CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

TPC Kuala Lumpur’sVery SpecialWelcomeTo
Taiheiyo Of Japan

TPC Kuala Lumpur hosted the first visit of our reciprocal Club, Taiheiyo of Japan
on Sunday, 24 February when some 46 players played against 46 players on the
West Course.

Dato Mustafa Muhammad Ali I was not able to participate in the competition due to a bad “frozen” shoulder.
Club Captain However, I did welcome the visitors particularly the CEO, President Shun Han and
their Captain, Kiyoshi Furukawa when I escorted them to the VIP changing room on
the first floor of the West lobby. I also attended the prize giving ceremony afterwards.

The game went on very well in good weather with the TPC Kuala Lumpur players
beating the visitors by 20 ½ to 2 ½ games.

The President of Taiheiyo won the prize for the longest drive of 280 metres on the
18th hole and the ladies’ was won by Wako Furukawa, who could be the wife or
sister of the captain, Kiyoshi Furukawa with a drive of 180 metres. Well done Jovy
Ng who won nearest the line prize by placing her ball of the line itself.

The prize giving ceremony started at 1pm at the banquet hall. It was simply a
fantastic session with a live band and a Malaysian traditional dancing performance
by the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture. The beautiful clothes of the dancers
including the special “Tanjak” headgear of the men were very well received by the
visitors. The show went on for about 45 minutes and included 1 male dancer using
a blow pipe to burst a balloon on the top of a lady dancer’s hat from a distance of
about 15 feet!

There was also a very unexpected event in that management had organised a birthday
cake to celebrate my 82nd birthday on 22 February 2019. Everybody present sang
me a Happy Birthday song and although I was not originally due to speak, because
of the birthday treat, I decided to go on stage to thank the audience.

6

CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

Among other reminiscences, I told the audience that I spent some 3 months
attending a Japanese school about 75 years ago. I remember a lot of Japanese
expressions and use them now on this special occasion. I mentioned that we used
to have an assembly at 8am every Monday standing in attention facing the land
of the rising sun – Japan, to sing the Japanese National Anthem. I told them I still
remember the song, but I did not want to sing it otherwise everybody would have to
stand up at attention however, I did sing 2 verses of another Japanese song to the
tumultuous cheers of the crowd.
Before the prize giving,Tan Sri Ghani Othman, the Chairman of Sime Darby Plantation
gave a speech on behalf of TPC Kuala Lumpur. Tan Sri Ghani was the team leader
of TPC Kuala Lumpur team that went to Japan last October. There was a Japanese
interpreter who translated Tan Sri Ghani’s speech and similarly, when the President
of Taiheiyo spoke, there was also an English interpreter.
The prize giving ceremony went on very well with the Captain of Taiheiyo, Kiyoshi
Furukawa presenting the beautiful trophy to me on behalf of TPC Kuala Lumpur.
The prize giving ceremony ended at about 3pm and was certainly the best ever prize
giving ceremony held at TPC Kuala Lumpur.

CEO'S MESSAGE

“OnwardsAnd Upwards”

Steven Thielke With the first quarter of the year already behind us, it is time to take stock and
Chief Executive Officer ensure that TPC Kuala Lumpur is maintaining Management’s determination to
ensure that we grow our desire to improve our position as the leading premier Club
TPC Kuala Lumpur in the country to be that of the best in the region.

TPC Kuala Lumpur is not just a Golf Club but has world class facilities as a family
Club with sporting and culinary outlets amongst the best of their kind anywhere in
the region.

The Olympic size swimming pool and the adjacent training pool provide the
opportunity for serious competition or simply relaxing with the family, whilst
partaking of a specially crafted menu from the neighbouring Food and Beverage
outlets. Where else can Members and their offspring enjoy Tennis, Squash and
10-pin bowling alongside a Gymnasium and a Pro Shop that has a wide range of
sporting equipment.

All of these outlets have training programmes available to suit every age group, whilst
for those who enjoy the environment, the running group provides the opportunity on
alternate Sundays to take exercise in our beautifully landscaped surroundings.

For total relaxation, the Ayu Spa at the East lobby provides the perfect place to
unwind after a hard day’s work whilst the baby room and kid’s area give mums a
chance to spoil the children after the Ladies only golf session on the East Course.

Members will be aware thatTPC Kuala Lumpur has been a participant in the Audubon
Cooperative Sanctuary Programme for Golf Courses (ACSP) since 2017 and scored
our first certification a year later for “Environmental Planning”. Recently in March
2019, we’ve successfully obtained another 3 more certifications for “Chemical Use
Reduction and Safety, Wildlife and Habitat Management and Water Conservation.”
This is an international programme to help landowners preserve and enhance the
environmental quality of their property, consisting of six categories ranging from
wildlife and habitat management to water conservation and the reduction of usage
of chemicals.

CEO'S MESSAGE

In line with our continuing Eco-friendly policy, the Club observed Earth Hour on
Saturday, 30 March and have already ceased providing plastic straws, cups or
containers at the Golfer’s Terrace. We will soon be withdrawing more plastic items
as part of our endeavour to ensure a healthy environment for all.
TPC Kuala Lumpur continues to receive accolades for the excellent service provided
by our Banquet Operations, and Members are encouraged to use the various function
rooms available – especially the newly launched Gallery, whether for business or
family entertainment. Our location backed by free parking facilities as well as valet
and car wash services are a big advantage when compared to others in the City
Centre.
With the fasting month not far away, the first tier of Ramadan Vouchers has already
been sold out and we are delighted that so many Members are assisting in our
outreach programme where RM 1 from every purchase goes towards nearby welfare
homes. May I encourage you to “purchase now to avoid disappointment”. If you
prefer to hold a private Iftar event – we’ve got you covered too!
In this respect we appreciate comments and suggestions from Members regarding
our facilities and the service from our dedicated staff who also welcome feedback
which can be provided on the WOW card, which is available at the Business Centre
and Golfer’s Terrace. Completion of the card is a recognition of exceptional service
and acts as a motivation for our employees and allows for rewards and incentives for
the top WOW performers.

SNAPSHOTS | INTERCLUB MATCH (TPCKL VS TAIHEIYO)

Visit OfThe DistinguishedTaiheiyo Club From Japan -
23And 24 February 2019

Akey component part of Club Membership is not for financial gain from a timely investment, but to create
opportunities for interaction through friendships established on the Golf course whether at home or
abroad, many of which last for a lifetime.

Particular importance comes from the ability to travel and play with Members of reciprocal Clubs around the
world and especially those with whom TPC Kuala Lumpur has arranged annual interclub matches when the
special camaraderie and friendly competition are played in the true spirit of our wonderful game.

There is no better example than our annual interclub match with the distinguished Taiheiyo Club from Japan
when last month, following the first two events that we were their honoured guests in September 2016 and
October 2018, we had the opportunity to host 48 of their Members, which included their President Mr Shun
Han and Director Jiro Nonaka, and welcome them to TPC Kuala Lumpur for the third encounter.

The “Han Ghani Cup” is named after Mr Han-San, executive director of Taiheiyo and our very own Tan Sri
Ghani Othman who led our first team to visit them after the establishment of reciprocal ties in 2016. The
very special relationship between the Members of both Clubs is illustrated by the fact that there were over
100 golfers taking part in the event and it is especially pleasing that so many of our own Members were able
to reciprocate the unforgettable hospitality afforded to us when we were in Japan.

Our visitors played a practice round on the East Course on the Saturday followed the next day, by the
interclub match itself on the prestigious West Course, which was played in the established format of Four-
ball, Best-ball and on this occasion was narrowly won by the home team.

Although important, the victory itself was far outweighed by the friendship and fun that all participants
enjoyed, and we are especially grateful for the many compliments that were paid to the Club by our visitors
who also enjoyed the benefit of Malaysia Truly Asia’s hospitality and cultural show kindly arranged by Encik
Zulkifly Md Said, Deputy Director from the Ministry of Tourism.

In congratulating and thanking Encik Farroul, Ms Anita and Tengku Ahmad for their combined hard work in
putting this event together, may it be repeated with other similar ones in the months ahead as they clearly
illustrate the warmth and friendship that these interclub matches create and are an important and integral
part of “Clubbing”.

LANDSCAPING

Melaleuca Cajuputi (Gelam @ Kayu putih)

Written by
Mohd Zamri Mazelan,
Senior Horticulturist

This native tree is the source of a medicinal oil called cajuput oil. Some trees
are planted at Chek Jawa and according to Corners, it is common in Malaysia,
"especially in swampy ground near the coasts."
Features:
A tall tree (15-20m) with a narrow, dense crown and leaves (5-9cm long) that are
dull green, thick, leathery smooth, oval or elongated with 5-7 longitudinal veins. The
leaves that give off a typical 'tea-tree' smell when crushed resemble those of an
Acacia. The tiny flowers are creamy-yellow emerging on a long spike in the shape of
a bottle-brush whilst new leaves grow on the flower spike. Fruits are round brown
woody capsules in tight clusters and may remain on the tree for several years.
The trunk is often gnarled and twisted and the thick spongy bark is whitish to greyish
brown ('Kayu putih' which means 'white wood' in Malay) and may peel off in large
flakes like sheets of paper which is why it is sometimes also called the Paper bark
tree. It is a hardy tree that grows rapidly and can withstand poor waterlogged soils,
wind, heat and even fires, and it can also become an invasive weed when introduced
outside its native range. This tree can be seen at TPC Kuala Lumpur at Hole 5 West
Course.

30

LANDSCAPING

Human uses:
The leaves are used to distill 'Cajeputi' or 'tea-tree oil' which has medicinal and
antiseptic uses. In Myanmar they use it to treat gout, the Indochinese to treat
rheumatism and joint pains, the Malaysians to treat colic and cholera, the Indonesians
to treat burns, colic, cramps, skin diseases, wounds and various aches and pains.
The pinkish-brown timber has a uniform texture and is popular for use in carving,
cabinet work, boat building, and fencing as well as for fire wood. The bark flakes are
used for insulation and for stuffing pillows.
The timber is hard and durable and is used as the main firewood where bakau or
mangrove wood is unavailable. The papery bark is used to caulk boats as the bark
swells in water, thus sealing seams. The dried fruits are sold as a spice.
