Nostalgic Look Back Sterling Bicycle Factory – October, 1896 - engine room

FOR ADVERTISING RATES CALL 262-564-8800 Sterling Bicycle factory was built in 1895 on six acres of
land in the Bain Subdivision; designed by Charles Dickhaut,
Sterling promoted itself as having the only single-story
bicycle factory in the world. In 1896, the factory produced
15,000 bicycles to such a high quality they were advertised
as being "built like a watch." This image shows the engine
room, which housed stationary steam engines of a similar

type to those manufactured in Sturtevant in Racine
County. In 1899 the American Cycle Company acquired
the Sterling Bicycle Company, and sold the factory to
Thomas and Charles Jeffery in 1900. Kenoshans believed
bicycle production would continue, but the father-son
team was about to introduce Kenosha to the automobile.
