All Change on Commercial Street
By Chris Helme

Looking back over the years many shops have come
and gone on Commercial Street. Some through the
owners retiring, whilst others may not have been as
successful as they would have liked and decided to
cut their losses.

Numerous plans and feasibility studies have
been produced over the years, all with the best

Having visited many towns over the last forty years
as a guest speaker, I have often heard members of
the group talking about how their own communities

Climb4CALAIS

In November the Town Hall Foundation, partnered with Focus4Hope, will be
making our third trip of 2019 to the refugee camps in Northern France. Thousands

of people, many of them women and children, are living in tents across the area
having been forced to flee persecution in countries like Sudan, Syria and Iraq.

On our last visit, we provided care and dental treatments for many of the children
there, but there is still so much more to do. Please help us to help the children in
need by raising as much money as possible at our Climb 4 Calais event. Thank you.

Richard’s Story

At the Town Hall Foundation, in partnership with Focus4Hope, we
work alongside a great number of people facing personal challenges,
from loneliness and isolation to homelessness and requiring urgent
medical care. One particular individual we have had the great
pleasure helping is our friend Richard, and this is his story.
Richard has been struggling with homelessness for the past twenty
years, from the age of 18, with the longest period of living rough on
the streets being over a year. Since he was 18, he estimates that he
slept on the streets for a total of six years. After leaving university,
Richard struggled with drink and drugs, leading to his struggles with
finding accommodation, living in a variety of shelters and hostels as
well as on the streets.
In November of 2018 we met Richard during our outreach sessions
in the centre of Leeds, where we provide handouts for those
sleeping on the streets as well as on site dental care. At this time
Richard had been sleeping rough for around two months and was
suffering from a painful abscess in his mouth that he was unable to
get treatment for. This abscess was bordering on the start of sepsis,
which is lethal on the streets. Anyone who meets Richard knows
that it is hard not to be charmed by his positive mental attitude and
we wanted to do everything we could to help.
The Town Hall Foundation paid for Richard’s treatment, and through constant contact and guidance by the
team at Focus4Hope Richard found a flat and a place to call his own. Our team also paid for all his furniture,
bedding and essentials he needed to get back on his feet.
We’re delighted to say that Richard now works with us at Focus4Hope and the foundation, and we could
not be happier to see him thriving. He is now fully trained in First Aid and going on education courses run
by our sister company Focus4Success. He’s stated that he wants to use his new position to give back and
help others like himself get off the streets.
Richard’s story is an inspiring one, and while we helped him along the way it wouldn’t have been possible
without all the hard work he did to better himself. We’re incredibly proud of him and can’t wait to see
where his future takes him. We want to be able to help more people like Richard, and that’s only possible
thanks to the amazing work of our community who regularly get involved in events such as clothing
donations and the Best of Brighouse Awards.

We’re delighted to announce that we will be hosting
the Christmas, Crackers, Curry and Comedy Night on
Thursday 19th of December at Brighouse Sports Club.
For each ticket sold £10 will provide a food parcel for
those in need in our community over the festive period.

Plant of the month Garden

Fuchsia

Fuchsia can be grown outdoors in moist, fertile
soil, and are ideally placed in flower borders
and beds. Once planted they can often live for
years with minimal care.
Pendent flowers are borne from summer to
autumn and trailing varieties are a useful
addition to hanging baskets although Fuchsias
prefer shade for the hottest part of the day and
need to be watered daily.
Best pruned in early or mid-Spring as new
growth appears. Standard Fuchsias should be
moved to a frost-free position during the winter
months to protect the main stem from frost
damage, regardless of hardiness.
