tent. For our over-21 guests, wristbands for the Art of the
Drink, as well as wine and beer tastings, will be available for
purchase at the Welcome Center.

Come visit #DCUFO and get a picture next to a DC flag-wielding
alien and a 10-foot diameter, LED-lit spacecraft. The first 100
visitors can take home a free piece of out-of-this-world
artwork.

Amidst a backdrop of gleaming tiles, visitors
can explore Cuban street scenes, get lost in
geometric abstractions, encounter voodoo priestesses, create
a Japanese bonbori lantern, and more!

The Japanese bonbori lantern is specially made for festivals.
Join artist Margaret Vaughan Siebel, on the lower level, to
learn the traditional method for creating bonbori with sticks
and beautiful hand-made paper from Japan, India, and Thailand.
The finished lantern is perfect as a tabletop centerpiece. Add a
votive, and the lantern casts a warm and lovely glow. All ages
welcome; children under 13 accompanied by an adult. This free
art experience takes about 15-20 minutes.

in “night sky,” Julia, a 76-year-old bronx resident, loses her job

and is faced with losing her home when she receives notice that

the building where she has lived for over 50 years is being

converted into condos. with her best friend, julia comes up with

a plan for them to stay in her apartment, maintain their

independence, and hold on to life as they’ve known it. the play is

about the bonds of family and friendship, and the inescapable

“The life of a bee”

reknowned muralist matthew

willey will be painting an outdoor

mural at janney elementary

this fall to raise awareness about the importance of

pollinators, and celebrate conservation and pro-pollinator

efforts in Washington, DC. This mural is part of Willey’s “The

Good of the Hive” initiative. For one night only, until the fully

painted mural is revealed, Willey will preview the mural with a

light projection. See what will be joining the current scout

bee, and learn about the importance of bees and other

pollinators to our ecosystem. Kids also will be able to have

fun with some bee and honey-themed interactive games, arts,

and crafts.

margaret vaughan siebel presents art
in unexpected places. the window is
aglow with japanese andon lanterns.
constructed with painted silk and art paper stretched over
bamboo frames, these lanterns are a tribute to hiru andon, or
“daytime lamp,” something that seems to serve no purpose other
than to delight. Made with recycled and reimagined materials.

showcase their paintings, sculpture, and ceramics. The
award-winning Wilson High School poetry club hosts an
invitational poetry slam. Plus art lovers of all ages can take
part in an art project sponsored by the library.
