CORDLESS

Our modern way of living and inhabiting spaces demands options and flexibility. Portable, rechargeable, cordless lights
offer just that, allowing you to layer lighting to create a mood or suit a task, without having to commit to chasing cables
(especially in rented properties). And your light can follow you around the house and even outdoors. Not only are these

lamps LED, and therefore efficient, they’re seriously raising the design stakes with the likes of Alberto Basaglia and
Natalia Rota Nodari’s Giravolta for Pedrali (below) and the Profumo d’Estate by Davide and Michele Groppi

Deputy editor of VISI magazine Annemarie Meintjes recently visited two of the most important consumer
trade fairs in Europe – Maison & Objet in Paris and Ambiente in Frankfurt – which exhibit the latest designs
and trends in homeware, tableware, indoor and outdoor lifestyle, accessories and gifting ideas.

“The lighting of the stands at both fairs was brilliantly executed,”says Annemarie,“featuring either slick designer
tracking systems with adjustable spots directed onto the merchandise, or cleverly concealed light sources as part of

the stand’s design.”Here are some of her picks for lighting design trends to watch.

certain tasks and meet those requirements.
iGuzzini tends to specialise in outdoor
lighting, but they are also very strong on
the decorative side in terms of the colours
they do. And from an appearance point
of view, iGuzzini is a very nice, modern
looking product.”

BEFORE THE ZEITZ MOCAA WAS
officially opened, the lighting in the atrium
was set on the cooler end of the scale – closer
to the 4 000K of the galleries themselves. But
these were gradually warmed as curator Mark
Coetzee and architect Thomas Heatherwick
sought to imbue the industrial space and
its textures with a more intimate and
welcoming feel.

But there was a deliberate principle to keep
the fittings and spotlights as unobtrusive and
camouflaged as possible. As the saying goes,
good design is invisible, and at no point is
your gaze attracted by the discreetly placed
iGuzzini lighting. Instead, the magnificent
atrium is the work of art – a truly successful
application of accent lighting.

“Little things like the lights set along
the spiral staircases were major decisions,”
says Jurgen. “Where they are normally a
simple light, they had to meet architectural
requirements, to get a particular
industrial feel.”

The Zeitz MOCAA is available to rent as
a venue for private functions, so each light is
dimmable to create separate pockets of space
that can fit any crowd size, from the entire
space at night to more intimate usage during
the day. The automated lighting system can

.also be configured for maximum versatility.
The Zeitz MOCAA is a national treasure,
and its atrium is a global architectural wonder,
accentuated and enhanced with the potential
of intelligent accent lighting.

Coetzee, wanted to make sure that the light
fittings did not detract from the building itself,
so they are all discreetly placed, but perfectly
positioned for maximum effect.

Previous pages: The lighting in the atrium
needs to work in tandem with the external
light from the glass ceiling and doors to
maintain a consistent effect. An automated
system using sensors ensures it stays at a
certain level no matter what the time of day
or weather.

are ideal for reception areas and offices. Spazio’s
sleek aluminium Duplo, T-Uni, Visual and Long
Drink lighting systems do double duty as both
task and decorative lighting solutions.

THE ATMOSPHERE can determine how
long customers choose to stay. “Atmosphere
is critical within any retail space and the
introduction of varying colour temperatures
influences the customer’s overall experience,”
says Scott. Warm, neutral or cool light has a
major influence. In the main sales showroom,
higher colour temperatures of 4 000K offer a
clear, white light that makes for an upbeat and
professional ambience that promotes sales.
Reception and sales offices should provide
a warmer colour temperature, advises Scott,
of around 3 000K, allowing customers to
feel welcome and relaxed. Control systems,
including dimmers, make for easy ambience
adjustments and aid with energy saving.
Tunable white LEDs, such as the Tunable White
LED panel from Spazio, allow for the mimicry
of natural light, making the transition from
showroom floor to test drive easy on the eye.
