Calderdale Charities Aid Child Refugees
in Northern France

Two partner charities based in Brighouse, Focus4Hope
and the Town Hall Foundation, have visited child refugees
in camps in Northern France to provide urgent care and
medicine after a surge of support from the local community.
Focus4Hope are a community group who work predominantly
with the homeless, elderly and isolated in West Yorkshire. They
regularly host outreach in the centre of Leeds feeding the
homeless, as well as hosting events for the elderly. The Town
Hall Foundation is the non-profit run by private dental practice
Town Hall Dental, which seeks to provide oral health education
and emergency dental care for those who cannot afford it. Both
organisations regularly work together in Yorkshire, and previously
visited Calais in France in February.
Thanks to donations and fundraising from the local community,
including many local businesses (with special thanks to Sleigh
& Story and Lattitude 7 for their very kind donations), both
groups were able to visit camps across Northern France helping
refugees forced from their home countries. The refugee crisis in
France made headline news in 2016 when the‘Calais Jungle’was
dismantled by French authorities. Despite this, several thousand
refugees still live in the forests and camps around Northern France,
surviving on the support of charities and volunteers in the area.
While many refugees are from Syria, a number of those in the
area are fleeing war and persecution in other countries including
Afghanistan, Iran, Eritrea, Sudan and other African countries.
Both groups were assisted by refugee crisis charity Care4Calais,
working predominantly with women and their children, some as
young as five.
Louise Reed, Founder of Focus4Hope commented“Since our last trip
in February we’ve been overwhelmed by support and donations,
and a huge number of those donations have made their way down
to the people who need them most in the camps in France. We’ve
been able to provide clothing and essential supplies for children as
young as four or five years old, thanks to the tremendous generosity
of the people of Calderdale and West Yorkshire.”
Rachel Dilley, Head of the Town Hall Foundation, added“We know
that dental care is a high priority here in France, and some of these
children have already been living in the camps for several years. It’s
a dream come true to use our skills to help these people suffering
through what we can only imagine.”

with one pedal as you can in Nissan’s Leaf, the trio
of levels allows you to make the most of the e-Niro’s

What about the all-important range then? Well,
Kia claims that the e-Niro can manage 282 miles on
one charge. More impressively, the official figure is
higher when driving around town. That means many
e-Niro drivers will only need to charge up once a
week - at the most.
Granted, the topping up process isn’t as
straightforward as a quick fill up at the pumps, but
connect the Kia to a 100kW quick charger and less
than an hour later (54 minutes) you’ll have charged
the battery pack from next to nothing to 80 per
cent. That’s enough energy for the e-Niro to cover
between 226 and nearly 300 miles, depending on
how you drive it.
So, how much does this new all-electric car cost?
Well, at £32,995 (after the £3,500 Government
grant), the Kia e-Niro will only set you back around
£1000 or so more than the flagship Nissan Qashqai.
There are very few drawbacks with this e-Niro. Okay,
it can understeer a bit due to the weighty battery-
pack, but then this pack gives the Kia a low centre
of gravity. So, no, there really aren’t any significant
gripes from me.
At the end of the day, the all-new e-Niro is a no-
nonsense five-door family crossover that makes
electric car ownership more appealing than ever.

Blackbird

If you spot a true ‘black’
bird then it will be the male
of the species. The females
tend to be brown, often with
spots and streaks on their
breasts. They are one of the
most common UK birds with
a bright orange beak and
eye-ring.

They can be seen in gardens
all year round and have quite
a distinctive song, being one
of a small number of species
that sometimes sing during
the night. They maintain
tightly packed territories and
often use the same feeding
and breeding site.

Financial advice - feel like a gamble?
How we lFooink aafntecr iyaoulramdonveiyce –feel like a gamble?

Financial advice giant Openwork have
surveyed consumers and found that 43%

(June 2019). Is this because people really
don’t know how to access financial advice,
or is it because people don’t see the value

People are certainly finding it harder to save,
