Welcome to the
CIMB Classic

The CIMB Classic will take place at TPC Kuala Lumpur
from Thursday to Sunday, 11 to 14 October 2018 at the
newly renovated West Course and the Pro-Am will be
played on Wednesday, 10 October 2018 also on the West
Course.

Unlike previous years, at the time of writing, there has
not been much publicity but all the VIP Grand-Stands,
the Heineken platform and the Members’ marquee
are ready. I have also noticed a Grand-Stand has been
constructed overlooking the practice green.

There are many big names included in the field, including
last year’s winner Pat Perez and 4 past CIMB Classic
winners as well as Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Davis
Love III; current Ryder Cup player Paul Casey as well
as rising star Xander Schauffele, will play alongside
Malaysian hero Gavin Green.

Japanese Golfer, Hideki Matsuyama, has also confirmed
that will be coming to take part in the CIMB Classic and
his presence as usual will attract a lot of his countrymen
spectators who always follow him around the Course.

4

It is great to see the brilliant comeback of Tiger Woods when winning the Tour Championship in
front of an adoring crowd and one wonders if this is the return of the supremo if the early 2000s.
Now ranked 21 in the world Tiger came to Malaysia once and that was in 1999 when he came for
the World Cup Golf Championship which was played at The Mines Golf Course.
I have played at the West Course several times and I must say that the Greens are very good. All
of us must thank En. Mohd Nizam Othman, the Head of Agronomy and his team for having done
an excellent job.
I am very pleased to learn that one of our ambassadors, Gavin Green became the first Malaysian
to lift the Asian Order of Merit in 2017. He has been invited to play in the World Cup of Golf
at Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia from 22 to 25 November 2018. All the best
to Gavin who has picked Ben Leong as his partner and I hope that they will be able to fly the
Malaysian flag in Melbourne.
I also wish Gavin every success at the CIMB Classic.
Dato Mustafa Muhammad Ali
Club Captain

SUSTAINING SUCCESS -
NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY

Whilst it is very gratifying to receive the many accolades relating
to the upgraded West Course, we are looking forward to the final
stamp of approval from the professionals participating in the CIMB
Classic from Thursday to Sunday, 11 to 14 October, thereby
proving our ability to provide a course worthy of the true status
of TPC Kuala Lumpur. At the same time, it is most pleasing that
although being a challenge for the best in the world, it is also
enjoyed by our Club Members no matter what is their capability
during their daily outings. Let us not forget that whilst there is
nothing wrong with being competitive, of paramount importance
is that we must always have good camaraderie and above all, fun,
whilst playing this wonderful game.

Again, we congratulate and thank the design and Golf Course
maintenance teams for their foresight and ability to have
everything ready in time for the big day.

There are many big names included in the field this year including
last year’s winner Pat Perez, Justin Thomas and four past CIMB
Classic winners as well as Hall of Famers, Ernie Els and Davis
Love III. Current Ryder Cup players Paul Casey and Patrick Reed
in addition to rising star, Xander Schauffele will play alongside
Malaysian hero Gavin Green and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama will
undoubtedly have a huge following from the adoring Japanese
fans.

May I urge Members to collect their passes for this trademark
event from the Club’s Golf Registration Counter and should you
require additional tickets they can be bought online. As the only
PGA Tour event to be held in South East Asia this is indeed an
opportunity not to be missed.

It is also satisfying to note that our status as one of the top Clubs
in the world has been recognised by various external bodies
including the recent 12th Asian Club Managers Conference
in Singapore when I was invited to share our experience and
knowledge with our peers from other Clubs in the region. This is
again an indication of TPC Kuala Lumpur’s increasing status as a
global player.

6

At the same time, we must not be complacent nor lose sight of our continued drive for all round excellence
throughout your Club, be it on the Course itself or in the many other facilities that we are proud to possess.
It is vital that Management is always one step ahead and continues to provide the highest possible service
expected and deserving of the TPC family and their Members.

Of particular note is the recognition given to our Head of Agronomy, Mohd Nizam Othman, who was a prime
mover in the Environmental Planning of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programme which provides an
educational service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife policies as part
of their vision. By joining and participating in the ACSP, TPC Kuala Lumpur will be involved in projects that
enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community.

It is most pleasing that our persistence in emphasising that TPC Kula Lumpur is a family Club is clearly
illustrated by the fact that there was an increase in the usage of all our outlets during August with usage
of the Gym being the prime beneficiary closely followed by the Swimming Pool where there are lessons
available for Members and their families of all age groups whilst the Tennis Town Academy is popular and
provides lessons on Saturdays. The most active Running Group meets on alternate Sundays.

Following the recent launch, Speed Golf is proving to be hugely successful, every Tuesday, Thursday and
Sunday and augurs well for this time saving format of the game.

As frequently stated, we welcome comments and feedback from you, the Members, and we appreciate
your time for attending the 26th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 3 October. Let’s look forward to
the CIMB Classic during which the two Courses will be closed but with alternative arrangements having
been made with other Clubs; full details of which are available at the Golf Registration Counter.

Of general interest to all golfers is the new fully digitalised, online handicap mobile app MGA NHS, soon
to be launched by the MGA which will go live on 1 January 2019, at the same time that the issuance of
handicap cards will be discontinued. The new facility is part of the recent announcement by the R&A and
the USGA that they plan to launch the World Handicap System (WHS) by 2020.

Whilst every effort is made to update notices of all events and activities at the Club, Members can obtain
first-hand information from our WhatsApp by texting “YESTPCKL” to 0192636548 as well as on Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

Looking forward to meeting you at the AGM

indentations from old leaf bases. The trunks
are 30 to 45 cm in diameter, slightly bulging
at the base, and free of leaf bases in all but its
youngest parts. In their natural habitat they can
reach over 25 meters in height but usually get
no taller than 12 m when cultivated.

When mature, the nearly rounded leaves are
enormous, over 3 m wide, and are divided to a
third of their length into 20 or more stiff, once-
folded segments, which are split on the ends.
The leaves are in duplicate and costapalmate,
producing a wedge-shaped hastula where the
blade and petiole meet. Petioles are 2–3 m long,
slightly armed, and are covered in a white wax
as well as cinnamon-colored caducous scales
whilst the nearly-spherical leaf crown is 7.5 m
wide and 6 m tall. Most cultivated Bismarckias
feature silver-blue foliage although a green
leaf variety exists (which is less hardy to cold
conditions). These palms are dioecious and
produce pendent, interfoliar inflorescences of
small brown flowers which, in female plants,
mature to a brown ovoid drupe, each containing
a single seed.

Bismarck palms are easy to grow in the right
environment as they are adaptable to a wide
range of soils and prefer to have good drainage
as they do not like to have root rot. The Bismarck
palm can adapt to either acidic or alkaline soil
and prefers to be watered directly into the root

MGA NATIONAL HANDICAPPING SYSTEM
(NHS) MOBILE APP

In line with the World Handicap System (WHS) launching in January
2020, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has introduced a mobile

existing USGA Handicapping System to WHS. Golfers are advised to
install the free MGA NHS mobile app from Apple AppStore or Google
