CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

Very SuccessfulAnnual Club Championships

The Ladies and Men Seniors Club Championships took place over two
days on Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 November on the West Course.
In the past, the tournaments took place on the East Course but because it
had just been renovated, it was decided that this time they should be held
on the West Course.

Dato Mustafa Muhammad Ali Some 13 ladies and 47 men took part in the Championships. The best player
Club Captain for the ladies was Kelly Low Ka Yan (11) who scored GROSS 174 and the
NETT winner was Carole Farrand (18). However, a few days later I was
informed by Management, that Kelly did not qualify to play as she is only
14 years old and not a member of the Club yet. I must say that I thought
she looked very young at the Prize Giving Ceremony when I put the green
jacket on her.

The Club has now decided to award the GROSS prize to Cecilia Yap (15) who
had the second-best score of 182 but Management should have found out
about her ineligibility before the game and her parents should also not have
entered her name for the tournament.

The Seniors GROSS champion was Muralitharan Subramaniam (8) who
scored 158 and the NETT winner was Dato Abdullah Sani Karim (16) with a
score of 141.

CEO'S MESSAGE

It’sThatTime OfYear!

Steven Thielke It’s hard to believe that it is already December and in case we need reminding, the
Chief Executive Officer Seasonal decorations are already in evidence around the City and soon in TPC Kuala
Lumpur itself.
TPC Kuala Lumpur
It is also time to take stock, as we reflect on the events of the past twelve months
whilst making plans for the year ahead and although we can hold our heads up high
as we proudly look at the various accolades that YOUR Club has received during
2018 - especially at the Asian Golf Awards – we must always recognise that there are
areas where greater improvement can still be made.

It is particularly gratifying to receive the various WOW cards that Members have
returned and whether with good, or not so good comments, these are much
appreciated by Management as well as Staff who are always grateful to have their
efforts recognised.

The upgrading of the West Course must surely be our greatest golfing achievement
of the year, coinciding with the celebration of our second birthday shortly before the
CIMB Classic which sadly turned out to be the final occasion it was to be held at TPC
Kuala Lumpur as the PGA TOUR moves the event to be played in Japan next year as
part of their revised Asian Swing.

Every cloud has a silver lining and the exciting news is that we will now be able to
make full use of both the East and West Courses all the year round, for the benefit
of YOU - our Members. Already we have been receiving compliments not only about
the new playing experience but also about the improved environment and enhanced
landscaping. Congratulations are again due to the course designers and the untiring
efforts of En. Mohd Nizam Othman and his team.

The Club Championships were played in November and congratulations are due to
Muralitharan Subramaniam, Cecilia Yap and Sameer Raj Kukreja on their well-earned
victories, whilst a very successful Interclub match was played at the esteemed
Taiheiyo Club where our Members, led by Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Othman, were royally
treated by our benevolent hosts. We must ensure that we reciprocate in similar style
when they send their team to play a return match at TPC Kuala Lumpur next year.

TPC Kuala Lumpur InterclubVisit toTaiheiyo

Written by The reciprocal agreement between Taiheiyo Club and TPC Kuala Lumpur
Farroul Hossey, was officially signed in January 2016 and since then, our Members have
Club Manager been consistently utilising the golf courses and facilities at the Taiheiyo Clubs
in Japan.
24
20 to 28 October 2018 marked the second trip that TPC Kuala Lumpur has
organised for our Members, following the first occasion in September 2016.
This time a total of 26 Members signed up for the Interclub match and they
were accompanied by 2 TPC Kuala Lumpur colleagues, Mr. Farroul Hossey,
the Club Manager and the coordinator, Tengku Ahmad.

As with the previous Interclub match, the group was led byTan Sri Abdul Ghani
Othman and during the 8 days in Japan, we managed to cover 4 different Golf
Courses with 5 rounds of golf, starting with the Narita Course followed by the
Gotemba West Course, Asama Course and finally the Shirakaba Course.

SNAPSHOTS

Even though we’ve been to these Courses before, we still find the Gotemba
West Course very attractive due to its excellent condition and we were lucky
enough to witness beautiful Mount Fuji as our backdrop throughout the game.
The “Han Ghani Cup” is the official name of the Trophy and Amata Spring
Country Club from Thailand also joined the tournament this year which was
successfully held at the stunning Gotemba West Course
As usual, the four-ball best ball Ryder match format was adopted for the game
which turned out to be a tough challenge due to the unique Course setup and
green speed that they have at the Gotemba West Course with Ben Grass Wall
to Wall.
Unfortunately in the end, our TPC Kuala Lumpur team lost the game by 10 – 8
but we surely enjoyed the encounter as we were treated as VIPs throughout
the entire trip. Not to mention the elegant setup in the clubhouse during the
prize giving ceremony, with all the delicious local food and the entertainment
arranged by the Gotemba Members. Although, unlike the previous year, there
was no firework to end our night but each TPC Kuala Lumpur Member was
given a Club pin as a souvenir which none of us expected.
Besides Golf, our group got to spend the last 2 days in Tokyo, exploring the
city with all the good food and goodies and we hope that everyone enjoyed
the trip and thank you for your support by taking part in the Interclub match.
Let’s all look forward together to welcome a group from Taiheiyo for a return
match at our beautiful TPC Kuala Lumpur in February 2019.

LANDSCAPING

Lagerstroemia Langkawiensis

Written by Lagerstroemia langkawiensis or Bungor
Melissa Rahman, Langkawi is a species of small trees in
Project Management Executive the Lythraceae family. The genus is named
after the Swedish botanist Magnus von
Lagerstroem of Goteborg (1691-1759) and
is a rare endemic small tree scattered in
open lowland rainforests that can be found
in areas of quartzite, shale and limestone
on Pulau Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia.

Langerstroemia, or more commonly

Lagerstroemia langkawiensis tree known as Crepe myrtles are angiosperms
at hole 12, East Course, TPC KL. (flowering seed plants) that grow from small
to medium sized trees. While all species are

woody in nature, Langerstroemia langkawiensis can range in height from 10m

up to about 30m tall. The rest of its kind are small to medium multiple-trunked

trees and shrubs. Its foliage comprises simple leaves with entire margins,

shaped lanceolate to oblong, measuring from 6cm - 18cm long and 2.5cm

- 6cm wide. Its petioles range from 3mm - 5mm in length and are glabrous

on both surfaces. Whilst the leaves of this temperate species provide warm,

earthly colours. the flowers, however, are the total opposite.

Lagerstroemia langkawiensis Crepe myrtles are popularly known for their
leaf close up. colourful and long-lasting ornamental flowers
which brighten the landscape with densely
clustered blooms in various shades of umber,
crimson, pink, lavender and white. The species
is borne of crinkled flowers with crepe-like
textured petals, giving rise to the common
name “crepe myrtle”. Their delicate flowers are
hermaphrodite (having both male and female
organs) and are middle-sized up to 7.5 cm wide,
whilst each crinkly bloom is no more than 4cm
across but the flower clusters are 30cm in
length. The flowers drape the entire plant with
vibrant colours and are aesthetically pleasing
to the eye. There are also times when in

LANDSCAPING

extreme temperature conditions, Crepe
myrtles such as the Bangor Langkawi
will have other colours dominating the
green pigment, hence turning the leaves
yellowish, brownish or reddish.

The fruit of the Bungor Langkawi is a

capsule, green and succulent at first,

then ripening dry to dark brown or black

at maturity. It splits open along six or

seven lines, producing teeth much like

Lagerstroemia langkawiensis the calyx, and releases a numerous
crepe like flower petals amount of small, winged seeds. Most

species of Lagerstroemia have sinewy,

fluted stems and branches with a mottled appearance that arises from having

bark that sheds throughout the year. The Bungor Langkawi’s fruit and bark are

also harvested locally for their medicinal value. Lagerstroemia langkawiensis

grows best in well-drained soil, full sun and moderate water however, this

exotic plant is vulnerable in the wild and likely to be threatened by habitat loss.

Today, Crepe myrtle varieties can fill every

landscape need, from tidy street trees to

dense barrier hedges, urban landscaping and

even beautifying golf courses. Lagerstroemia

langkawiensis trees can be found on the East

Course of TPC Kuala Lumpur, at holes 2, 12 and

14. These ornamental trees not only contribute

to the aesthetic scenery and human need with

shade from their wide canopies, but they provide

a habitat for birds as well. Whether deciduous or

evergreen the mature trees turn into a shelter

Lagerstroemia for birds during the fruiting seasons. Our golf
langkawiensis tree bark course which is surrounded by Lagerstroemia

Langkawiensis does not only give the opportunity

for the bird community to continue to survive but it also helps to increase the

quality of the urban environment.

These rare Lagerstroemia Langkawiensis trees are definitely exquisite, paint
stunning sceneries and encourage better living for both mankind and wildlife.
We should all take time to appreciate what is left of this endangered species.
