Township of Mount Olive
Health Department

Take Care of Your Heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent
heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, the Mount Olive Health
Department is proudly participating in American Heart Month. In Morris
County, 5.6% of adults have been diagnosed with heart disease, with men at a
higher risk. 3.3% of adults in Morris County have had a heart attack in their
lifetime.

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease.
Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already

have heart disease. To lower your risk:
• Watch your weight.
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand
smoke.
• Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.

…by creating healthy habits and taking advantage of the warmer weather:
 Get outside! The winter keeps you inside, less likely to be exposed to healthy
amounts of UV light, decreasing vitamin D levels. A few minutes outside a day
can increase vitamin D and decrease stress levels.
 Eat Seasonably. A healthy diet consists of fresh produce, rich in vital vitamins
and minerals. Some produce that are in season for spring are: apples,
avocados, broccoli, peas, spinach, strawberries and carrots.
