Discover an incomparable world of opulence and fine
dining in Derby’s oldest and newest restaurant.
Derby’s best loved Indian restaurant, established for
over 30 years on Midland Road, has moved but a few
doors away, but what a transformation!

To enter the new Shalimar Gold restaurant is a revelation. You will find a sumptuous
interior, impeccable service, fabulous food, and the warmest welcome in Derby. Discover
intriguing artworks, and even poetry themed on the ‘Romance of Shalimar’ amidst
luxurious bespoke furniture and soft lighting, set out in a subtle arrangement of
intimate spaces.

Owner and restaurateur Mahmood Akhtar and his son Shaz have spared no expense to
creating Derby’s ultimate Indian dining experience, and together with award winning
designer Richard Swain, they have certainly achieved this. Richard, who trained under
H M the Queen’s architect and interior designer, Sir Hugh Casson, was a London based
consultant for many years, and has brought to Shalimar Gold the style and excellence of
the capital.

The same standards of excellence have been extended into every detail of the operation
and management of the restaurant, from every aspect of culinary preparation to
providing ‘the Smartest Service in town’.

The former Shalimar restaurant had long had a loyal following from customers who
recognised very good food and a warm feel. Shalimar Gold has taken the ‘very good food’
and positive ambience to new heights, and places these qualities in the setting they
deserve.

As a Shalimar customer, we look forward to seeing you enjoy our famed food and
hospitality at Shalimar Gold.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT FIRE

Which fire is best for you?

When considering ways to remodel a room or home, an indoor fireplace can add so much. Above merely
heating up a room, fireplaces change the feel of a space, making it more romantic and cosy.
There are several different types of indoor fireplaces you can purchase, but they basically fall into the
broad categories of wood burning stoves, gas fires or electric fires. Here’s some things to consider when
choosing your perfect fire.

Wood Burning Stoves

A Traditional wood burning stove is what most people think of
when they picture a fireplace in their head. There’s nothing quite as
romantic as the snapping and crackling of a roaring fire. These days
however, there are a number of options for you in this category, and
they can differ in terms of how much heat they give off and how cost
effective they will be for you to operate.

Gas Fires

Although they may not offer the same feel as wood burning versions,
fireplaces that use gas, burn cleanly and give your room instant heat.
They generally also require less construction or reconstruction to
install, making them an attractive alternative to traditional wood
burning indoor fires. With no wood storage or handling to worry
about and fully controllable instant heat, a gas fire is a popular
choice.

Electric Fires

Electric fires are the most cost effective option out of all the types of
fireplaces on the market. As an added bonus, electric fireplaces are
relatively esay to install and even be free standing.

Easy to turn on and off as you need it, electric fires can still maintain
a fireplace ambience and can offer the flame effect even without heat.
Most electric fireplaces include a remote controlled heater and some
even have different varieties of fire effects, which allow total user
customisation.

I’m Savvy Magazine 8 In Derby - Issue 2

So lots to think about when you’re choosing your
perfect fire…

• Cost of installation vs. improvement to your
home and property value.

• Running costs of the different fuels, when utility
bills can fluctuate.

• The lifestyle look and feel vs. practical cleaning
and maintenance.

• The size of your room and the physical
installation constraints & opportunities you
have.

A SAVVY OPTION!

With more and more demand for
consumer choice, is vegan and
vegetarian food becoming more
popular, is the good old meat burger
being challenged as a tasty option?

I’m Savvy Magazine 16 In Derby - Issue 2

Vegans and vegetarians often get the short end of the
stick when it comes to burgers, but, the veggie burger,
once a crime against good eating, has come of age.
It’s no longer just mushed-up grains and beans but is
being given serious attention by top places to eat out.
Modern day chefs are trying to make a non-meat burger
a tasty dish in its own right, not just a second rate
option for vegetarians, you will find more and more
restaurants, cafes and bars adding the option to their
new menus in 2017.

If you are looking for a healthier option of burger then a
veggie burger is a popular choice for anyone.
Switching to a Veggie burger from a meat burger has
its benefits, they contain less calories and tend to be
lower in fat, plus you will find veggie burgers contain
high amounts of fibre which in turn is beneficial to your
heart.
Next time you fancy a burger, consider visiting a local
place to eat rather than a fast food restaurant, there
are lots around Derby. You may be surprised!
