Case study: Elephant &
Castle, London

London’s ambitious Elephant & Castle
regeneration project aims to create a model for
large-scale urban sustainable communities.
The master plan includes 2,500 zero emission
sustainably designed and built homes and
businesses, increased biodiversity across the
25 acre site.

At its heart lies the innovative Elephant &
Castle Combined Heat and Power (CHP) energy
centre, designed and managed by a collaborative
team including E.ON’s energy experts. The
centre generates highly efficient energy and
connects with local heat networks. It provides
heat and power to 1,000 neighbouring homes,
each equipped with smart meters. It’s already
cut annual energy costs by 30%, with even
bigger achievements in the pipeline.

Case study: CHP at
Blackburn Meadows,
Sheffield

We’re proud to be UK market leaders in CHP,
operating and managing plants 24/7, 365 days
a year for our clients. Our Blackburn Meadows
biomass CHP plant uses 200,000 tonnes
of local, recycled waste wood which would
otherwise go to landfills, to power 40,000
Sheffield homes and providing 30 jobs.

The district heat network provides heat
as hot water to local businesses including
Sheffield Forgemasters, Sheffield Arena and
Ice Sheffield. It’s one of nine E.ON CHP plants
nationwide and part of our investment in this
efficient energy source.

In 2017 we added one of the first commercial
battery systems installed in the UK, an
innovative 10MW scheme. The battery
system will respond to frequency fluctuations
within one second, absorbing or discharging
power into the local distribution network,
ensuring that the power supply and quality
is maintained.

CHP can reduce CO2 emissions by up
to 30% – and it’s incredibly reliable. We’re
also using CHP to cut waste and reduce
costs for hospitals as well as energy-intense
industrial brands like Tata Chemicals.
