Aquatics & Safety

Learn to swim with Lakeville Area Community Ed!
Our caring and dedicated instructors are Red Cross trained and certified to help your child enjoy
developing swimming and water safety skills in a positive learning environment. Safety topics are
included in all classes: basic water safety, healthy swimming, safe water entry, helping yourself and
others in an emergency, and safe weather conditions for swimming. Pre-requisite for each level
is the mastery of skills from the preceding level or equivalent skills. Each child is provided with a
skill assessment within the first two classes to determine appropriate level placement. Each student
receives a progress report at the middle of the session and at the end of the session. It is common for
a child to repeat a level before mastering all skills. Semi-Private lessons must register 2 swimmers and
it is recommended the students are at a similar skill level.

Early Childhood Family Education ECFE

Welcome to ECFE

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a Lakeville Area School District Community Education program that
strengthens families with young children through education and support.
The components of most classes are:

1. Growing Together: For You and Your Child
Half of each class is devoted to activities planned by a licensed early
childhood teacher for parents and children to explore together.
Together you can enjoy learning through art, music, stories and a
variety of developmental activities. It is an opportunity to learn new
ideas, games and activities that you can do at home.

2. Growing Independently: For Your Child
The remaining portion of each class is for children to have fun
learning through play using art, movement, games and stories with
the early childhood teacher, the classroom assistant and the other
children. New friendships are formed and children discover new
aspects of “me” while they learn apart from you. The goal of the
children’s program is to develop a healthy self-concept and a joy of
learning.

3. Growing Confidently: For You
While children take part in the children’s program, parents join with
other parents in an informal group setting for discussion time led by
a licensed parent educator. The challenges of being a parent are enjoyable, complex, and at times, stressful. Parents
have the opportunity to choose and discuss current family topics, share ideas and concerns and feel encouraged by
the support of others.

Early Childhood Family Education

September 2018-19 School Year

Stepping Stones - transition to preschool

Preschool ages 3 & 4 years

Welcome to your child’s first preschool experience!

This class combines the best of both worlds: Traditional ECFE and Preschool.

Tuesday afternoons are similar to a typical ECFE class in that it includes time for
parent/child interaction and parent education. During parent/child interaction time,
the early childhood teacher will set up fun activities that encourage emerging literacy
and mathematical thinking skills. Parents will meet with a parent educator and other
families to discuss a variety of topics that relate to parenting a preschooler. Parents meet
with the early childhood teacher twice a year to evaluate your child’s progress.

Thursdays you will drop your child off for their preschool experience.
Children will practice social skills by sharing, taking turns, using
manners, pretending, following directions and listening…all in a
play-based environment.

Children are not required to be potty trained to attend this class.

See online description for more details.
