifts may even reduce your tax liability. But by
far, the greatest benefit is knowing you are making a difference for Pike students by providing resources to fund
innovative approaches to education and college scholarships. By including the Pike Township Educational Foundation
(PTEF) in your estate planning, you are creating an impact that will last for generations to come.
