We are delighted to welcome our new Depute Head
Teachers, Miss Farrell and Mrs Collins to Elderbank. They
are both looking forward to working with you and your
children.
Miss Robertson has overall responsibility for the whole
school, but the Senior Management Team contacts for each
year group or provision in the first instance are:
Early Years – Mrs Collins
Primary 1 – 3 – Mrs Collins
P4-7 – Mrs Macfarlane/Miss Auld
Supported Learning – Miss Farrell
Enhanced Deaf Provision – Miss Robertson

We have had a rise in children purchasing and consuming
energy drinks on the way to school. We have also had some
inappropriate behaviour to deal with following the
consumption of these drinks.
As you know these drinks are not suitable for children
under the age of 16 as per the warning labels. We will not
allow pupils to drink these energy drinks in school.
We request that you discuss the significant dangers with
your child and reinforce the school rules. I know you as

parents and carers will share our significant concerns in
relation to your child’s health.

As per the school policy, if your child requires to
bring a mobile phone to school as they may
require it for safety on a journey home, then it
must be switched off on your child’s entry to
school and for safe keeping given to the class teacher who
will lock it away.

Unfortunately, we have had some pupils not following the
protocol and have compromised the safety of others by
using them inappropriately during the school day.

Please reinforce the school policy with your child and we will
review the same at school.

Elderbank is supported by the Parent Council
which relies on parents and carers volunteering to
meet and discuss the work of the school. The
next Parent Council Meeting is on Tuesday 14th
January at 7p.m. As part of the Parent Council Meeting
there will be a decision made on Primary 7 Leavers’ Hoodies,
following the recent parent consultation. We have three
quotes and will be asking each supplier to provide a sample
to be reviewed at the meeting.

It is important that if your child should pay for
school meals that you ensure your child’s account is in
credit. If you need any assistance the office staff will
provide additional information. If you meet the criteria for
Free School Meals please ensure you make the necessary
application.

We are pleased to see that most of our children are coming
to school in their uniform. Can we politely remind everyone
that our colours are white polo shirt or shirt, royal blue
sweatshirt or cardigan and black trousers or skirt. Black
tops are NOT part of our uniform. We also appreciate
children wearing plain black shoes or black trainers.

As part of our commitment to our Scottish heritage we will
have a Scot’s Language focus in January. I am sure you will
enjoy supporting your child as they learn poems for the
Scot’s Verse Speaking competition which is taking place on
the 23rd/24th January.

Following the school holiday some parents have reported
their children have had head lice. As we regularly share,

head lice are not just contained to spreading at school. It
is very important that if your child has head lice that you
follow the full treatment programme to ensure all head lice
are removed. This also involves washing all towels and
bedding.

Our school values are Respect, Inclusion, Equality and
Excellence and it is essential that all staff and pupils
embrace these. Therefore, we respectfully request that
you review these school values with your child, as we do in
school. We will not tolerate any negative behaviours and in
particular any acts of violence or aggression or use of
inappropriate language.

If your contact number changes please come
into school and complete the required change
of details form. We require this form to be
completed and signed as we are making changes on our
electronic information system.
We need to be able to contact you or a nominated person at
all times while your child is at school. This is crucial,
especially if there is an accident or your child takes unwell.

As part of Miss Farrell’s remit as Health and
Safety Officer at Elderbank she will be
contacting parents to review any medication

kept in school and to review care plans. I hope this early
notice is helpful and the process will ensure we are
continuing to meet the needs of all our pupils.
If your child has an inhaler or medication in school, please
ensure that it is in date and replaced before it expires.

As part of our continued commitment to learning outdoors,
please ensure your child has suitable footwear and clothing
for learning outdoors in all weathers.

We will be combining all we have been learning
about numeracy in our Financial Education
Week in February. Mr Caldwell and the pupils
will provide more information nearer the time.

Primary 7 visits to Greenwood were
planned for the end of January. Due to
unforeseen circumstances at Greenwood the dates are
being rearranged. As soon as we have confirmed details we
will let everyone know.

During the November Parent Teacher
Meetings we asked parents and carers to
participate in a survey regarding Leavers’
Hoodies. The majority of parents requested
that these are available in Term 3. We have now sourced
three competitive quotes and the final supplier and
information will be determined after the Parent Council
Meeting.

We will be starting the transition process for children
moving into Primary 1 in February. We have a very well
planned and comprehensive programme which ensures all
children make a smooth transition into Primary 1 in August
2020.

During this term, we will be sending home some simple
questions we would like you to discuss and respond to with
your child(ren). This will allow us to gather your views and
be able to plan for next session to ensure we are meeting
the needs of every learner.
